The study was of qualitative nature, and the survey was …

Associating Mathematics To Its History: Connecting The Mathematics We Teach To Its Past, Joseph M. Furner, Ernest A. Brewer Dec 2016

Associating Mathematics To Its History: Connecting The Mathematics We Teach To Its Past, Joseph M. Furner, Ernest A. Brewer

Transformations

Across the USA and around the world now, globalization has taken a strong hold. The purpose of this paper is to explore the historical considerations that can be incorporated in the teaching of mathematics. The paper will also provide suggestions for teaching math by interweaving historical elements into the mathematics instruction. Teachers should strive to bridge the cultural and historical gap among all students by incorporating innovative ideas as well as historical and cultural connections into their teaching so to foster understanding, appreciation, and tolerance for the richness inherent in diversity and a sound understanding of mathematics and appreciation for …

Democratization, Parliamentary Power, And Belligerency: A Quantitative Analysis, Afa'anwi Ma'abo Che Oct 2016

Democratization, Parliamentary Power, And Belligerency: A Quantitative Analysis, Afa'anwi Ma'abo Che

Peace and Conflict Studies

Research linking democratization, institutional strength, and war prescribes the construction of strong central government institutions prior to mass elections as a prime mechanism for mitigating the danger of international belligerency associated with democratization. However, institutional analysis of the democratization – war linkage skews institutional strength measures in favour of the executive, overlooking the other arms of government. Drawing on Côte d’Ivoire’s 2010 – 2011 internationalized post-election civil conflict, which was largely engendered by excessive executive powers and limited legislative leverage, this paper quantitatively evaluates the effect state legislatures bear on the democratization – war linkage. The evaluations yield at least …

From Interview To Transcript To Story: Elucidating The Construction Of Journalistic Narrative As Qualitative Research, Jørgen Jeppesen Sep 2016

From Interview To Transcript To Story: Elucidating The Construction Of Journalistic Narrative As Qualitative Research, Jørgen Jeppesen

The Qualitative Report

There is a call to narrative investigators to be more explicit about their ways of working methodologically, in particular concerning dialogic/performative analysis. The purpose of this study was to examine how journalistic storytelling used as qualitative health research transformed, assembled and sequenced interview into transcripts, scenes, digressions, and other language products. A published story from a socio-narratological study of living with the terminal disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis was selected. Distribution and sequence of modes of transcription, versions of dialogue, transformation of observation and memory to scenes, and conversion of the researcher’s reflection to digression, were identified and calculated. Spots in …

Into The Depths Of Reflexivity And Back Again—When Research Mirrors Personal Experience: A Personal Journey Into The Spaces Of Liminality, Katherine Janzen Aug 2016

Into The Depths Of Reflexivity And Back Again—When Research Mirrors Personal Experience: A Personal Journey Into The Spaces Of Liminality, Katherine Janzen

The Qualitative Report

The context of this paper surrounds my Master’s thesis which was written in 2010 related to recovering crack cocaine addicted mothers who had lost custody of their children. Every qualitative thesis has a story attached to it—an impetus for engaging in the research. When the research combines sensitive topics and the research mirrors the experience of the researcher, decisions must be made considering the research processes and methods. This paper explores the reflexive processes that were employed in the 10 months preceding taking my first thesis course. Using the preface of my reflexive journal as data, three themes arose from …

(Im)Possible Identity: Autoethnographic (Re)Presentations, Seungho Moon, Christopher Strople Jul 2016

(Im)Possible Identity: Autoethnographic (Re)Presentations, Seungho Moon, Christopher Strople

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, we examine experience, identity, and their intersections. Working from an autoethnographic positionality, we investigate the insufficiencies of language and the limitations of any given researcher with an intent to address multiple realities and their respective interpretations of meaning. Autoethnographic narratives with the use of visual, written, and multimedia representations further acknowledge the dilemmas of qualitative researchers when they cannot fully describe subjectivities in research. What is deemed to be valid research is often indicative of a theoretical framework that aggressively seeks to invalidate other perspectives and ways of knowing. Thus, we create research spaces by employing counter-narratives …

