Still We Remain: Living Religious Liberty Consciously And Unconsciously, Shawnee Daniels-Sykes S.S.N.D. Dec 2012

Still We Remain: Living Religious Liberty Consciously And Unconsciously, Shawnee Daniels-Sykes S.S.N.D.

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Here, Dr. Daniels‐Sykes explores the principle of religious liberty, which has become one of the focal points in the current health care debate. She considers how one should ‘live’ religious liberty from the perspective those parishioners who live on the margins – those whose parishes have been closed, and the victims of individual and institutional racism.

The Satanic Nature Of Racist “Christianity”, Susan Peppers-Bates Dec 2012

The Satanic Nature Of Racist “Christianity”, Susan Peppers-Bates

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this paper, Dr. Peppers‐Bates ponders the persistence of individual and institutional racism among modern‐day Christians by applying the anthropological‐psychological lens of the scholar René Girard and his concepts of mimesis and the scapegoating mechanism. The message of the Gospel is incompatible with violence and hatred, yet those who embrace racial stereotyping, even as they call themselves ‘Christians’, are deaf to it.

Building Interreligious Encounter/Dialogue Through Friendship In A Pluralistic World: The Nigerian Context, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai Dec 2012

Building Interreligious Encounter/Dialogue Through Friendship In A Pluralistic World: The Nigerian Context, Simonmary A. Aihiokhai

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this essay, Dr. Aihiokhai explores the philosophical concept of friendship as a model for fostering interreligious dialog across the Christian, Muslim, and the Ihiebve Traditional religions in Nigeria, based on qualitative research conducted between 2011 and 2012, and also on first‐hand experiences. By using alterity as grounds for communication and by worshiping openly and collaboratively, we can begin to appreciate not only the ‘other’, but also ourselves.

Introducing James Cone’S The Cross And The Lynching Tree, Jon Nilson Dec 2012

Introducing James Cone’S The Cross And The Lynching Tree, Jon Nilson

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Based on a talk delivered during the 2011 Annual Meeting, Dr. Nilson engages James Cones’ recent book, The Cross and the Lynching Tree, which Cone describes as the culmination of his life’s work. Nilson critiques this important contribution to black theological scholarship in an essay that is part review, part response to Cone’s invitations to dialogue with white theologians.

Well-Worn, Meredith Doench Nov 2012

Well-Worn, Meredith Doench

English Faculty Publications

Technically it's not a bookshelf, but a collection of paperbacks stacked beside my nightstand. Most second-hand booksellers would term the current state of these paperbacks as well-worn. Multiple pages of these works are dog-eared, while the margins are filled with my scribbled thoughts and connections. The covers are permanently bent, torn, and haphazardly mended after so many harried shoves inside my cluttered book-bag. When I think of this book collection, I’m reminded of how my favorite music looked before the invention of the Ipod. My beloved tapes and CDs had been played so much, most of the printed material …

Nourishing Difference For The Erotic Couple, Danielle Poe Oct 2012

Nourishing Difference For The Erotic Couple, Danielle Poe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Erotic relationships have often been excluded from accounts of social transformation, but they can challenge us to work together and return to ourselves. In Irigaray’s work, “the two” create new paths to reach each other and return to themselves as individuals; in so doing, they create new possibilities for others.

Hi, Magic Closet, Tell Me What To Wear!, Si Liu, Tam Nguyen, Jiashi Feng, Meng Wang, Shuicheng Yan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this demo, we present a practical system, "magic closet," for automatic occasion-oriented clothing pairing. Given a user-input occasion, e.g., wedding or shopping, the magic closet intelligently and automatically pairs the user-specified reference clothing (upper body or lower body) with the most suitable one from online shops. Two key criteria are explicitly considered for the magic closet system. One criterion is to dress properly, e.g., compared to suit pants, it is more decent to wear a cocktail dress for a banquet occasion. The other criterion is to dress aesthetically, e.g., a red T-shirt matches better with white pants than with …

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel M. B. Collopy, Connie L. Bowman, David A. Taylor Sep 2012

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel M. B. Collopy, Connie L. Bowman, David A. Taylor

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

The educational achievement gap is a critical social justice issue. Catholic and Marianist conceptions of social justice in particular call people to work with others in their spheres of life to transform institutions in order to further human rights while promoting the common good. Drawing on key elements of Catholic teaching on social justice, we argue that the achievement gap constitutes a social injustice. We then offer a case illustrating collaboration between university-based teacher educators and school faculty to address the achievement gap through transforming the institutions of school and of teacher preparation. The Dayton Early College Academy (DECA), founded …

Essay Writing Instructional Lexicon And Semantic Confusion, Amir Kalan Aug 2012

Essay Writing Instructional Lexicon And Semantic Confusion, Amir Kalan

English Faculty Publications

“Introduction,” “body,” and “conclusion” are the most accessible words in the instructional lexicon for ESL writing teachers when they want to describe the structure of a typical five-paragraph persuasive or argumentative essay or its shorter variations for standardized tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. They are frequently employed to refer to the three tiers of the hamburger essay in textbooks, on classroom boards, and in YouTube tutorials.

Not surprisingly, English learners also might give you the same words if asked what the main components of an essay are. Like ESL teachers, students usually use the same terms or their equivalents …
