A Theology Of Confirmation From The Canon Of Scripture, Peter Pellicaan Jan 2021

A Theology Of Confirmation From The Canon Of Scripture, Peter Pellicaan

Theses

In the last forty years, scholars have commonly referred to confirmation as the “sacrament in search of a theology.” While various works have offered a theology of confirmation in recent years, they have not employed an explicitly biblical method. In contrast, the early Church Fathers and ecclesiastical writers engaged an biblical method by employing a typological interpretation of scripture in order to understand baptism and the eucharist. In this sense, circumcision, the crossing of the Red Sea and the waters referred to in the creation narrative have been understood as prefiguring baptism; the Passover inaugurated by Moses in Egypt is …

Panpsychism And The First-Person Perspective: The Case For Panpsychist Idealism, Brentyn Ramm Jan 2021

Panpsychism And The First-Person Perspective: The Case For Panpsychist Idealism, Brentyn Ramm

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

In this paper I argue for a version of panpsychist idealism on first-person experiential grounds. As things always appear in my field of consciousness, there is prima facie } empirical support for idealism. Furthermore, by assuming that all things correspond to a conscious perspective or perspectives (i.e., panpsychism), realism about the world is safeguarded without the need to appeal to God (as per Berkeley's idealism). Panpsychist idealism also has a phenomenological advantage over traditional panpsychist views as it does not commit perceptual experience to massive error by denying that perceived colors are properties of things. Finally, I argue that the …

The Affectivity Of Good Teaching: Towards The Transformative Practice Of Possessing A 'Thinking Heart', Glenn Morrison Jan 2020

The Affectivity Of Good Teaching: Towards The Transformative Practice Of Possessing A 'Thinking Heart', Glenn Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The aim of the article is to develop a phenomenological and theological approach to the affectivity of good teaching to foster a transformative practice of student engagement and awareness of the life of the soul as much as the mind and the heart. Drawing on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition’s search for truth in the context of the theological virtues of faith, hope and love, the article sets out to articulate what it means to possess a thinking heart of education by way of engaging seven transcendental imperatives: be spontaneous, be imaginative, be hopeful, be faithful, be pastoral, be not afraid, …

Theological Foundations Of Pastoral Care In Catholic Universities, Thomas V. Gourlay Aug 2017

Theological Foundations Of Pastoral Care In Catholic Universities, Thomas V. Gourlay

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

One defining element of life in any Catholic educational institution, whether it be primary, secondary, or tertiary, is the focus on pastoral care for staff and students. This paper provides a distinctly Catholic definition of the term ‘pastoral care’ and briefly examines the theological foundations that underpin this concept, particularly, in relation to its application in the Catholic university. The paper traces the motif of pastoral care through the Scriptures and, building on insights from St. Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities, Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990) and the broader theological anthropology of the Vatican II Council. The …

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg Jan 2017

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Violence in relationships is a common experience for a significant number of women. VicHealth (Australia) has noted that one of the underlying and contributing factors towards violence against women is their environment, citing ‘faith-based institutions’ such as churches as one such environment for many women. Indeed, international research shows that the language of religion is often used by women to explain abuse. Additionally, abused Christian women are more likely to remain in or return to unsafe relationships, citing religious beliefs to support avoidance of ‘family break-ups’ despite abuse. In contrast, however, churches can address domestic violence within a context of …

Cultural Decoding: A Humanities Program For Gifted And Talented High School Students Seeking University Entrance, Laura D'Olimpio, Angela Mccarthy, Annette Pedersen

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

This article details Cultural DeCoding, a humanities based high school extension program for gifted and talented Year 11 and 12 students in Western Australia. The brainchild of Dr Annette Pedersen (UWA & John XXIII College) and Dr Angela McCarthy (UNDA), the program runs for four days across the summer holidays before the start of the school term. The program fills a gap that exists in the education of gifted and talented secondary students who are interested in the humanities. It is comprised of sessions run by academics who facilitate discussion and activities based on their area of research and teaching …

The Real Presence Of Christ In The Eucharist, Samuel French Sep 2015

The Real Presence Of Christ In The Eucharist, Samuel French

Aristos

The dogmatic constitution Lumen Gentium describes the Eucharist as “the source and summit of the Christian life.” It is not hard to imagine then, that this subject of principal importance is still being debated two millennia after its institution. Even when it was taught from the lips of Jesus himself, there were many disciples who grumbled saying: “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” (Jn 6:60) Unfortunately, this is still the case today. There are some among the faithful who no longer believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and others who simply misunderstand …

