Killing Them Softly: Building The Blind Assassin, Lina Carro, Nancy A. Knowles

Lina Carro

Margaret Atwood’s Blind Assassin is an enthralling novel whose sensationalist mysteries could leave some readers feeling manipulated. This paper examines the use of narrative structure as a device to strengthen protagonist characterization and proposes that Atwood self-consciously employs a deftly woven, multi-tiered plot structure to challenge conventional reader responses to sensationalist fiction.

‘Where All Things Are Pure And Of Good Report’: The Doctrinal Theology, Religious Practice, And Media Manipulation Of The Christian Science Church, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

The Church of Christ, Scientist is 21st century religious movement that is facing considerable challenges to its existence on many fronts. The church is bound to an unalterable religious theology and intractable management structure established by Mary Baker Eddy, its 19th century founder. For more than a century, the church has followed Mrs. Eddy’s example and successfully manipulated the media to control dissemination of information. Recent financial crisis and legal dissent has generated unprecedented dissent, both inside and outside Christian Science. This research looks at how church leadership struggles to address 21st century problems with its 19th century frameworks.

Historians On Alexander The Great And Macedonian Imperialism, Kyriakos N. Demetriou May 2001

Historians On Alexander The Great And Macedonian Imperialism, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

The history of classical scholarship abounds with examples of metaphors that function as organic links between past and present. As vehicles for contemporary emulation or allies of particular moral and political ideologies, interpretations of ancient life have mirrored the anxieties and controversies of their times. Alexander the Great has been a prominent figure in such historically contextualized interpretations. A comparative study of the reception of this legendary hero by two leading nineteenth-century historians, George Grote and Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos, provides a platform for reflecting on the influence that different versions of Hellenism have had on the construction of historical narratives. Two …

Women On And Off Farms, Aneeja Guttikonda Jan 2001

Women On And Off Farms, Aneeja Guttikonda

aneeja guttikonda

Women are an integral force in India's agricultural system, yet their efforts go largely unrecognized. Not only are there a large number of untrained women working on farms, there are also many skilled, educated women in the field of agriculture. Linkages between professional women in the field of agriculture and rural women are needed to ensure real development of India's agricultural economy.

“No Problem, Mon”: Strategies Used To Promote Reggae Music As Jamaica’S Cultural Heritage, Stephen A. King, P. Renee Foster Jan 2001

“No Problem, Mon”: Strategies Used To Promote Reggae Music As Jamaica’S Cultural Heritage, Stephen A. King, P. Renee Foster

Stephen A. King

This paper examines efforts by the Jamaican government and its surrogates to control the Rastafarian movement and reggae music. Since the 1970s, the Jamaican establishment has employed an adjustment tactic, co-optation, to transform reggae music and Rastafari into a cultural attraction. In recent years, however, Rastafarian images and reggae have become increasingly important in the promotion of Jamaica’s tourist industry. The Jamaican government and its supporters have marketed the Rastafarian movement and reggae music as part of Jamaica’s “cultural heritage.” As a result, the Rastafarian movement has declined as a political and social force in Jamaica. In sum, reggae and …

Ideation And Appropriation: Wittgenstein On Intellectual Property, Julian Friedland Jan 2001

Ideation And Appropriation: Wittgenstein On Intellectual Property, Julian Friedland

Julian Friedland

This paper provides a critique of the contemporary notion of intellectual property based on the consequences of Wittgenstein’s “private language argument”. The reticence commonly felt toward recent applications of patent law, e.g., sports moves, is held to expose erroneous metaphysical assumptions inherent in the spirit of current IP legislation. It is argued that the modern conception of intellectual property as a kind of natural right, stems from the mistaken internalist or Augustinian picture of language that Wittgenstein attempted to diffuse. This view becomes persuasive once it is shown that a complete understanding of the argument against private language must include …

Timbuktu: A Lesson In Underdevelopment, Riccardo Pelizzo Jan 2001

Timbuktu: A Lesson In Underdevelopment, Riccardo Pelizzo

riccardo pelizzo

Th e purpose of the present paper is to investigate Timbuktu’s economic decline in the three centuries elapsed between 1526, when Leo Africanus reached the Mysterious City, and 1830, when the fi rst European explorers arrived in Timbuktu. It is argued that Timbuktu’s decline was neither an accident nor the result of inevitable natural conditions. Timbuktu’s decay was the product of historical and social forces. Specifi cally, it is argued that Timbuktu lost power and prestige because its market decayed. However, it is also suggested that no single factor can account individually for this event. Th e crisis of Timbuktu’s …

The Best Of Two Worlds. Integrating Machine Translation Into Standard Translation Memories. A Universal Approach Based On The Tmx Standard, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

After more than fifty years of research and development, today there is a renewed interest in and enthusiasm for Machine Translation. This new interest is evident in the fact that many organizations and individuals actually use MT for various translation purposes. In addition, many institutions training language professionals take MT seriously enough to offer classes in MT theory and practice.

Alternative Discourses In Southeast Asia, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 2001

Alternative Discourses In Southeast Asia, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

This article brings into focus the question of alternative discourses in the social sciences. Alternative discourses are works that attempt to debunk ideas that have become entrenched in the social sciences, partly as a result of colonialism and the continuing Eurocentrism in the social sciences. In the context of Southeast Asia as well as much of the non-Western world, alternative discourses in the social sciences could also be referred to collectively as counter- Eurocentric social science. This paper discusses the emergence of alternative discourses in Southeast Asia, the defintion of alternative discourse, and the future of these discourses in our …

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz Jan 2001

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Is the family subject to principles of justice? In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls includes the (monogamous) family along with the market and the government as among the "basic institutions of society" to which principles of justice apply. Justice, he famously insists, is primary in politics as truth is in science: the only excuse for tolerating injustice is that no lesser injustice is possible. The point of the present paper is that Rawls doesn't actually mean this. When it comes to the family, and in particular its impact on fair equal opportunity (the first part of the the Difference …

Hannah Arendt E A Modernidade: Esquecimento E Redescoberta Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte Jan 2001

Hannah Arendt E A Modernidade: Esquecimento E Redescoberta Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

Hannah Arendt views Modernity as the epoch of the forgetfulness of politics in its democratic determinations, since the political and the public sphere were either totally reduced to the specter of violence and terror, as it happened in the case of totalitarian regimes, or totally absorbed by the bureaucratic administration of society’s economic interests. In this article I intend to discuss the main arguments that constitute her critical diagnosis of Modernity, retracing them to their inspirational origins, that is, Nietzsche’s and Heidegger’s critical assessments of Modernity. Finally, I try to demonstrate that Arendt has balanced her critical understanding of politics …

Hannah Arendt Entre Heidegger E Benjamin: A Crítica Da Tradição E A Recuperação Da Origem Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte Jan 2001

Hannah Arendt Entre Heidegger E Benjamin: A Crítica Da Tradição E A Recuperação Da Origem Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Refletindo …

"Simply So Different": The Uniquely Expressive Character Of The Openly Gay Individual After Boy Scouts V. Dale, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

Boy Scouts v. Dale was uniformly considered a set back for gay rights. Undeniably, it was not a good result for James Dale or other openly gay individuals who would like to participate in the largest youth organization in the U.S. This Article views Boy Scouts v. Dale in a different light and suggests that the expressive character of the openly gay individual endorsed by the majority may signal an opportunity to argue for greater First Amendment protections. The majority recognized that a single avowal of homosexuality imbues the openly gay individual with a uniquely expressive character. Wherever he goes, …
