Why Animal Ethics Committees Don't Work, Denise Russell Dec 2011

Why Animal Ethics Committees Don't Work, Denise Russell

Between the Species

Abstract

Animal ethics committees have been set up in many countries as a way to scrutinize animal experimentation and to assure the public that if animals are used in research then it is for a worthwhile cause and suffering is kept to a minimum. The ideals of Refinement, Reduction and Replacement are commonly upheld. However while refinement and reduction receive much attention in animal ethics committees the replacement of animals is much more difficult to incorporate into the committees’ deliberations. At least in Australia there are certain structural reasons for this but it is likely that most of the reasons …

Telling It Like It Is: A Proposal To Improve Transparency In Biomedical Research, John Hadley Dec 2011

Telling It Like It Is: A Proposal To Improve Transparency In Biomedical Research, John Hadley

Between the Species

Recent proposals to improve public communication about animal-based biomedical research have been narrowly focused on reforming biomedical journal submission guidelines. My suggestion for communication reform is broader in scope reaching beyond the research community to healthcare communicators and ultimately the general public. The suggestion is for researchers to provide journalists and public relations practitioners with concise summaries of their ‘animal use data’. Animal use data is collected by researchers and intended for the public record but is rarely, if ever, given significant media exposure. By providing healthcare communicators with specific details about their animal use, researchers can play a role …

Animals-As-Patients: Improving The Practice Of Animal Experimentation, Jane Johnson, Christopher Degeling Dec 2011

Animals-As-Patients: Improving The Practice Of Animal Experimentation, Jane Johnson, Christopher Degeling

Between the Species

In this paper we propose a new way of conceptualizing animals in experimentation – the animal-as-patient. Construing and treating animals as patients offers a way of successfully addressing some of the entrenched epistemological and ethical problems within a practice of animal experimentation directed to human clinical benefit. This approach is grounded in an epistemological insight and builds on work with so-called ‘pet models’. It relies upon the occurrence and characterization of analogous human and nonhuman animal diseases, where, if certain criteria of homology and mechanism are met, the animal simultaneously becomes a patient and a spontaneous model of the human …

Bell's Spaceships Problem And The Foundations Of Special Relativity, Francisco Fernflores Dec 2011

Bell's Spaceships Problem And The Foundations Of Special Relativity, Francisco Fernflores

Philosophy

Recent ‘dynamical’ approaches to relativity by Harvey Brown and his colleagues have used John Bell’s own solution to a problem in relativity which has in the past sometimes been called ‘Bell’s spaceships paradox’, in a central way. This paper examines solutions to this problem in greater detail and from a broader philosophical perspective than Brown et al. offer. It also analyses the well-known analogy between special relativity and classical thermodynamics. This analysis leads to the sceptical conclusion that Bell’s solution yields neither new philosophical insights concerning the foundations of relativity nor differential support for a specific view concerning the existence …

Texture Mapping With Mudbox And 3ds Max, Joshua Holland

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this study was to determine the intuitiveness of texture mapping and compressibility of files generated using Autodesk 3ds Max 2012 versus Autodesk Mudbox 2012. This will be used by anyone starting to learn how to texture map and who is comparing programs that have the capability to do so. This will save users time in researching which program is better suited for their needs.

This study investigated how Autodesk 3ds Max 2012 and Autodesk Mudbox 2012 compared in mapping textures to 3D models. A basic computer skills assessment test and an intuitive test was administered to twelve …

Photo Manipulation In The Media, Stephanie Coffaney Dec 2011

Photo Manipulation In The Media, Stephanie Coffaney

Graphic Communication

In today’s society there are photos everywhere; they are in magazines, advertisements, newspapers, and books because photos make the text or the story stand out. Some may not know it, but most of these photos have been edited and retouched. This research paper attempted to determine the majority opinion of what types of photo editing was above the tolerable limit, as well as the public awareness of media manipulation. The different levels of photo editing included changing the contrast, removal of blemishes and dust, addition/removal of objects, and addition/removal of main subjects. The results revealed that most people are aware …

La Patología Del Habla Y Lenguaje Bilingüe, Shannon Blike Dec 2011

La Patología Del Habla Y Lenguaje Bilingüe, Shannon Blike

World Languages and Cultures

This project will first review the history of Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology in the United States of America. Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology is important in our diverse country where 245 languages are spoken. After a general overview of the field, I will focus on the Spanish language because it is the second most spoken language in the U.S. according to the U.S. Census in 2010. Then, I will review different aspects of Spanish linguistics such as phonology, morphology, and semantics. The understanding of such terms is pertinent to the practice of Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology.

Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologists have many responsibilities because they …

City Of Industry: Los Efectos Concretos En El Condado De Los Angeles En La Economía, El Medio Ambiente Y La Salud Pública, Christina Andrea Hernandez

World Languages and Cultures

This project attempts to document the development of the City of Industry, located in eastern Los Angeles County, and to examine the environmental as well as socio-economic effects this industrial hub maintains on its surrounding neighborhoods. City of Industry, since its incorporation in 1957, has established an alarming precedent as a privatized city that has informed concrete changes in the local economy, the environment, and the public health of the surrounding communities that are predominantly Latina(o).

The research undertaken for this project represents an interdisciplinary intersection of a special topic in the study of Industrial Engineering: the global logistics industry, …

Madonna Inn: A Hotel In Context, Galadriel Bree Highhouse

Master's Theses

This paper examines the political, economic and social influences that contributed to the development of the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. I provide a brief history of the hotel industry and place the Madonna Inn within the historiography and argue that the nexus of three elements in the 1950s and 1960s led to the growth and popularity of the Madonna Inn: fear of nuclear war, growth of the middle class, and the rise of automobile culture in America.

The Gendered Geography Of War: Confederate Women As Camp Followers, Rachael L. Ryen Nov 2011

The Gendered Geography Of War: Confederate Women As Camp Followers, Rachael L. Ryen

Master's Theses

The American Civil War is often framed as exclusively masculine, consisting of soldiers, god-like generals, and battle; a sphere where women simply did not enter or coexist. This perception is largely due to the mobilization of approximately six million men, coupled with the Victorian era which did not permit women to engage in the public sphere. Women are given their place however, but it is more narrowly defined as home front assistance. Even as women transitioned from passive receivers to active participants, their efforts rarely defied gender norms. This thesis looks at Confederate female camp followers who appeared to defy …

Utilitarianism And Replaceability Or Are Animals Expendable?, Stefan Sencerz Sep 2011

Utilitarianism And Replaceability Or Are Animals Expendable?, Stefan Sencerz

Between the Species

In her very interesting paper, “Peter Singer on Expendability,” L. A. Kemmerer re-examines Peter Singer’s utilitarian argument implying that some being are replaceable and the implications of this argument for the issue of treating animals. I attempt to defend Singer, and more generally utilitarianism (including the principle of replaceability), against these objections. I argue that, given a utilitarian outlook, some animals are indeed replaceable. But I also argue that few animals are replaceable in practice.

Negotiating The Anthropological Limit. Derrida, Stiegler, And The Question Of The Animal, Nathan Van Camp Sep 2011

Negotiating The Anthropological Limit. Derrida, Stiegler, And The Question Of The Animal, Nathan Van Camp

Between the Species

Although much has been written about the so-called political, ethical and religious turns in the thinking of Jacques Derrida, few have noticed that his late writings were marked by what we could tentatively call a “zoological turn.” This is surprising given that in The Animal That Therefore I Am Derrida clearly stated that the question as to what distinguishes the human from the animal has for him always been the most important question of philosophy. This essay will attempt to offer a preliminary exploration of this still largely uncharted aspect of Derrida’s thought. Starting from a brief overview of Derrida’s …

Problematizing Literature Circles As Forums For Discussion Of Multicultural And Political Texts, Amanda Haertling Thein, Megan Guise, Deann Long Sloan Sep 2011

Problematizing Literature Circles As Forums For Discussion Of Multicultural And Political Texts, Amanda Haertling Thein, Megan Guise, Deann Long Sloan

English

In a six-week literature circle unit in a tenth-grade classroom, one group of students discussed Dorothy Allison's novel Bastard out of Carolina. By criteria frequently used to judge the quality of discussion, this literature circle was successful. However, several key moments are highlighted that point to the limits of literature circles as they are typically implemented for engaging students in the full critical depth of multicultural and political texts. Finally, suggestions are offered for rethinking literature circle pedagogy with the goal of offering students a more nuanced and robust experience with such texts.

