The Maine Question
The University of Maine is home to 18 formal vocal and instrumental ensembles and many informal musical groups, each one with a distinct sound that enriches the academic and cultural life on campus. Many of these groups welcome students of all majors and community members. These performers tour Maine, New England and beyond, promoting the artistic offerings of the university with their voices and instruments.
In this episode of “The Maine Question,” Francis Vogt, director of choral programs and two student performers, will discuss what the music scene is like at UMaine.
Exploring The Relationship Between Designing And Composing With An Analog Synthesizer, Felix Morrissey
Exploring The Relationship Between Designing And Composing With An Analog Synthesizer, Felix Morrissey
Honors College
For my electrical engineering capstone, I designed and built a handheld analog synthesizer. This analog synthesizer is a musical instrument which uses electrical analog components to generate sounds with properties based on the user’s input. My goal when creating this device was to maximize its utility while remaining within the scope of the capstone project. After the synthesizer was built, I wrote and recorded several pieces of music which each utilized the synthesizer prominently. The aim of this process was to be able to explore the relationship between an instrument’s design and the quality of the music produced utilizing it. …
An Examination Of Community Band Members' Ratings Of Skills, Traits, And Behaviors Of Community Band Conductors, Anita-Ann Jerosch
An Examination Of Community Band Members' Ratings Of Skills, Traits, And Behaviors Of Community Band Conductors, Anita-Ann Jerosch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine community band members’ perceptions of the skills, traits, and behaviors of community band conductors. Community band members rated the importance of a range of such skills, traits, and behaviors in relation to their experience within their band. Adult community band members learn differently from the ways that school-aged students do because they have different life experiences, motivations, and educational needs. Adult learners desire to be part of their own learning, and they need a conductor who has the skills, traits, and behaviors that are important from their perspectives.
The conductor/musician relationship is …

Hip-Hop's Diversity And Misperceptions, Andrew Cashman
Hip-Hop's Diversity And Misperceptions, Andrew Cashman
Honors College
The misperception that hip-hop is a single entity that glorifies wealth and the selling of drugs, and promotes misogynistic attitudes towards women, as well as advocating gang violence is one that supports a mainstream perspective towards the marginalized.1 The prevalence of drug dealing and drug use is not a picture of inherent actions of members in the hip-hop community, but a reflection of economic opportunities that those in poverty see as a means towards living well. Some artists may glorify that, but other artists either decry it or offer it as a tragic reality. In hip-hop trends build off of …

Music Can Foster Communication Skills In Middle School Students, Haloye Camille Payabyab Johnson

I will be discussing how music can be a comfort to students as they transition to adulthood. I will give examples from my childhood development and from data collected through interviews with two …

La Representación De La Violencia En México Contemporáneo - The Representation Of Violence In Contemporary Mexico, Taylor Brackett
La Representación De La Violencia En México Contemporáneo - The Representation Of Violence In Contemporary Mexico, Taylor Brackett
Honors College

Real' Blues Artists Get It On For The Folks At The Festival, Diane Genthner
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
To the average music aficionado, the term 'blues' probably conjures up riffs of Eric Clapton or Duane Allman, or the gut-wrenching wails of the late Janis Joplin. These people are all dynamos of the blues genre, but they owe their styles to study of basic blues roots. Their heroes most often be [sic] Robert Johnson, Elmore James, or Billie Holliday.