Becoming The Change Witnessed: Strategic Use Of Empathy In Morgan Spurlock’S “Straight Man In A Gay World”, Michael W. Tumolo, Jennifer Biedendorf Jun 2016

Becoming The Change Witnessed: Strategic Use Of Empathy In Morgan Spurlock’S “Straight Man In A Gay World”, Michael W. Tumolo, Jennifer Biedendorf

The Qualitative Report

This essay examines the strategic use of empathic communication that fosters a loving struggle for Existenz in “Straight Man in a Gay World” (2005), an episode of Morgan Spurlock’s documentary-styled television program 30 Days. The show functions as a persuasive discourse designed to influence the heterosexual participant and, by extension, the implied audience. This essay offers an overview of key terms in the study of empathy and analyzes key moments of empathic communication in the episode.

Using A Non-Judgmental Stance To Promote Trustworthiness In Action Research, Serge Gabarre, Cécile Gabarre, Rosseni Din Jun 2016

Using A Non-Judgmental Stance To Promote Trustworthiness In Action Research, Serge Gabarre, Cécile Gabarre, Rosseni Din

The Qualitative Report

This article describes the use of action research to increase trustworthiness through a non-judgmental approach. Two foreign language lecturers implemented an action research to improve their teaching with the use of Facebook and mobile devices. In order to remain open to all possible interpretation of the events and to incite their students to provide them with honest feedback, they openly adopted a non-judgmental stance. As a result, students freely revealed how they used funds which were given to them to access mobile Internet. Findings showed that not all students used the money as was anticipated by the lecturers, and that …

Music As Medicine: An Evocative Bi-Autoethnography Of Surviving Divorce, Annabella Sok Kuan Fung May 2016

Music As Medicine: An Evocative Bi-Autoethnography Of Surviving Divorce, Annabella Sok Kuan Fung

The Qualitative Report

As a musician-researcher of Chinese musicians’ journeys, I was confronted with stories that led me to interrogate my own worldviews. As my identity shifted in this experiential process, I became an autoethnographer by serendipity. Autoethnography is storytelling that blurs the boundaries between humanities and sciences, expressing lived experience in novel and literary forms, depicting stories and including authors’ critical reflection on their lives and writing process, with the purpose of transforming self and society. This evocative autoethnography explores the phenomenon of divorce, in reference to my personal experience and another musician’s lived experience interpreted through my understanding as a participant-researcher. …

Understanding The Employment Barriers And Support Needs Of People Living With Psychosis, Margaret Hampson, Richard Hicks, Bruce Watt

The Qualitative Report

This study investigated the employment barriers and support needs of people living with psychosis. A purposive community sample of 137 volunteers drawn from six key stakeholder groups were invited to participate in focus groups and semi-structured individual interviews to elicit their perceptions on the employment barriers and support needs of people living with psychosis. The stakeholder groups included in this study were people with lived experience of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, carers, health professionals, employers, employment service providers, and community members. Data obtained from 14 focus groups and 31 semi-structured individual interviews were transcribed, imported into NVivo 10, and coded …

This is a painting of one of my best friends, Heba. It is from a night when a couple of us were hanging out at my house in high school. Heba was resting on my bed while we were talking and she was caught totally unaware when the picture was taken. She is Muslim (we both are) and Egyptian. Her religion is very important to her, as you can see by the fact she is wearing her hijab. She was so beautiful that I had to paint her. Though she is completely covered, the pictures shows her in a state …

Throughout the history of human existence the ability of the female form to bear offspring has remained a marvel of medicine and science prying the boundaries of our creator. This black and white silhouette of the female form with child gives us a positive and powerful statement. From this comes life, which fuels our mind and powers to help create, preserve, and maintain the health of the human form and fight disease.

