Lutheran Preaching And Its Relation To The Audience, Richard R. Craemerer
Lutheran Preaching And Its Relation To The Audience, Richard R. Craemerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
Persuasive public speech demands the close relation between the speaker and his audience. This fact is true also of preaching. The most common complaint against preaching is that the preacher does not adequately reach the attention and will of his hearer. The first and last need of preaching is that it bring the Word and will of God to the hearer; it must bear witness to Christ, it must teach the Word. To do that, it must not merely be true and Scriptural, but it must actually engage the hearer's interest.
Religion And The Modern World Picture, Theodore Graebner
Religion And The Modern World Picture, Theodore Graebner
Concordia Theological Monthly
The scientific world picture has undergone greater changes in the past forty years than in the preceding four centuries. For one thing, the materialistic view which controlled the study of the cosmos has crashed. But that is not all. To adapt our idea of the physical world to the demands of reason "requires of scientific thought one of the greatest changes in orientation which it has ever had to make in its secular effort." The words are those of Louis de Broglie in the volume announced (p. 261).

The retention of the old translation is all the more surprising in view of the fact that one of the R. S. V. translators, E. J. Goodspeed, had, in his own American Translation of 1939, offered a translation ("Blessed are those who feel their spiritual need": similar to, but clearer than, Moffatt's of 1913: "Blessed are those who feel poor in spirit"), which, while it does not convey the full intent of the original, is much truer to the Greek and clearer in English. Goodspeed has reasserted, rather than defended, his translation in his Problems of New Testament Translation (1945), …

Memorandum Concerning The Church Situation In Germany, Martin Kiunke

The VELKD hopes to become the long-desired corpus Lutheranorum... Rudolph Rocholl (superintendent in Goettingen, Kirchenrat in Breslau, and president of the Prussian Lutheran Free Church) saw the disastrous influence of unionism more clearly than others and shortly after 1900 appealed to the Lutheran provincial churches to form a corpus Lutheranorum on a clearly defined confessional basis. His appeal was left unheeded.

The three feature articles in this issue are related to a topic of immediate interest and deep concern to all Christians and to Lutherans in particular: Christian Fellowship Without Denial of One Word of God. The question of Lutheran fellowship occupied our Synod at Chicago; the problem of Lutheran world unity was the heart and core of Lund; and the thought of an ecumenical Christianity will be the central theme of the proposed Amsterdam meeting in 1948. The first article, ''Luther's Concept of the Una Sancta.," by your magazine's editor pro tem, originally appeared in Christendom and is republished with …
The Consensus Of Sandomierz. A Chapter From The Polish Reformation, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr
The Consensus Of Sandomierz. A Chapter From The Polish Reformation, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr
Concordia Theological Monthly
From April 9 to 14, 1570, representatives of Polish Calvinism, of Polish Lutheranism, and of the Bohemian Brethren met in the city of Sandomierz in southwestern Poland and signed a document acknowledging each other's confessions and doctrines as orthodox and looking forward to the time when all three could be united in one confession and one national Polish Church; that document was the so-called Consensus Sendomiriensis, the Consensus of Sandomierz. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the conditions which produced it, and to explain the circumstances under which it was adopted.

Memorandum Concerning The Church Situation In Germany, Martin Kiunke
Concordia Theological Monthly
Since the collapse of 1945 the church situation in Germany is horribly confused, for the political chaos seriously affected the church conditions. But even before the political collapse a number of trends developed in the Protestant churches which brought havoc to the churches. This disorder was accentuated by the political collapse to such a degree that conditions never were so confused in German church history as at present.

