Theater Auf Der Wieden - History Of Location, Audiences, And Mechanics, Jonathan Jaworowski, Abriana Tereza, Rachel Thomaschefsky

2022 Festschrift: Mozart's Die Zauberflöte

There are many historical connections between Vienna’s theater scene and the original theater that Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte was performed in. This paper discusses the audiences of the Theater, the location, architecture and mechanics. Although much has changed within theaters since the 18th century, some things still remain the same.

A Search For Enlightenment In Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Briana Castro, Ryan Jones Dec 2022

A Search For Enlightenment In Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Briana Castro, Ryan Jones

2022 Festschrift: Mozart's Die Zauberflöte

The Enlightenment was a time of philosophy, critical thinking, and brotherhood. Society at the time felt it was possible to find true meaning and connections with the world around them. Ideas were spread through newspapers, pamphlets, and social gatherings such as lodges. This spread of ideas reached Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and affected his opera, Die Zauberflöte. Themes of the Enlightenment are found in the characterizations of Tamino, Papageno, Pamina, the Queen, and Sarastro. This essay describes characterizations and analyzes how themes of Enlightenment appear in the opera.

A Musical Analysis Of Die Zauberflöte, John Flannery, Mattheia Rudolph, Rachel Heikkinen

2022 Festschrift: Mozart's Die Zauberflöte

Upon analysis of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, we are able to discern the compositional techniques throughout which reflect the plot and inner motives of each character. We also analyze Masonic ideas hidden in the subtext of the opera and how they are explored through the use of reinterpretation of past material, affekt, and text painting.

Mozart & Schikaneder: Production Of Theatre In The 18th Century, Quinne Weinzierl, Miranda Preuss, Haley Tromblee

2022 Festschrift: Mozart's Die Zauberflöte

Die Zauberflöte was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with the libretto written by Emanuel Schikaneder. In this essay, we aim to present our findings regarding Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in relation to the theater culture found in the 18th century. Because of the lack of writing on the production of Die Zauberflöte we aimed our research towards Schikaneder and the general layout of the theater surrounding the time Die Zauberflöte premiered. Using cross referencing and sources from the 18th century, we have put together a general synopsis of how Die Zauberflöte was likely promoted and produced. All of this information comes …

Times Are Changing: Addressing Racism And Sexism In Die Zauberflöte, Cassidy Wiltjer, Anna Winn, Linnea Johansen Dec 2022

Times Are Changing: Addressing Racism And Sexism In Die Zauberflöte, Cassidy Wiltjer, Anna Winn, Linnea Johansen

2022 Festschrift: Mozart's Die Zauberflöte

The eighteenth century philosophy regarding discrimination based on gender and race do not align with the philosophy of the modern era. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, written in 1791, is full of racist and misogynist remarks which are woven carefully into the music and plot of the opera. Racism is evident through the character of Monostatos and the claims that his status as a Moor make him less valuable as a human being. Additionally, the character Sarastro exemplifies a rational and powerful male while the Queen of the Night, while powerful in her own right, is the villain: an unruly, emotional woman. …

A Phoenix From The Ashes: Jackson Park’S Japanese Garden, Cultural Exchange, And The Endurance Of Japanese Sites After Pearl Harbor, Brittany Murphy May 2022

A Phoenix From The Ashes: Jackson Park’S Japanese Garden, Cultural Exchange, And The Endurance Of Japanese Sites After Pearl Harbor, Brittany Murphy

Asian Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Japanese gardens in the United States have a history that dates back to the World’s Fairs of the late 19th century, when Japan used the World’s Stage to project an image of itself as a powerful nation founded on both modern industrial techniques and traditional culture to compete with dominating Euro-American powers. The history of the Japanese garden in Chicago’s Jackson Park, gifted to Chicago by the Japanese government for the 1893 Columbian Exposition, tells the story of Midwesterners’ love and appreciation for the gardens while also demonstrating the implicit legacies of Executive Order 9066. The garden remained a crucial …

The Forgotten Concentration Camps Of 2022, Morgan R. Schroeder May 2022

The Forgotten Concentration Camps Of 2022, Morgan R. Schroeder

History: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Many people would like to believe they could never be a Nazi, but as we speak a genocide not unlike the Holocaust is happening in China and North Korea. We must address this issue if we are to see ourselves as capable of taking on a threat as great as the Nazis. Millions of people are facing the worst oppression this world has ever seen and they need our help in any way we can afford it. In this paper, I compare Nazi Germany to China (1930s-present) and report on how Americans perceive the latter country. Although the terror and …

At The Dinner Table, Briana L. Kunstman May 2022

At The Dinner Table, Briana L. Kunstman

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

A young woman and feminist analyzes privilege and prejudice through the experience of being at a family dinner. She questions the way that people view “controversial conversations” and why they are labeled that way. As she opens discussions that are “politically charged” and “inappropriate” at the dinner table, she is met with criticism and questions. By looking at the #Metoo movement, 97% movement, Black Lives Matter movement, and Health at Every Size movement, alongside a variety of other significant points, the woman reflects on silenced voices, minority identities and basic human rights in America.