This is a painting of a girl names Cintya from Huancayo, Peru. I went to Peru on a medical mission trip with the Foundation for the International Medical Relief of Children in 2012. Cintya was in an orphanage called Rosario that houses victims of sexual abuse. Another girl at the orphanage had gone around the orphanage taking pictures and this painting depicts one on those pictures. I’m not sure what it is about the photo, but I just love the expression on her face and she has a natural, relaxed happiness that can only come from a close friend taking …

I am originally from Boise, Idaho and have wanted to be a doctor since before I can remember. I believe the power of observation to be vital for a physician. I also believe true beauty can be experienced from the eyes, whether looking within or out into the world.

On a mission trip last year to Ecuador while I was waiting for the next surgery to begin I was able to capture this moment. The surgeon I was working with had leaned in to reassure the patient that he would be OK. You can truly see the love she has for her patient and the trust the boy has in her as his surgeon. This piece shows the true female form as a physician in her natural environment.

Classical India provided a unique juxtaposition of art and life. One would readily see monasteries which extolled the values of asceticism and celibacy yet would display female sculptures that exuded sensuality. Such presentations are not hedonistic, but instead present the female form at its most divine and graceful. The tribhanga position was the epitome of this philosophy accentuating the curves and elegance of the sacred female.

Art offers me an avenue to decompress from school life and to use the knowledge I have gained in innovative ways. As a healthcare practitioner, I want to use this passion to develop new …

Art is a very personal statement. When viewing art I look for pieces to which I can relate and enjoy, whether they are realistic or abstract. When I create a piece of art it is my personal observations, experiences and spiritual connection to the piece that helps me create it. After many years of working in charcoal, chalk pastels and acrylics, mostly creating art centered around the female form, I decided to try sculpting in clay. I found the experience to be really challenging, but enjoyable.

This piece is an attempt to bring many pieces of my life with my …

My Body Is Mine: Yet For A Time It Was Yours, Isabel Thompson May 2016

My Body Is Mine: Yet For A Time It Was Yours, Isabel Thompson

be Still

My body is mine, yet for time it was yours. I was made for you - my form created to be your habitat, all aspects of my being working in unison to support your growth and development. You grew and grew, becoming your own person within the liminal space of my womb. On the shoreline of a new life, breathing in and out like the waves washed upon the sand. You are of me, of us, yet separate, your own unique being. I housed you, gave you food and warmth through my body. Flesh of my flesh, blood of my …

Cultivation, Erudition, Edification, Ariel Lee

Cultivation, Erudition, Edification is an exercise of self-portraiture. Few careers are as all encompassing, and all consuming as that as a physician. Becoming a physician is a metamorphosis, it changes who you are and becomes an intrinsic part of who you become. As a medical student, I am measured first by my intellect, and then by my communication skills, social competence and responsibility. In a way, I am somewhat disembodied by my profession. Everyday life comes with a mask on your face, bulky scrubs obscuring your gender and the epochal white coat spilling over with notes, books and instruments. Gender …

Blinding Blue Neon, Tracey Emin May 2016

Blinding Blue Neon, Tracey Emin

be Still

Blinding Blue Neon created in 2000, exemplifies the artists use of familiar forms to establish relationships with the viewer through deeply personal narratives, brutal honesty and a blunt sense of humor. Caste in electric blue, the glowing neon is reminiscent of commercial signage fabricated with the intention of seducing its viewer to consume. The outline of the women, however, is rendered with a loose freedom which gives the form a liveliness and character which transcends otherwise racy connotations. Emin’s autobiographical and confessional work spans a variety of mediums, including drawing, photography, neon, video performance and applique.

Clay is such an exciting and responsive medium in which to work. Most often I only have a germ of an idea when I begin a project. I begin to build a form and before I know it, a wild dance has begun between me and the clay. It seems to know the steps and where we are headed, so I blithely follow along, taking my cues from a bend or an outcropping in the clay. Maybe it’s starting to look like a weeping woman, or a cat with a crown on its head. I just let the dance go …