Homiletics: Outlines On The Nassau Pericopes, J. H. Fritz

The homiletic material presented for the church year 1947-1948 differs from that of other years in a twofold way. First, we are presenting an entirely new series of pericopes, that of the Nassau System, gotten out by Bishop Heydenreich in 1843. His system presents texts for a period of seven years. We have not strictly chosen the texts of any one particular year, nor have we limited ourselves exclusively to texts from the four Gospels. Secondly, instead of the usual longer sermon outline, we are giving a few brief paragraphs referring to the suitability of the text for the particular …

The Una Sancta In Luther's Theology, F. E. Mayer
The Una Sancta In Luther's Theology, F. E. Mayer
Concordia Theological Monthly
Luther's concept of the Una Sancta was first and last soteriological; not sociological, not statistical, not organizational, not eschatological. Luther's emphasis on soteriology in his definition of the Church can be understood only in the light of his theological principle. Scholastic theology had not satisfied him. Its Aristotelian method had failed to bring assurance of peace to his heart, and its autosoteric principles had been unable to quiet his conscience. The Apostle's message: "The sinner is justified by faith alone," changed Luther's theology both as to method and to content.

St. Augustine's Theology Of Grace, John Van Lierop
St. Augustine's Theology Of Grace, John Van Lierop
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
As a result of my study it is my conv1·ction that Grace is the heart of the Gospel - and that with all the talk about Ecumenical Christianity today, I believe it will be hopeless to strive for one great "World Church" unless there is first an agreement and unity about the Theology of Grace, which is the foundation-stone of all Theology.
Lund, W. Arndt
Lund, W. Arndt
Concordia Theological Monthly
During the first week of July all eyes were focused on the little town of Lund, Sweden, entertaining the World Convention of Lutherans. It is a town that is entitled to honorable mention in its own rights. Pleasantly situated in the maritime plain of southwestern Sweden and twenty miles distant from the port of Malmoe, it is the seat of one of the two Swedish universities and can justly claim to be an important center of scholarship and learning.

Recent Studies In The Chronology Of The Period Of The Kings, Walter R. Roehrs
Recent Studies In The Chronology Of The Period Of The Kings, Walter R. Roehrs
Concordia Theological Monthly
It is only natural that the period of the monarchy should hold a prominent place in Old Testament chronological studies. Nowhere in the Old Testament do we find such a mass of chronological data as in the Books of Kings and Chronicles. In fact, the history of the kings of Judah and Israel stands unique among ancient records. Nowhere else is such a complete and detailed system of computation employed; nowhere else do we find such an intricate and exact system of relating events chronologically to other events in the same country and to happenings in foreign lands.
History As A Weapon In Controversy, W. Spitz
History As A Weapon In Controversy, W. Spitz
Concordia Theological Monthly
Eduard Fueter, ascribing the development of modern historiography to the Lutheran Reformation and more particularly to the purposes of polemics, declares that Protestant church history was created solely for the needs of confessional polemics. Ancient church history was to furnish the proof that Protestantism, in contrast to Catholicism, had preserved the original purity of Christianity. Medieval church history was to expose the terrible darkness to which the rule of the Antichrist had led.

The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen
The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen
Bachelor of Divinity
To describe adequately the Lutheran Army chaplain is a little more difficult. Although all the material mentioned would apply to him in a general way, other factors need to be brought into the picture which are not given expression in any of the literature that has been produced about the chaplain and his work. The doctrinal position of our Church, its polity, its missionary character, and its devotion to the Holy Scriptures as the only norm of doctrine and rule of life are all matters which affect the status of the Lutheran Army chaplain, emphasize his need, and tend to …
The Blessed Results Of Justification, H. J. Bouman
The Blessed Results Of Justification, H. J. Bouman
Concordia Theological Monthly
In human affairs the results often are not in proportion to the preparations. There the old saying "The mountain labors and brings forth a ridiculous mouse" is frequently true. It is never thus in divine affairs. There the results always are commensurate with preparations, even though our limited vision and understanding fails to see it. Let us remember this as we study the blessed results of justification according to Rom. 5:1-5.

Luther's Text-Critical Study Of 2 Samuel 23:8, Paul Peters

On the 8th of April, 1546, the Council of Trent, in its Fourth Session, passed the Decree Concerning the Edition. and the Use of the Sacred Books and declared that the "old and vulgate edition . . . be ... held as authentic" and that "it be printed in the most correct manner possible."
With this decree the Council of Trent rejected both Luther's translation of the Bible from the Hebrew and Greek original and his revision of the Vulgate. While Luther had finished translating the greater part of the Bible two decades prior to the Fourth Session of the …
