Historic images curated at the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas (NFGT) have been digitized and uploaded to the collections of the Center for Regional Heritage Research in the institutional repository of Stephen F. Austin State University. Searchable metadata is included with each image, and metadata can be harvested through the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). All images are made available at three resolutions; full, medium, and thumbnail, and are available for download under a Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0 International License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/). From 3D to 3D is a research project that involves traditional ceramics and technology to re-create a clay vessel at different scales and in different materials while trying to understand aesthetic and perceptions of value. With a background in Industrial Design, I have always been interested in technology and fabrication methods, three-dimensional (3D) printing being one of them. However, this often implies repetition and standardization, and as an artist I strive to create one-of-a-kind objects that include evidence associated with the making process. A Preliminary Study Of Smithport Plain Bottle Morphology In The Southern Caddo Area, Robert Z. Selden Jr.

This study expands upon a previous analysis of the Clarence H. Webb collection, which resulted in the identification of two discrete shapes used in the manufacture of the base and body of Smithport Plain bottles. The sample includes the Smithport Plain bottles from the Webb collection, and four new bottles: two previously repatriated specimens in the Pohler Collection, and two from the Mitchell site (41BW4) to test whether those specimens align morphologically with the Belcher Mound or Smithport Landing specimens. Results indicate significant allometry and a significant difference in Smithport Plain body and base shapes for bottles produced at the …

As an archaeologist, it is often difficult to empathize with looters and collectors, but we would like to ask that you put aside any pre-conceived notions of judgment as we consider the question: when does a looter’s tool become an artifact? For the two of us, this particular dialogue began in the summer of 2013 on an excavation at Sierra Diablo Cave in western Texas. In that cave was a winch that we assume was constructed on or near the site as a tool for excavating deposits near the rear of the cave.

These data were collected using a Creaform GoSCAN50 running VXElements via the scanner direct control function in Geomagic Design X. There are a wide range of applications for three-dimensional (3D) data in archaeology, and a diverse array of methods for collecting and analyzing those data. In this article, free 3D photogrammetry software (Autodesk 123D Catch) is used to document a series of grave markers. The data are subsequently exported to Geomagic Design X to demonstrate and briefly discuss the various potential analyses that might be used to illustrate the effects of preservation treatments and marker degradation through time. Three-dimensional (3D) digital scanning of archaeological materials is typically used as a tool for artifact documentation. With the permission of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, 3D documentation of Caddo funerary vessels from the Vanderpool site (41SM77) was conducted with the initial goal of ensuring that these data would be publicly available for future research long after the vessels were repatriated. A digital infrastructure was created to archive and disseminate the resultant 3D datasets, ensuring that they would be accessible by both researchers and the general public (CRHR 2014a). Grave markers are often the only physical evidence of a person’s existence and offer opportunities for even ordinary people to ‘speak’ from the grave. Sometimes the deceased selects the marker or leaves instructions for its composition.
In modern times, the grieving family typically chooses the type, style, motif, and inscription according to commercial availability, aesthetic appeal, and budgetary constraints. A cemetery visitor will likely have no idea of the actual circumstances that caused a particular marker to have its shape, design, and decorative elements.