Book Review: Emmanuel Levinas (Seán Hand), Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2012

Book Review: Emmanuel Levinas (Seán Hand), Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

How can people ever respond to the horror of genocide? For those who have experienced it first hand and lived, the trauma is incalculable. There have been some who can openly respond in narrative. Readers may certainly be familiar with Elie Wiesel’s Night and Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, or even Zvi Kolitz’s poignant literary work, Yosl Rakover Talks to God. These are compelling stories that evidence how the Shoah bears an infinite amount of meaning. In contrast, the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas portrays a different kind of response to the Shoah as an attempt to draw …

Integration Of Visual Art For Small Worshipping Communities, Angela M. Mccarthy Jan 2011

Integration Of Visual Art For Small Worshipping Communities, Angela M. Mccarthy

Theology Conference Papers

A difficulty for small worshipping communities is having the resources and personnel to provide suitable enervating opportunities for reflection on the Word during worship that enriches and enlivens their community action. Research has shown that interaction with visual imagery assists contemplation and integration of text and will therefore assist those gathered to consider the Scripture of the day.

Visual imagery in art has been neglected as a source of theology and hence the vocabulary needed to ‘read’ the artworks relevant to Scripture will have to be re-learnt. This paper will provide an understanding of how visual arts can augment Scriptural …

Children Of A Lesser God: Truth As Bodiliness And Forgiveness, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2011

Children Of A Lesser God: Truth As Bodiliness And Forgiveness, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article aims in two parts to develop a sense of truth as bodiliness and forgiveness. In bodiliness, we suffer by the suffering of the other and in forgiveness there arises an existential journey of sensibility and feelings. Together, bodiliness and forgiveness provide a relational horizon to journey towards truth. Part I of the article sets out to establish a theoretical background for Part II to engage theology with the study of the film, Children of a Lesser God (1986). Given that films today are popular mediums for encountering revelation and the sacred, the application of film to theology provides …

Book Review: Into The Dark: Seeing The Sacred In The Top Films Of The 21st Century. By Craig Detweiler., Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2011

Book Review: Into The Dark: Seeing The Sacred In The Top Films Of The 21st Century. By Craig Detweiler., Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The art of interpretation demands good sense and sensibility before we can arrive at meaning. There are a multitude of choices and methods available. One popular option is to draw together theory and experience. Where we come to the world of theology and ‘top films of the 21st Century,’ the synthesis of thematisation of ideas and representations of experience is a predictable choice. Following this synthetic approach yet developing it as something that can be recycled anew, the theologian and Hollywood script writer, Craig Detweiler, has produced engaging and often exciting reflections upon many top IMDb ranked films of …

Thinking Otherwise: Theology, Inculturation And Climate Change, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2010

Thinking Otherwise: Theology, Inculturation And Climate Change, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Eco-Theology and Creation Spirituality are examples of major attempts to dialogue with science. In the process, they have journeyed through diversity. In contrast, the essay will seek to take another route to think otherwise upon ecological responsibility. First, it comments on the danger of being forgetful of the Christian narrative. This is not to deny the impact of climate change or global warming, but to argue that fear and facts should not necessarily be the starting point for addressing our present concern. The essay then brings into conversation the idea of ‘the quest’ for Jesus the Christ. The quest consists …

The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase Jan 2008

The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

One of the dominant characters within the book of Lamentations is God. God is spoken about and spoken to, although the voice of God is never heard. Various voices within the text speak of God, describing both God’s actions and God’s attributes. These descriptions give rise to various, and at times conflicting images: God is the violent destroyer of the city and her inhabitants; God is an absent God, whose presence is longed for; God is a God of steadfast love and mercy; God is the one in whom future hope lies. This paper analyses the multifaceted portrayal of the …

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2007

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article argues for a phenomenological and theological perspective of psychosis. It draws especially upon Levinas’ philosophy as a way of looking at psychosis and responding with compassion. It aims to show that the world of psychosis parallels the Levinas’ negative characterisation of both ontology and the categories of objectivity, presence and Being. This suggests that the language of ontology itself holds insights into the experience of psychosis and perhaps further that the language of alterity (otherness) could be a possible response to it. Psychosis should not be understood as a ‘psychological problem’, but rather as an altered state of …
