Not long ago, on a visit to the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University, I saw a bizarre little illustration on the cover of the Roycroft Quarterly occasioned by the publication of Stephen Crane's first volume of poems, The Black Riders and Other Lines. (Boston: Copeland and Day, 1895). The Roycrofters had substituted polka-dotted rocking horses for the death symbols of Crane's black horsemen. The imagery seemed a surprising anticipation of the Dadaism which occurred about twenty years later in the wake of World War I. The Beardsleyesque, Art Nouveau style of the drawing exemplified the ironies of Crane's …

Four Centuries Of Holinshed's Chronicles (1577-1977), Vernon F. Snow

The composite nature of the Holinshed's Chronicles is manifest in the first volume. It contains William Harrison's description of England followed by Holinshed's history of England prior to the Norman Conquest; then Harrison's description of Scotland; and then Richard Stanyhurst's description of Ireland, Holinshed's history of Ireland down to 1509, and finally Stanyhurst's continuation from 1509 to 1547. The work includes dedicatory epistles addressed to Lord Brooke, the Earl of Leicester, and Sir Henry Sidney, penned by Harrison, Holinshed, and Stanyhurst, respectively. Ideological Conflicts In Early American Books, Clarence H. Faust

The following is an address given by Dr. Clarence H. Faust at the 1957 Syracuse University Scholastic Achievement Dinner. When this article was written almost twenty years later, during the celebration of the bicentennial anniversary, it seems pertinent that the conflicts inherent in the American expression of democracy were so clearly outlined by the late Dr. Faust.

Two hundred years after the American Revolution, the conflict is still being represented for the most part as a war between the people of the united colonies and the government of England. The Colonists who were slow to join the revolutionary cause are still regarded by many as traitors. Whether principle or personal gain led so many to remain loyal to England makes no more difference today than it did then. The English patriots among the colonists paid a hard price for their loyalty to the wrong side.

A Book of Hours written in Dutch was donated to the Syracuse Public Library by J. William Smith in 1908, but received little publicity until 1974, when it was included in an exhibition of medieval art at the Everson Museum, entitled "Medieval Art in Upstate New York." Briefly described in the catalog of that exhibition, and briefly loaned to the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University, this manuscript, coded Smith 36, bears close consideration for two reasons.
