Most past research on the democratization of Hong Kong has been generally concerned about on the ramifications of institutional power dynamics, and aimed to inform an audience whose primary interests were in China. Accordingly, understandings of the culture and society of Hong Kong becomes limited, as they serve to support an argument for or against Chinese regional despotism. From public media coverage to scholarship articles, very little attention has been paid to the transformations of Hong Kong at the individual level. Centuries after his own lifetime, William Shakespeare dominates the Western canon and continues to have a profound effect on Western society. As the values of that society shift and social movements progress, so too must critical reception of Shakespeare's work. The purpose of this thesis is to reexamine Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida (1601), Othello (1604), and Antony and Cleopatra (1606) through a feminist lens in order to expose the larger societal issues addressed within the play. This thesis explores the decomposition of the patriarchal family model in three plays written by Mexican dramatist Jesús González Dávila. Focusing on Pastel de zarzamora, El jardín de las delicias and De la calle, the present study analyzes the roles of the adult and the youth characters. González Dávila portrays oppressive, authoritative fathers who are power hungry and need to have control over all family matters. These domineering fathers are the roots of all the problems exhibited by the youth protagonists in all three of these plays. The Travellers, a nomadic group of people indigenous to Ireland, have long been marginalized in Irish society as a result of discrimination. The Travellers themselves have had a history of working to keep themselves separate from the settled Irish, essentially maintaining their own ethnic identity. Traveller culture has undergone a number of changes since the 1960s, a period of increasing urbanization and economic transformation in Ireland. In 1943 the image of Rosie the Riveter personified what the ideal American woman was supposed to be. Rosie supported the war effort and did her patriotic duty for her country, earned a high wage, enjoyed her newfound independence, and showed America that she could do a man’s job, and do it well. Spain has a long history of discrimination, social and legal, against homosexuals which began to change with the end of Franco’s dictatorship in 1975. Spanish society became more and more accepting of homosexuals, and the laws that changed between 1975 and the present day reflect this change. Although Spanish society is relatively accepting of homosexuals, they have not been portrayed to a proportionate extent or with the same accepting attitudes in film. In particular, there is an overwhelming underrepresentation of lesbian movies, especially those that portray them in a positive light. This trend began to change in the 1990s, around …