Coming Out As A Queer Latinx, Giselle Barajas May 2022

Coming Out As A Queer Latinx, Giselle Barajas

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

This paper explores the feminist theories post-colonialism and gender theory to better understand the coming out experience for the queer latinx community. The latinx community face unique hurdles when coming out including battling cultural values, colonialism, language barriers, and identity. In order to better understand the coming out journey of queer latinxs and create safe queer spaces I propose that we reimagine familismo to emphasize love and acceptance over colonial ideas of machismo and marianismo. We can also decolonize both feminist theory and language.

The Difference Between Life And Death: Intellectual Appeasement And Ideological Remolding Of Philosophers In Mao-Era China, Rosalie Looijaard

Asian Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The Proletarian Cultural Revolution marked the near destruction of Chinese tradition and put intellectuals in China in danger – Chairman Mao Zedong stopped at nothing to ensure anything and anyone that opposed his politics would either be assimilated or removed. Some intellectuals chose to appease him – out of fear or naivete, while others stood firm in their beliefs. This paper examines the similarities and differences between the lives and fates of two philosophers during the rise and fall of Mao Zedong - Feng Youlan and Zhang Dongsun. Both philosophers were amiable towards socialism, even before Mao rose to power. …

The Challenges Of Making French Gender-Inclusive: How To Stop Leaving The Non-Binary And Genderfluid Community Out Of The Conversation, Nicole W. Grafon Apr 2022

The Challenges Of Making French Gender-Inclusive: How To Stop Leaving The Non-Binary And Genderfluid Community Out Of The Conversation, Nicole W. Grafon

Women's and Gender Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Gender-inclusivity in the French language is being made mainstream at an extraordinarily slow pace because there is a lack of education for francophone citizens regarding the clear definition of inclusive language due to little to no support from politicians in France. The solution to making the French language more gender-inclusive at a quicker pace is to incorporate non-binary grammar early on in French education worldwide.

Anatomy & the Makings of me:

(A Chapbook)

Back in 2020 quarantine took a mental toll on many, including myself. I was already overwhelmed with academics, personal issues, and an overall pessimistic outlook. For years I've struggled with my body image, and for the past year or so I've been trying to improve on my self-love and acceptance. Taking back my body and my feelings towards it by keeping centered on my thoughts, not the thoughts of others. Hence the concept for this chapbook project.

Anatomy is a look at all the squishy bits of matter and emotion I’ve been …

But I think they should stay within their own groups.” “Negroes and Mexicans have as much right to love as we do, but they still depreciate property.” These are all words that were written about by grandma and her two brothers when they moved to Moline, Illinois. They were born in the U.S. and had just been evicted from their apartment …

Crooked Smile, Kaitlin Jacobson Apr 2022

Crooked Smile, Kaitlin Jacobson

Vázquez-Valarezo Poetry Award

As a songwriter, I love connecting my poetry to songs. There are so many similarities between life and music, and that is just beautiful to me. I wrote this poem about very real experiences I have had, about the idea of sugarcoating reality for the sake of what life really looks like under the surface. This is similar to my songs, when my melodies are seen as catchy but the lyrics are overlooked. As a queer woman, there have been many times where I have felt silenced, or where my pain has been overlooked and my lyrics haven't been taken …

The Dilemma Of Banned Books: Questioning The Ethics Of Censoring Literature In Schools, Kyle King Apr 2022

The Dilemma Of Banned Books: Questioning The Ethics Of Censoring Literature In Schools, Kyle King

Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest

Literature, specifically in the form of novels, has been a vital organ of the public education system within the United States. Not only does reading such works transform us into better close readers and strengthen our vocabulary, but the texts at hand can be very essential to analyze specific contexts or issues that might have existed either throughout history or even in the present day. In today’s country, the issue of banning certain books from school curricula has become as prevalent as ever, where mostly Southern Republican officials are calling for lists of books to be restricted from teaching due …

Flippin' Medicine: Reflection And Action In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence Apr 2022

Flippin' Medicine: Reflection And Action In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

Historically, medicine has centered around a single model: that of the white, cisgender, heterosexual, abled, middle-class male body. While it is well known that patients of diverse identities often present differently, medical education continues to use this dominant, normative model as the standard for all patients while ignoring marginalized groups in their descriptions. "Flippin' Medicine" reflects on the prevalence of normative models in medicine, as well as the ways in which these models slip past the notice of providers with privileged identities. The author then describes the process behind creating a resource, titled Flipped Medicine: A Guide to Deconstructing the …

Bisexuality In 21st Century Media, Bethany Abrams

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

This paper sets out to examine bisexuality in 21st century media in order to highlight the importance of good bisexual representation. Media that perpetuates harmful stereotypes only adds to the discrimination that bisexual individuals experience. This paper begins by discussing stereotypes and types of discrimination that are particularly relevant to the bisexual community. After this, pieces of media are analyzed thoroughly for how they portray bisexuality. The three main pieces that are analyzed are Alex Strangelove, Atypical, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
