Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History Finding Aids

This collection consists of a series of interviews about the local history, geography, and domestic architecture of Veazie, Maine. Many of these were the result of a fieldwork course taught by University of Maine professor Edward D. "Sandy" Ives in 1977 and 1978. The collection also includes architectural survey forms, photos, and floor plans of pre-1940 houses in Veazie. In addition, there are twenty-nine interviews conducted by students in the classes. Three earlier interviews with Addie Weed about Veazie history have been assigned to the collection as has one accession (NA1107) of letters on the same topic.

The Collection is composed of correspondence, financial records, photographs, and plans that were created by Cooper Milliken and his firm, for various clients. The subject of the collection is almost entirely based on his work and is geographically focused around the State of Maine with some outliers in New York and Massachusetts. Albert Lincoln "Bert" Call, 1866-1963, was a professional photographer in Dexter, Maine, from 1887 to 1953. He started as an apprentice to A.G. Fassett and shortly thereafter purchased Fassett's studio. Call was a portrait photographer but was also known for his artistic photographs of the northern Maine woods. Call also served as the official photographer for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad's publication, "In the Maine Woods," from 1915 to 1931.

The collection includes 3,376 photographs dating between 1914 and 1939 of outdoor scenes of mountains, lakes, woods and streams in the northern part of Maine. Included are shots from the …

The Frank Taylor Photograph Collection includes primarily bridge constructions sites showing the progress of construction of bridges around Maine in the 1930s. Several photographs include company owners and construction crews, including two of an underwater diver. There are also a few photographs of bridge sites in Canada and New Jersey, and photographs of family, college friends, Maine scenery.

Higgins, including office records, specifications, plans and elevations, architectural renderings, correspondence and blueprints for a wide variety of buildings mostly in the state of Maine. Ellen Louise Payson was born in Portland, Maine in 1894, and trained as a landscape architect at the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture for Women in Groton, Massachusetts. She gained widespread recognition for her designs for private estates in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.

The collection consists of about 525 architectural drawings including landscape architecture plans, contour drawings, planting diagrams and blueprints. There are also detailed drawings of fences, garden paths, outbuildings and gates. The drawings were done mostly in the 1920s and 1930s primarily for clients in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, with a few …

Personal papers and business records of three generations of the Johnston family, builders of dams and bridges in Maine. Included are materials of William Jasper Johnston; his son, William Percy Johnston; and Percy's son, Donald Percy Johnston. A few items belonging to John Johnston, father of Jasper Johnston are also found in the collection. The collection includes many photographs of dams and other construction projects of the Johnston family. In 1978, the National Register of Historic Places designated the oldest section of the University of Maine campus as an Historic District. The area, framed by the Munson, Sebec, and Schoodic Roads encompassed 10 architecturally significant structures constructed between 1868 and 1913.

In 2010, the Historic District was approved for expansion and now incorporates Fogler Library, Stevens Hall complex, and University Mall.

From August 1607 to summer or fall 1608, the Popham Colony was established on what is now known as Hossketch Point, in Popham Beach, Maine. Rediscovered in 1994, the archaeological remains of the colony are providing insights into one of England's earliest colonial efforts in North America. Among the most exciting hds, are features relating to early seventeenth-century English building practices. Neither Hers Nor Theirs: Dower And Household Relationships Between Widows, Family, And Friends In York County, Maine, Christi A. Mitchell

If architecture expressed a sense of boundaries between family and society and even within the family, the law was central in defining and protecting these. In this article, Christi A. Mitchell, a historian of vernacular architecture from Peaks Island and Alna, Maine, explores the changing definitions of domestic space allotted by law to widows. She uses this aspect of dower rights as a window into changing family relations in the early nineteenth century. Dower assignments reflect an attempt to adapt to shifting household dynamics, to declining emphasis on land-based wealth, to a growing desire for privacy, and to the sanctity …
