Modernizing And Diversifying Western's Audio Engineering Curriculum: First Stage, Kyle Haddad
Modernizing And Diversifying Western's Audio Engineering Curriculum: First Stage, Kyle Haddad
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This was the first stage in a much larger study designed to update the audio engineering curriculum at Western University, to reflect modern trends and to diversify beyond the UK 1970s prog rock bias of traditional curriculum. An undergraduate student was hired from within the Popular Music Studies program here at Western University to work in the studio for the summer, and to provide recommendations for change in studio design at the end fo the summer based on that work. The student worked on his own material, and engineered record sessions for a PhD candidate currently at work on a …

Need to Know
When writing the concept for the game, I wrote this with some form of an understanding of the Persona 5 universe, but I do hope that within the limited storytelling with the minimalistic format, I wrote the lore for this twine game in a way that needs minimal understanding of any other games.
Game Inspirations
The game was inspired by Persona 5, where I drew the inspiration of having a reflective world that ran on purifying hearts. I also drew inspiration from NieR: Automata, which lightly discussed the idea of what beauty actually means, and the lengths …

Twine 6: Deathly Afraid, Jahliem Brown
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
Deathly Afraid's key concept is to scare the player and make them question their choices. I thought of different ideas and scenarios on how my game will present itself to the players. A constant theme in horror games is to make players choose a path of light or dark. The light side is when the player decides to be a hero, risks their life to save others and becomes the one to solve the mysterious evil that hunts the town or kills everybody. The dark side allows the player to explore the evil side by being the main villain and …
Twine 5: 2099: Project Icarus, Nick Devitz
Twine 5: 2099: Project Icarus, Nick Devitz
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
For my Choose Your Own Adventure project, I created a cyberpunk, action-oriented story called 2099: Project Icarus. In this story you play as an unnamed, ungendered character who I imagined players giving any identity to them that they wished. The protagonist is a quick-thinking problem solver, able to adapt to any situation they are facing. The story, is that you were fired from your job at a company called Xerxes Technologies, after digging into an incident you believe they were trying to cover up. The main objective of the story is to bring down Xerxes, with hard evidence of their …
Twine 4: The Cost, Nicole Williams
Twine 4: The Cost, Nicole Williams
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
The Cost is an interactive fiction told through second person, following the character (“you”) as they wake up to discover themselves in a world they hardly remember. Outside there is an apocalypse, and a doctor has fixed the character to help rectify the world. While there are choices to make at the end, all of them are focused on “immortality” and what the cost of that is.
I came into the process of this game with the world already in my mind, knowing that I wanted it to be an apocalypse type of story. But besides that, I didn’t know …

Twine 3: We Must Be Killers, Oliver Mckeone
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
I’ve always been a fan of murder mysteries, that much is true, but “We Must Be Killers” is a murder mystery based on “Who Killed Markiplier?”, a video based murder mystery made by YouTuber Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach. After watching Mark make a murder mystery where all his friends played roles as various characters, I figured it’d be fun to make “We Must Be Killers” along a similar vein. Each character is based on one of my friends, with input from them about what they wanted their characters to be like. I’ve had this idea bouncing around in my head for …

Twine 2: A Western, Matthew Bandy
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
My game has changed a lot since I originally came up with the concept. Obviously, I took inspiration from western media such as deadwood, Clint Eastwood films, and Red Dead Redemption. The game ended up much more in-depth than I originally planned, but I don’t believe that to be a bad thing in of itself. I believe the biggest flaw of this game was my inexperience with coding. I had so many ideas to add – inventory lists, a map, special text effects – but I didn’t have the knowledge or time to implement these. I think, though, I still …
Twine 1: Shepherding, Alexander Rainer
Twine 1: Shepherding, Alexander Rainer
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
Shepherding will technically be the second creation in a greater project of mine I’ve been calling Project Bleak. The first creation is unfinished and still a WIP, but is meant to be an anomalous NES-style game called Bleak. The story behind it is that evidence of an obscure game development team from the late era of NES games has resurfaced, and a community of lost media gurus, classic game experts, and similar people (plus anyone else who wants to help) has formed to hopefully unravel the mystery of who they were.
Bleak is really just meant to be an odd …

How Theatre Produced By Autistic People Dismantles The Medical Model Of Disability, Ira Eidle
How Theatre Produced By Autistic People Dismantles The Medical Model Of Disability, Ira Eidle
Symposium of Student Scholars
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability that has a long history of being misunderstood. Said misunderstandings have led to falsehoods about autism and autistic people. The stigma surrounding autism encourages non-autistic people to see themselves as the best advocates for autism, leading to non-autistic people speaking over autistic people constantly. This has come to be known as the medical model of disability. Most autistic people do not consider autism to be a mental illness or disorder. (Kupferstein 2019) That is why when autistic people become informed on these aspects and band together, those misunderstandings can be mitigated. One such way is …

