Pirate Nests And The Rise Of The British Empire, 1570–1740 By Mark G. Hanna, John Donoghue Dec 2017

Pirate Nests And The Rise Of The British Empire, 1570–1740 By Mark G. Hanna, John Donoghue

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Mark Hanna’s important book makes two very valuable contributions to the history of the British Atlantic. First, it recovers piracy’s vital part in colonial economic growth during the seventeenth century. Secondly, it explains piracy’s ultimate demise in the early eighteenth century by tracing the regulatory revolution that turned an assemblage of wayward Atlantic colonies into a profitable commercial empire.

Grenzüberschreitungen Und Kulturvermittlung Im Werk Von Robert(O) Schopflocher, Reinhard Andress

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Articulated Racial Projects: Towards A Framework For Analyzing The Intersection Between Race And Neoliberalism In Higher Education, Jon S. Iftikar Dec 2017

Articulated Racial Projects: Towards A Framework For Analyzing The Intersection Between Race And Neoliberalism In Higher Education, Jon S. Iftikar

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Scholars have been documenting the effects of neoliberal educational policies, practices, and ideologies on staff, faculty, and students of color in higher education. Their work has raised important conceptual questions about the relationship between neoliberalism and race: Has neoliberal hegemony brought about a significant rupture with previous racial regimes, or does the current racial-neoliberal formation in higher education represent a re-articulation, a recombination of pre-existing elements in new formations? Our ability to answer this question will aid in theory development and lead to new strategies for interventions. In this article, I argue that the intersection between race and neoliberalism should …

Normal Schools Revisited: A Theoretical Reinterpretation Of The Historiography Of Normal Schools, Garrett H. Gowen, Ezekiel Kimball Dec 2017

Normal Schools Revisited: A Theoretical Reinterpretation Of The Historiography Of Normal Schools, Garrett H. Gowen, Ezekiel Kimball

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

This article provides a theory-driven account of the emergence, development, and ultimate disappearance of the normal school as a unique institutional form within higher education. To that end, this article engages new institutionalism in order to construct a composite narrative from the historiography of teacher education which counters the cursory treatment of normal schools in popular and widely-used synthetic histories of higher education. This article also responds to the challenge of better integrating normal schools into the historiography of higher education and suggests future avenues for theory-driven history.

Affirming Strengths-Based Models Of Practice, Trevor G. Gates, Brian Kelly Nov 2017

Affirming Strengths-Based Models Of Practice, Trevor G. Gates, Brian Kelly

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Affirming and strengths- based practice with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and communities started to become more mainstream in the 1970s and 1980s and continues today. Whereas stigmatization of LGBTQ individuals and communities was once the accepted norm, most mainstream professional organizations in social work and allied helping professions today treat LGBTQ identity as part of the normal spectrum of human experience and support affirming and strengths- based models of practice with LGBTQ communities (American Counseling Association, 2013; American Psychological Association [APA], 2008; Council on Social Work Education [CSWE], 2015; National Association of Social Workers, 2005). Practice With The Gay Male Community, Michael P. Dentato Phd, Msw, Tyler M. Argüello, Courtney Wilson

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Understanding the complex needs of the unique and widely diverse gay male community underscores the importance of practitioners to robustly examine the wide array of sociocultural, lifespan, health and mental health factors. While gay men are a subpopulation of the broader lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community, practitioners should realize that they have unique needs associated with their sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and gender expression sometimes similar to their LBTQ counterparts but often separate from factors that impact LBTQ individuals. In the same fashion, while gay men may encounter similar life challenges as their nongay counterparts separate …

Preparing Social Workers For Practice With Lgbt Populations Affected By Substance Use: Perceptions From Students, Alumni And Service Providers, Michael P. Dentato Phd, Msw, Brian Kelly, Michael R. Lloyd, Nikki Busch

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Trends in the field of service among those with alcohol and other drug addictions highlight the urgent need for schools of social work to effectively train students to serve clients with substance use disorders, and have cultural humility to effectively serve disproportionately affected LGBT consumers. Online surveys and interviews examined perceptions of graduate social work students and alumni in a certified alcohol and drug counselor program, along with several service providers within an urban setting in the US. Results indicated that students and alumni did not feel adequately prepared through coursework to practice with LGBT populations affected by substance use, …

Separating Markup From Text, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal Nov 2017

Separating Markup From Text, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

As more and more online versions of Humanities texts are created, it is becoming commonplace to embed elaborate formatting, for example, through the use of HTML. But this can interfere with computerized analyses of the original text. While it may seem, at first, straightforward to simply strip markup from text, this is not the reality. Many digital texts add things that appear to be legitimate content according to the markup syntax, for example, line numbers, and even apart from this issue, existing tools for stripping markup produce inconsistent results. Apart from adopting and enforcing strict conventions for adding markup to …

Beyond Pacifism: Teaching World War I Literature From Left To Right, Joyce Wexler Oct 2017

Beyond Pacifism: Teaching World War I Literature From Left To Right, Joyce Wexler

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The military historian Yuval Noah Harari accounts for the enduring allure of war by calling attention to a change in soldiers' memoirs that occurred in the mid-eighteenth century. Soldiers began to describe how they felt rather than what they did. Harari introduces the term flesh-witnessing to distinguish inner experience from eyewitness testimony. Flesh-witnesses speak of combat as a transformative and indescribable experience comparable to the sublime. This view is often attributed to militarists, but Harari shows that it also motivates pacifists. Even antiwar arguments like those of Erich Maria Remarque are based on the authority of the flesh-witness. To test …

Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Book Description: The current daily experiences of undocumented students as they navigate the processes of entering and then thriving in Jesuit colleges are explored alongside an investigation of the knowledge and attitudes among staff and faculty about undocumented students in their midst, and the institutional response to their presence. Cutting across the fields of U.S. immigration policy, theory and history, religion, law, and education, Undocumented and in College delineates the historical and present-day contexts of immigration, including the role of religious institutions. This unique volume, based on an extensive two-year study (2010-12) of undocumented students at Jesuit colleges in the …

Critical Theory And The Struggle For Recognition, David Ingram Sep 2017

Critical Theory And The Struggle For Recognition, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

I focus on the recent attempt by Habermas to provide a formal criterion for testing the legitimacy of group rights. Habermas argues that group-rights are legitimate only when they protect groups from discrimination by other groups. Group rights that aim to preserve groups against their own members, by contrast, are illegitimate. In my opinion, this way of drawing the distinction overlooks the link between anti-discrimination and preservation. Furthermore, I argue that preservation of a group identity can be legitimate so long as the group in question allows freedom of exit from the group.

History Of Computing, George K. Thiruvathukal, David B. Dennis

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The social and organizational history of humanity is intricately entangled with the history of technology in general and the technology of information in particular. Advances in this area have often been closely involved in social and political transformations. While the contemporary period is often referred to by such names as the Computing and Information Age, this is the culmination of a series of historical transformations that have been centuries in the making. This course will provide a venue for students to learn about history through the evolution of number systems and arithmetic, calculating and computing machines, and advanced communication technology …
