Bruce Springsteen: American Poet And Prophet, Donald L. Deardorff Ii
Bruce Springsteen: American Poet And Prophet, Donald L. Deardorff Ii
Faculty Books
Like other major musical artists, Bruce Springsteen’s work has reflected, revealed, and reacted to modern American realities over the course of his forty-year career.
Since releasing his first record in 1973, Springsteen has sold more than a hundred million albums worldwide, played thousands of concerts, and won Grammy, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Academy awards. More importantly, however, he is one of the few twentieth-century singer-songwriters to serve as the voice of his generation, a defining artist whose works reflect the values, dreams, and concerns of many Americans. In Bruce Springsteen: American Poet and Prophet, Donald L. Deardorff II explores …
A Bridge Over Troubled Water: Le Tombeau De Couperin, Anne Morris
A Bridge Over Troubled Water: Le Tombeau De Couperin, Anne Morris
Musical Offerings
Le tombeau de Couperin was composed during a turbulent time in the life of Ravel, a time when he had been emotionally scarred from the effects of war and had lost both his mother and many of his close friends. This composition may have served as the only friend whom Ravel felt comfortable enough to share with his innermost feelings. Autobiographical in nature, this piece follows the transition from Ravel’s carefully nurtured childhood and youth to serious maturity in his post-war adult life. There is personal emotional depth found in this piece, although at first it may appear somewhat hidden …
Altered But Not Silenced: How Shostakovich Retained His Voice As An Artist Despite The Demands Of A Dictator, Hope R. Strayer
Altered But Not Silenced: How Shostakovich Retained His Voice As An Artist Despite The Demands Of A Dictator, Hope R. Strayer
Musical Offerings
Can music that is regulated and restrained by a dictator still be inspired? This question reveals ideology concerning how music should be created and valued. Does outside control restrict artistic integrity and autonomy? Not all composers have been free to write whatever their soul demands. People in authority have held power and control over artistic processes. Dmitri Shostakovich was a Russian composer whose work was subjected to the tastes of a tyrannical ruler and Communist party. Though Shostakovich did not compose in an environment that fostered musical exploration, his work should not be mourned but celebrated. Shostakovich was not a …

Three Kings And The Bright Star Of Fame, Emalyn J. Bullis
Musical Offerings
Many phenomena in music history as well as in American history have helped develop and shape the types of music listened to today, but none have been so fresh as looking back to twentieth-century popular music and the several key individuals that “ruled” in this area. These “rulers” were hailed as “kings” firstly as a media ploy, but the American public did nothing but encourage the titles. This is somewhat confusing considering American’s pride in their democratic political system but history shows that in several key American cultural changes the “Kings” crowned in the music sphere are representative of these …

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios
This portfolio contains poems, creative nonfiction, and short stories, all original pieces of writing produced while completing the Creative Writing Minor at Cedarville University. The poems come from my own life, and while they are not intended to be a cohesive narrative, arranged in this order they tell a story of growing up, leaving home, and finding love. The nonfiction pieces come from a collection centered around my experiences in high school marching band, though a love story is present there as well. The short stories also draw heavily from my own experiences and passions, exploring themes that are important …

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios
This portfolio contains poetry, nonfiction, and one short fiction story. Two nonfiction pieces appearing here, “Welcome to the Armory” and “Survey: Headphones” have also been published in the online journal Prick of the Spindle. All pieces were written between August of 2012 and May 2013. I consider this collection the best of my college writing.
I pay extra attention to sounds in my pieces. I also try to achieve a certain level of ostranenie—a poetry term that means “making the familiar strange”—because I am fascinated with the attempt. This Level of Living refers to a state of high awareness, of …

Thy Word Is Still Truth: Essential Writings On The Doctrine Of Scripture From The Reformation To Today, Peter A. Lillback, Richard B. Gaffin Jr.
Thy Word Is Still Truth: Essential Writings On The Doctrine Of Scripture From The Reformation To Today, Peter A. Lillback, Richard B. Gaffin Jr.
Alumni Book Gallery
This new collection of Reformed thinkers' writings from the Reformation to today brings together key documents on the inerrancy of Scripture in one readable volume.
One of the hallmarks of Westminster Theological Seminary since its beginning in 1929 has been a high view of Scripture that reflects the historic Reformed theological and confessional tradition. Thy Word Is Still Truth confirms that Westminster still holds this high view.
The book's title builds on the important influence of E. J. Young s classic book on inerrancy, Thy Word is Truth. This current anthology unapologetically borrows that title, emphasizing an abiding commitment …

Morality Of Contraceptives Based On When Personhood Begins, Joella R. Gerber
Morality Of Contraceptives Based On When Personhood Begins, Joella R. Gerber
Student Papers
The use of contraceptives has been controversial in recent days, especially concerning the government mandate for insurance and health care companies to financially cover contraceptives for their policy holders. The term ‘contraceptive’ includes anything that deliberately prevents conception or impregnation, including condoms, birth control pills, intrauterine methods, and barrier methods (Merriam-Webster, 2013). The morality of contraception largely hinges on the belief of when personhood begins.
