Karl Kraus And The Jewish Question: Assimilation, Language, And Persecution In Vienna, 1874-1936, Chad Russell Fulwider Nov 2000

Karl Kraus And The Jewish Question: Assimilation, Language, And Persecution In Vienna, 1874-1936, Chad Russell Fulwider

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the Viennese satirist Karl Kraus and his responses to the "Jewish Question" and anti- Semitism. Through a comprehensive analysis of his major works, this project reveals Kraus's underlying views on Jewish identity and his ideas for resolving the "Jewish Question." Kraus attacked acculturated German-speaking Jews for "failing" to assimilate into society. In his mind, the bourgeois Jewish intellectuals had retreated into a "transparent ghetto" of aesthetic values, literary expression, and capitalist-materialism, represented by the "Jewish" press. For Kraus, anti-Semitism persisted because the Jews maintained their status as "Jews," and therefore could not assimilate into Viennese society. His …

A Case Study Of The Performing Arts Production Program As A Means Of Inclusive Community Building Within The Performing Arts Management Domain, Kawachi Ahmon Clemons

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem examined in this study involved the lack of inclusiveness within upper level positions in the performing arts production arena. Traditionally, the production domain has centered on a Eurocentric Model where homogeneity is favored.

The study was conducted with three major phases in mind. The first was to bring the reader to an awareness of what it means to build an inclusive community. The second included historical data to confirm the industry's bias practices of exclusion of minorities and women. The third and final phase shows the development and implementation of programming which lends itself to diversifying the performing …

Political Corruption In The Caribbean Basin : A Comparative Analysis Of Jamaica And Costa Rica, Michael W. Collier Jun 2000

Political Corruption In The Caribbean Basin : A Comparative Analysis Of Jamaica And Costa Rica, Michael W. Collier

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Political corruption in the Caribbean Basin retards state economic growth and development, undermines government legitimacy, and threatens state security. In spite of recent anti-corruption efforts of intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations (IGO/NGOs), Caribbean political corruption problems appear to be worsening in the post-Cold War period. This dissertation discovers why IGO/NGO efforts to arrest corruption are failing by investigating the domestic and international causes of political corruption in the Caribbean. The dissertation’s theoretical framework centers on an interdisciplinary model of the causes of political corruption built within the rule-oriented constructivist approach to social science. The model first employs a rational choice analysis …

The Function And Failure Of Plantation Government: Interpreting Spaces Of Power And Discipline In Representations Of Slave Plantations, Karen Michelle Carson Apr 2000

The Function And Failure Of Plantation Government: Interpreting Spaces Of Power And Discipline In Representations Of Slave Plantations, Karen Michelle Carson

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation focuses on representations of the physical construction and landscape of Southern slave plantations in order to explore the power relationships among inhabitants of those plantations and how those power relationships attempted to function and failed to establish a system of discipline and governance. While every plantation functioned violently in some form, many plantations appear to have attempted to instill a sense of place and permanence of status in slaves with more than just physical violence or obvious and overt forms of mental coercion and abuse. As a supplement to the strategic (and oftentimes random) physical violence inflicted on …

Picking Up The Pieces: Body Parts And Female Power In Shakespeare's The Rape Of Lucrece, Daphne Blum Mar 2000

Picking Up The Pieces: Body Parts And Female Power In Shakespeare's The Rape Of Lucrece, Daphne Blum

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In The Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare anatomizes Lucrece's body-fragments the whole, splits apart the parts. He does so not only to expose the otherwise concealed act of rape-which is hidden within the mysterious and "invisible" female genitalia-but to indicate that Lucrece's parts, through analogy with Pagan and Christian figures and theories, are powerful, even combative, but always pure.

In the first section, individual body parts connect Lucrece with so-called "wild women," including the Amazons, Medusa, and Philomela. In the second section, body parts either link Lucrece, or sever Tarquin, from the Divine. In the final section, Classical Mythology and …
