Water Music Revisited, Randall Snyder

for Fl., Bb Cl., Bn., Mba., Hpschd As the story goes... in 1717 George Frederick Handel, in an attempt to win back the favor of King George arranged to have this music performed on a barge floating along the rivers Thames. This extraordinarily healthy, clean limbed music is a loose collection of some twenty pieces from which various suites of usually three to five movements are performed in concert. In 1965 I arranged three movements for Wind Ensemble in a purist historically (politically?) correct version (including harpsichord). Then, last March, with nothing better to do, I declared a “Handel Month” …

Return Of The Randwulf, Randall Snyder

for the New Music Agency flute, clarinet, bassoon, marimba, el. piano, drum set Return of the Randwulf revisits some themes from the controversial 1995 orchestral piece Randwulf, written for the Lincoln Youth orchestra conducted by Brian Moore (which a reviewer described as “Otto Von Bismark getting down and funky”). This version features two of the James Brown-inspired sections connected by softer interludes of featuring the winds then marimba and electric piano, all accompanied by a percussion track.

Mexico City Blues: Part V, Randall Snyder

Fl., Cl., Bn., Narrator Mexico City Blues: Part Five features poems using “nonsense”, made-up words reflecting to some extent jazz scat, dada/surrealist automatic writing as well as neologisms ala James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. The overall mood of this grouping suggests humor sliced with large amounts of bewilderment/cynicism. The two principal movements, Glossolalia and Xenoglossy (speaking in tongues ) are separated by two short interludes: Harvest Moon Interlude, based on the song, “Shine On Harvest Moon” quoted in the bassoon (followed by its inversion) that held particular symbolism for Kerouac, and Pastoral Interlude which imitates sheep braying. One interesting moment occurs …

American Zeitgeist: Spontaneity In The Work Of Jackson Pollock, Charlie Parker And Jack Kerouac, Randall Snyder
Randall Snyder
During the decade following World War Two, a body of artistic work was created that clearly articulated for the first time, a distinctly American aesthetic, independent of European models. This is not to say that celebrated works like The Great Gatsby, The Sun Also Rises, Appalachian Spring and Roy Harris’ Third Symphony are not recognized as American masterpieces; but their American characteristics are expressed through content, rather than form or methods of production. Fitzgerald and Hemingway all furthered their apprenticeship in Europe during the 1920s while Copland and Harris studied in Paris with Boulanger. It remained for the next generation …

Elegy For September, Randall Snyder
Randall Snyder
for soprano sax, harp, strings Originally conceived for lute, then arranged for harpsichord. The first section evolves through a veiled opening to a more agitated middle part before a return to the spirit of the beginning. The piece concludes with an arrangement of The Silver Swan, by Orlando Gibbons. Begun in early September, 2001, as a memorial to the composer’s father, the Elegy unfortunately assumed more universal relevance with the unfolding of the tragic events of 9/11 .
