Charles F. Woolley was a school teacher and avocational archaeologist in New Jersey in the late nineteenth century. One of his notebooks, which survives in a local history repository, includes details of his collection, which was largely prehistoric. Information from the notebook was used to identify site locations, and to track down several artifacts that Woolley had donated. I have removed specific site location information from this publicly available version of the conference paper.

The effort focuses on describing existing conditions and identifying measures to minimize and control flood loss within a 48,396.8-acre area of the drainage north of the city of Fort Worth. The first book in the series is an accordion-style book contrasting a trip my Great Grandmother took to Yellowstone National Park by covered wagon from Oklahoma Territory in 1903 with my trip from Maine to the same park in 1978. This article seeks to show the origins of the professionalization of anthropology by examining early doctoral dissertations in this field and their authors. The bibliography consists of citations with biographical details of the authors, when known, of doctoral dissertations in anthropology from United States educational institutions up to 1930. One hundred twenty-four citations are given in all, representing 18 institutions. Forty-one of the dissertations were not written for degrees in anthropology. Besides documenting the existence of anthropological work outside recognized graduate programs of anthropology, the bibliography provides a demographic profile of anthropology and shows the distribution of subdiscipline concentrations and …

This report provides a summary of the site in its historical context and details the archaeological excavation of twenty-one grave shafts, ten of which contained skeletal remains. The archaeological work was undertaken in consultation with the Office of the State Archaeologist.

This article considers a set of controversial images, primarily taken between 1880 and 1920, depicting lynchings and racial violence. Emory University has made these images publicly available, prompting some to worry that the collection will re-inflict trauma on those who suffered under racism in the United States. The articles asks, in part: if new initiatives in museums or other public spaces could help Americans to collectively confront their inner demons and move beyond the timeless repetition of trauma.

Knowledge of early Caddo culture comes from both archaeological and ethnographic sources. Enough archaeological research had been completed by the early 1970s to provide a fairly thorough chronology for the major pre-Columbian developments in the Caddoan area. and archaeological research has been extensive since that time.

Accounts of the DeSoto expedition of 1541-1542 constitute the earliest source of ethnohistoric data on the Caddo. Translations of the De Soto documents may be found in Bourne, Robertson, Varner and Varner, and more recently, Clayton. The Frank Benson site (41TT310) is an extensive and significant prehistoric Caddo and historic 19th century archeological site on a broad upland landform (352- 372 feet amsl) overlooking the Big Cypress Creek Valley in Titus County, Texas. In this paper we discuss recent archeological investigations at the site, which identified extensive and well-preserved Middle and Late Caddo components associated with a clay mound and extensive daub deposits from at least one burned Caddo structure.

From September 27-30, 1999, TxDOT archeologists conducted archeological testing of site 41UR36 within the proposed areas of impact for the FM 1002 widening at Glade Creek in Upshur County. Archeologists hand-excavated four 1 -x- 1 -m test units and one 1.5-x-0.5-m test unit. The goal was to assess the integrity of the portion of the site within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) and determine whether it was eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