Session 2: Panel 1: Presenter 2 (Paper) -- Pope Leo X And The St. Peter’S Indulgence: The Accidental Path To Reformation And Church Fragmentation, Charlotte Levine
Young Historians Conference
Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, the concept of of Original Sin has defined prayer and ritual. As this idea evolved throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance, its teachings proved to be profitable, as exemplified by the creation of indulgences. This paper examines the sale of indulgences for the rebuilding of St. Peter’s Basilica under the jurisdiction of Pope Leo X from 1515–1518, and its implications on the Catholic Church’s splintering authority in Western Europe. As a direct effect of the use of indulgences for financial gain, Martin Luther wrote and presented his Ninety Five Theses, an event widely …

"Susanoo Annotated", Samuel Bostwick
COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium
For this project, I opted to take a deep dive into a religious culture I was not familiar with, namely, Shinto. To demonstrate my knowledge on the subject, I decided on annotating one of the myths of the religion; I selected the myth of Susanoo slaying the Orochi from the Shinto chronicle known as the Kojiki. The citations are presented in MLA format, obtained largely from the College of DuPage's library databases.

Gaming And Culture: How Videogames Can Affect Global Players' Preception And Understanding Of Japan's History And Culture, Garrett Davies
Capstone Showcase
Video game developers have the ability to create synthetic worlds. These are places where players have the ability to immerse themselves within a culture presented to them by the creators. This allows a global audience to participate in the expression and learning of culture but that may come at a cost. Focusing on Japan, I want to dive into how culture is presenting within video games, why it is presented in such ways, and what that means for players' perception of the country through play.

Stuart Hall & Theory Of Representation In The Media: Exploring Get Out And Candyman, Lashanna Bryant
Capstone Showcase
Media representation has aided in creating a toxic manifestation of what it means to be Black in America. More specifically, the exploration of Black characters in horror films has opened many doors to hidden racism, discrimination, and oversimplification of their culture and their value in society. In looking into the films Candyman and Get Out there is a clear progression throughout the early 1990s to the mid 2010s that detail a very rapid change from taking a Black character from a background role to the main character.

Though choosing sources that have specific copyright that allows for the reuse, modification, and redistribution of pictures is an important lesson for all students of all grade levels, what’s even a more important lesson is that of the power of social media. The perfect picture can spread like a wildfire across all social media platforms. Pictures have the power to change someone’s mood, political opinion, and even advocate for change on the other side of the world.
Personifying Machinery, Zachary Wilson
Personifying Machinery, Zachary Wilson

The mindset of antebellum-era plantation owners in the southern United States was complex to say the least. Slavery became an integral part of not only southern society, but also the global economy due to British demand for raw materials in order to fuel their industrial revolution. What is important to understand, though, about this business model is that it is almost entirely based in acquiring more property (land and slaves) which are then managed together in order to produce profitable goods. It is the same concept shared by the owner of a factory who acquires more space for operations and …

Willowcreek Middle School in Portage Indiana is not your typical alternative school. We offer trauma informed practices in place of student expulsions. A safe structured environment, reduced class time, academic strategies, mindfulness, yoga, and community service, all help to provide the educational and social/emotional support necessary to help students at risk reach their potential and eventually transition back to the traditional classroom.
Encoding, Decoding, And The End Of Game Of Thrones, Kaitlin Jock
Encoding, Decoding, And The End Of Game Of Thrones, Kaitlin Jock
Capstone Showcase
Stuart Hall, a cultural theorist who helped develop what we understand as modern media theory, defined reception theory as a sort of reader response implying that all media texts are encoded and decoded with messages. A producer of a media text encodes a message which is meant to be decoded by the consumer. They might accept the message, negotiate their own reading, or completely reject it. After spending a decade as the biggest show in the world, Game of Thrones came to a close in 2019 and after months of anticipation leading up to a final season completely fell out …
The Black Narrative, Karmen Alexia Jones
The Black Narrative, Karmen Alexia Jones
Black Issues Conference
Through art and literature, we are able to create our own of narratives of any cultural experience. In this scenario, the African American experience can be exemplified through methods of reiterating or recreating. Artists can choose to reiterate or repeat a narrative that meets the status quo of stereotypes that have already been established through social, civil, economic traditions of teaching, or an artist can recreate and bring light to a new aspect to the complexity of the humanisation and emotional journeys of Black people.
The purpose of this discussion is to highlight the purposes within each selected work or …

Rural heritage represents the foundation of our past, which includes material and immaterial heritage. By studying rural heritage, we could better understand the past and integrate it into sustainable development of modern communities.
My presentation will be focussed on the example of villages with fortified churches from Transylvania, which are the most representative rural heritage of Romania, and includes series of villages, but just seven of them were inscribed in the World Heritage List – Prejmier-Tartlau, Biertan, Valea Viilor, Calnic, Saschiz-Keisd, Darju, and Viscri. I will discuss the role and impact of public participation in various preservation and development projects. …

Being the most sensitive person in my family was always a problem. My parents would constantly tell me I was exaggerating largely and making issues worse than they were, and I took this as a criticism every single time it was said. At 12 years old, I began to learn why they always told me not to exaggerate a circumstance. My grandmother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but nobody told me she was battling cancer until after her major surgery. When my dad was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma a year later, I truly understood what it meant to appreciate those …
