Transdisciplinary Teams And Aging In Place Design : The Interior Designer's Role, Liliana Alicia Custy

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined factors influencing participatory research team effectiveness in aging in place (AIP) design (Stokols, et al„, 2008). Although research on AIP design characterizes AIP as collaborative process, there are few studies on the factors that affect collaboration in participatory research applied to AIP. This study used a qualitative narrative strategy in a multiple case-study analysis conducted from a transdisciplinary research (TR) perspective. The case-study focused on the factors that enhanced and constrained Open n Prototype Initiative (OPI) team effectiveness.

TR is a precise type of teamwork of integrative endeavors, focused on the science and society interface, and aimed …

This Was Uncalled For : Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius Subverts The Genre Of Traditional Autobiography As An Attempt At Rendering His Life, Krystal Alvarez Jun 2009

This Was Uncalled For : Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius Subverts The Genre Of Traditional Autobiography As An Attempt At Rendering His Life, Krystal Alvarez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to explore why and how the author Dave Eggers subverts the genre of traditional autobiography in his memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I compared Eggers' work to Gertrude Stein's The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and William S. Burroughs' Junky. I found that like Stein and Burroughs, Eggers utilized various rhetorical devices outside of traditional autobiography because he could not find the means to express himself within the genre. Eggers employed various rhetorical methods reserved for fictional texts, such as stream of consciousness, characterization, and irony, in order to reconcile …

Creating Identity : The Role Of George Gordon, Lord Byron, In Realizing The Romantic Poet, Cristina Estevez Jun 2009

Creating Identity : The Role Of George Gordon, Lord Byron, In Realizing The Romantic Poet, Cristina Estevez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Romantic Age in literature was a time of change and revision, especially in the world of heroes and the fictional worlds in which they lived and played. Many socalled "heroes" came into play at this time, but this was not enough for the Romantic poets, especially George Gordon, Lord Byron. The Byronic hero became the solution to the problem created by an unsatisfactory hero. In creating the Byronic hero, Byron changed literature, allowing poets and readers alike to participate actively in the processes of writing and reading. This work will examine Byron's development of his hero in Childe Harold's …

Propuestas Para Una Reconceptualización Surrealista Y Postmoderna De La Sexualidad Femenina En Los Textos De Cristina Escofet E Isabel Allende, Zoila Clark May 2009

Propuestas Para Una Reconceptualización Surrealista Y Postmoderna De La Sexualidad Femenina En Los Textos De Cristina Escofet E Isabel Allende, Zoila Clark

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Female sexuality has commonly been viewed as the passive counterpart of male sexuality. Building upon Adrienne Rich's theory of compulsive heterosexuality, I would suggest that the fundamental location of this problem lies within the subconscious. Cristina Escofet's stance on this issue is to argue in favor of a deconstruction of Jungian archetypes, revealing their constructed rather than intrinsic character. In this dissertation, I study representative texts by Escofet and Isabel Allende and show not only how they depict patriarchal compulsive heterosexuality, but also try to reconceptualize female sexuality through surrealist and postmodern techniques such as self-reflection, dialogue with our double …

These similarities are also reflected within the overall arrangement of each composition and use of instrumentation as well. The following pages will analyze each of these compositions in accordance with several important musical factors. These elements are form and chord …

Environmental Stewardship And The Fate Of The Brazilian Amazon : A Case Study Of The Madeira Complex, Karyna Do Monte Mar 2009

Environmental Stewardship And The Fate Of The Brazilian Amazon : A Case Study Of The Madeira Complex, Karyna Do Monte

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present paper analyzes a case study of the Madeira Complex, which plans to build two massive dams on the Amazon River's largest tributary, to identify religious discourse in ecological debates. Three sides of the debate are investigated in order to analyze the various perspectives of proper human relations with the rest of nature that emerge. The Brazilian government and large corporations support the project as a necessary step to meet future national energy needs, the indigenous groups settled in federal territories that are directly affected by the environmental impact of the project and have mixed opinions, and environmentalist organizations …

Buddha And Moses As Primordial Saints: A New Typology Of Parallel Sainthoods Derived From Pali Buddhism And Judaism, Upananda Thero Dedunupitiye Mar 2009

Buddha And Moses As Primordial Saints: A New Typology Of Parallel Sainthoods Derived From Pali Buddhism And Judaism, Upananda Thero Dedunupitiye

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Comparative studies in sainthood in world religions, especially Pali Buddhism and Judaism has been a substantial component of my academic interests. Constructed out of my research findings the new typology of sainthood lays emphasis on the fact the two religions have a common universal pattern of sainthood, hence parallel sainthoods.

My research concludes that Siddhartha the Buddha and Moses the Prophet as primordial saints, as saintliness as a human quality in Pali Buddhism and Judaism originates from these personalities. Any other successive types of sainthood in the said religious traditions are derived from the main type, the primordial sainthood.

Argentine Music Styles Contributions To Contemporary Jazz Language : Analysis Of Six Original Compositions, Agustin A. Conti

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to present and analyze six original compositions and arrangements by Agustin A. Conti that demonstrate the influence of Argentinean music on Jazz composition. Conti’s compositions combine elements of the Chacarera, Candombe, Murga, Milonga, and Malambo styles, with the odd-meter ostinato and metric modulation used in modem Latin jazz. The thesis includes scores of the six works, as well as a CD of the thesis recital, performed by a jazz quartet consisting of tenor saxophone (or soprano), piano, electric bass and drum set.

Identity Formation And Public Perception In The History Of American Mormonism, Jaquelinne M. Biver Mar 2009

Identity Formation And Public Perception In The History Of American Mormonism, Jaquelinne M. Biver

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study inquires into the institutional identity of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since its founding in 1830. The study takes a historical stance in discussing the relationship between American public perceptions and the Church's developing internal identity, tracing these changes through three distinct historical stages. Building on the works of historians and sociologists such as Jan Shipps, Armand Mauss, and Terryl Givens, this study hopes to contribute to the understanding of new religious movements and the progression from sect to church.

The study finds that Mormon identity and American perceptions of Mormons have had an inter-influential …

My Impediment Adulthood : Quarterlife Crisis And Beyond, Corey Ginsberg Mar 2009

My Impediment Adulthood : Quarterlife Crisis And Beyond, Corey Ginsberg

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My Impending Adulthood: Quarterlife Crisis and Beyond is a collection of personal essays that chronicles the time before, during and shortly after the narrator's quarterlife crisis. The further removed from childhood she grows, the more the narrator clings to aspects of her youth she fears she'll lose when she resigns to enter the adult word-a place she believes is stifling and terrifying. Each essay in this collection serves as a lens through which the adult world is examined, admired, feared, avoided and misunderstood as the narrator works to accept that she must grow up, despite nearly three decades of persistent …
