IN JUNE 1850, twenty-five physicians met in Burlington, Iowa, to establish the Iowa Medical and Chirurgical Society. John Sanford, the organizing force behind the new society, had attended the third annual meeting of the American Medical Association in 1849 and had been inspired by the call for physicians to organize state, district, and county associations. Physicians needed to band together not only to improve medical knowledge and practice by giving papers and discussing their experiences among their peers, but also to promote their professional interests through political and social action. When I was asked to write a review of Djerassi’s recent book, This Man’s Pill, I had no idea what to expect. As a historian of birth control, I of course knew his name and his role in the development of oral contraceptives, but beyond that I knew little else. And so when his book arrived, I was surprised and also in many ways pleased, for this is not your usual academic publication but something quite different. Giangiacomo Feltrinelli war Kronprinz eines Mailänder Verleger-Imperiums mit Welterfolgen wie "Doktor Schiwago, "Der Leopard" und "Das bolivianische Tagebuch, das er in den Dienst der italienischen und internationalen Linken stellte. Im März 1972 kommt der Revolutionär, vermutlich beim Versuch einen Strommasten zu sprengen, ums Leben. Aufs Bombenlegen haben ihn wohl die Südtiroler gebracht.

Seine Bindungen zu Südtirol sind zwar oberflächlich bekannt, nähere Details dazu liefert die eben erschienene Biografie, verfasst von seinem Sohn Carlo. Auch ein neu entdecktes Flugblatt Feltrinellis zu Südtirol aus dem Jahre 1964 liefert interessante Neuigkeiten.