All Too Human: "Animal Wisdom" In Nietzsche's Account Of The Good Life, Jonathan D. Singer Aug 2011

All Too Human: "Animal Wisdom" In Nietzsche's Account Of The Good Life, Jonathan D. Singer

Between the Species

In this paper I argue that a certain understanding of “animality” – or that a certain problematization of the traditional human-animal hierarchy and divide – is central to Nietzsche’s account of the good life. Nietzsche’s philosophical project is primarily directed against those “metaphysical oppositions of values” that traditionally structure how we think, feel and live, and in this paper I submit that, for Nietzsche, the classical opposition between the human and the animal is the most basic and the most pernicious, for it undergirds the oppositional hierarchy between rationality and irrationality that has turned human life against itself. I draw …

Trends In Logo Design Among Fortune 100 Companies, Juliane Bone

Graphic Communication

Using ten different criteria to rigorously inspect ten logo designs, this paper concludes that conceptuality is perhaps the most important component of a brand’s identity. Graphic Communication students, who are the future of the industry, offered up their conclusions of these logos and the success of the design. With the incorporation of articles and opinions of those in the field, trends in the latest logos are found.

Structural Box Design For High Quality Beverages, Caroline Shyu

Graphic Communication

This study compared two different top designs for a wine box to determine which design gave the structure more durability. The results showed that the Twist ‘N Give, a new corrugated wine box design with a twist top, appeared to be weaker. The Twist ‘N Give is an alternative choice to the existing corrugated wine box with a traditional tuck top style.

The experimental research method was used for this study. Two samples of each style of top, the twist top and the tuck top, were tested on the Lansmont Squeezer Compression Tester for the peak force and the deflection …

Arguments By Analogy, Matt Donner Jun 2011

Arguments By Analogy, Matt Donner

Philosophy

This paper is an inquiry into the largely unexamined analysis of arguments by analogy (ABA). By exposing the degree of philosophical complexity, which ultimately renders evaluation of ABA subjective, we shall see that the most appropriate doxastic attitude to adopt, with respect to the conclusions drawn from these arguments, is often suspension of judgment. A critical examination of Copi’s criteria for evaluating ABA shows that while these criteria work well for simple arguments, they fail when considering more philosophically profound ABA. This paper supports these claims by using Cleanthes’ teleological argument for the existence of God from Hume’s Dialogues Concerning …

From Where I Am Standing: Indigenous Narrative And Photo Documentary, Nestor R. Veloz Passalacqua Jun 2011

From Where I Am Standing: Indigenous Narrative And Photo Documentary, Nestor R. Veloz Passalacqua

Ethnic Studies

Latin American Indigenous Peoples (LAIP) are a marginalized segment in Latin America. They inhabit a sub-America and are forced to migrate due to socio-political struggle and cultural coercion. LAIP experience a transnational and transborder migration that reflects the quality of cultural hybridity and of regional, ethnic, and cultural crossings. The purpose of this study is to research LAIP ways of reclaiming and reproducing cultural practices that elicit Indigenous awareness, knowledge, and ethnic identification in a transnational setting. The study examines through interviews and photographs transborder experiences and the lives of the participants. As a result, the project reveals that LAIP …

The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles Jun 2011

The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles

Psychology and Child Development

While the 20th century has simultaneously brought about a growth in counseling and a reemergence of secularism, counseling in the 21st century has focused its attention on interventions that are sensitive to multicultural facets in clients’ lives. As professionals increasingly embrace multicultural competency in counseling and therapy, religion and spirituality arguably stand out as cultural and personal factors that are a salient part of framing one’s experiences, beliefs, values, behavior, and illness patterns. Despite the growing understanding of the pervasiveness and importance of spirituality and religion, most psychologists have little training in dealing with religious and spiritual issues. …
