Planning And Power: Architectural Reflections Of Student Minorities At Cal Poly, Caroline Ambrose

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper will dis sect the power dynamics of the built environment at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) as it relates to spatial representation for minorities on campus. By observing campus growth throughout the university’s history through the lenses of campus minorities, including women, black students, queer students, and disabled students, a pattern of dismissal and reluctanct compliance comes to light. While the administration’s rhetoric often reflects goals of inclusivity and diversity, the architectural history of Cal Poly reflects a lack of investment and reaction to the concerns of student minorities.

Cal Poly Students Struggle For Gay Rights, Dio Capilla

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper follows the gay rights movement at Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo through the 1970s. Cal Poly’s Gay Students Union (GSU) was first proposed in 1972, but had to undergo a series of legal battles before Cal Poly administration finally granted the organization official school recognition four years later. University President Robert E. Kennedy only signed the Union’s bylaws under the direct advisory of the State Attorney General. Kennedy claimed his opposition to the club was only for legal reasons, but this claim did not hold up against previous statements made by the administration. Further discrimination was faced …

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

Scholarly work on the experience/erasure of Miss Margaret Chase: first and only female president of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. With the main focus being on difficulties throughout her life, and impact of the male gaze on her legacy: which resulted in an extreme lack of direct primary sources. Through analysis of gender issues during Chase’s presidency and the effect of her erasure on campus it is clear that there is a disadvantage to being a woman in a position of power on Cal Poly’s campus. This disadvantage is chronicled throughout Chase’s life, but also to this day as there …

Court’S In Session: The Development Of Pre-Law Programs At Cal Poly, Megan Hayes

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The American Bar Association, the association which accredits lawyers, allowing them to practice law, does not recommend a specific path or major in preparation for law school. It does, however, recommend taking demanding courses that will foster skills like problem-solving, critical reading, research, etc. So how does one prepare for law school, especially like a Polytechnic School at Cal Poly? When Cal Poly was founded in 1903, it did not even have a pre-law program, let alone any programs in the liberal arts/social sciences area. It was not until the later development of the Political Science Department that pre-law programs …

The Creation Of The Cal Poly Architecture Department And The Decline Of Multi-Disciplinary Education, Annie Martinez

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The creation of the architecture department spurred the decline of multidisciplinary education among the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). This development led to the separation and hierarchy of majors within CAED as it destroyed the communal nature of an experimental and innovative teaching approach. The process of this change reveals the detrimental impacts to the faculty, curriculum and culture of the department. The faculty was divided, leading to a less interdisciplinary curriculum and a less communal nature of innovative learning among the College community.

Historical Issues In Cal Poly’S Fraternities, Vincent Mejia Mar 2020

Historical Issues In Cal Poly’S Fraternities, Vincent Mejia

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In recent years, fraternities have grown exponentially at Cal Poly and have served many good purposes on campus. However, from the time of its inception in 1949 until now, there existed a great many problems. Much of the research that exists depicts the negative aspects of fraternities, such as hazing, rape, and racial antagonism. Cal Poly itself has also experienced similar issues throughout the course of its history. Hazing has been an issue at Cal Poly since before any Greek organization was on campus. It is easy to see how that behavior transitioned over once fraternities began arising. An early …

Cal Poly And Wwii: A Time Of Change, Matthew Schivo

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of World War II on higher education, specifically California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. WWII completely changed the dynamics of the school from the years 1939-1946 bringing in various federal programs as well as Naval programs to help support the school during financial hardship. Forgotten Opposition: Cal Poly Reactions To American Imperialism In The 1980s, Cooper Lock

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The Reagan Administration employed aggressive rhetoric in combating the supposed spread of communism in Latin America during the 1980s. The El Salvador ruling party’s fight against the leftist Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front became a hotspot for United States foreign aid and involvement. Extensive amounts of money poured into the region, inciting equally extensive disapproval and distrust from the American people. The reactions to these events at a national level have been extensively covered, whereas university students’ have been left relatively in the dark. This paper analyzes Cal Poly reactions and responses to United States foreign policy throughout the decade. …

Not only did McPhee bring Cal Poly out of the Depression, but he expanded the college as well in terms of funding, projects, and buildings. By the advent of World War Two Cal Poly failed as an institution only in having been unable to supply …

This paper is focused around Cal Poly’s promotional materials including pamphlets, brochures and course catalogs, emphasizing how pictures and words were used to market the school. Through exploration it is clear these materials focused on some majors more than others, specifically agriculture and engineering. Cal Poly: A Shift From State Dependence To Donor Dependence Over The Course Of Three University Presidents, David Vacchio Mar 2018

Cal Poly: A Shift From State Dependence To Donor Dependence Over The Course Of Three University Presidents, David Vacchio

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

Cal Poly’s period of financial uncertainty under McPhee during the Great Depression led to an expanded effort between the school and the state to find alternative ways of funding the school, and gradually began to lean towards a system less involved with the state due to its budget restrictions and laws preventing it from loaning its credit. The creation of the Cal Poly Foundation in 1940 was an important step in distancing the school from the jungle of state regulations, but McPhee had to consistently struggle with the law for the right for Cal Poly to use the Foundation due …

The second stage of this history was the funding problems the project had and how they had to focus on public-private partnerships as well as donations from Cal Poly alumni and the San Luis Obispo community to receive their funding. …

Cal Poly’S Vietnam Veterans: Neglected But Not Voiceless, Faye Messner

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

Vietnam Veterans at Cal Poly offered an interesting and important voice to the overall discussion of the war on campus. Student veterans participated in the same debates on the war and offered their opinions. They spoke skeptically about the war and participated in campus protests alongside civilian students. Unfortunately, life as a student veteran at Cal Poly was difficult. The benefits they received through the G.I. Bill were difficult to acquire and had many limitations. Likewise, Cal Poly administration made it difficult for veterans to receive the support they needed. Because of this, they formed their own groups to create …

Cal Poly’S Role In Globalization, Ava Fry Mar 2018

Cal Poly’S Role In Globalization, Ava Fry

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper discusses the effects of an uneasy position for America in the 1980s business markets on the university’s decision to internationalize the curriculum, specifically the responses of Cal Poly’s administration and its student body. The rhetoric used for the proposal of an International Education Office in 1988 by the Academic Senate, revealed an unexpected motivation behind its creation that intrigued me to look further. It seemed that the education system was rapidly globalizing in schools across the nation. A dramatic increase of studies on programs abroad support this claim, however, research failed to show the same international action at …

“What Were You Wearing?”: Victimization Of Sexual Assault Victims At Cal Poly, Joanna Birns

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper will argue that Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo place greater blame and responsibility on women victims of sexual assault than their perpetrators. Sexual assault and sexual assault prevention methods in local media will be examined, as will three recent Title IX cases of Cal Poly students. Placing abundant blame and responsibility on the victims of sexual assault creates a culture of victimization, which discourages victims from reporting their sexual assaults. Although this paper does not offer up suggestions of how we can better Cal Poly’s approach to sexual assault, it hopes to spark a conversation about improving …
