Nietzsches Wissenschaftsphilosophie - Vorrede, Babette Babich

Thirty years ago, a British rock band called The Who made a profound statement. Following the unexpected death of legendary drummer Keith Moon in 1980, Who guitarist and composer Pete Townshend entered a long period of mourning and reflection. Out of this epoch of uncertainty for the band emerged a musical gem, the likes of which never seen before or since. “Eminence Front”, the premiere single of the 1982 album It’s Hard, represents the insight gained from the intense feelings of loss associated with Moon’s demise. And, that knowledge bears enormous implications for the ways of the individual and for …

Necessity And Color Incompatibility, Brian Kierland

A traditional view is that all necessary truths are analytic. A frequent objection is that certain claims of color incompatibility – e.g., 'Nothing is both red and green all over' – are necessarily true but not analytic. I argue that this objection to the traditional view fails because such color incompatibility claims are either analytic or contingent.

Aristotelian Temporal Passage, Tony Roark
Aristotelian Temporal Passage, Tony Roark
Tony Roark
The central challenge for the temporal realist is providing a coherent analysis of temporal passage, the apparent 'flow' of time from earlier to later. I show here how the account of time Aristotle presents in Physics IV could serve as a basis for just such an analysis, for his view is immune to the standard stock of objections leveled by twentieth century philosophers. And although his account is itself subject to a damning objection, I believe that the troublemaking element might be supplanted by alternative views suited to fulfill the requisite theoretical role. I conclude that, subject to such revision, …

"This volume features a careful selection of major works in political and social philosophy from ancient times through to the present. Every reading has been painstakingly annotated, and each figure is given a substantial introduction highlighting his or her major contribution to the tradition. The anthology offers both depth and breadth in its selection of material by central figures, while also representing other currents of political thought. Thirty-two authors are represented, including fourteen from the 20th century. The editors have made every effort to include translations that are both readable and reliable." Building Democracy In Japan, Mary Alice Haddad
Building Democracy In Japan, Mary Alice Haddad
Mary Alice Haddad
How is democracy made real? How does an undemocratic country create new institutions and transform its polity such that democratic values and practices become integral parts of its political culture? These are some of the most pressing questions of our times, and they are the central inquiry of Building Democracy in Japan. Using the Japanese experience as starting point, this book develops a new approach to the study of democratization that examines state-society interactions as a country adjusts its existing political culture to accommodate new democratic values, institutions and practices. With reference to the country's history, the book focuses on …

The use of mobile devices is not for the kind of teacher who prefers to be the sage on the stage. Mobile devices allow the student to become a colleague in the content of the course, which results in higher engagement because they have a greater ownership in the content. This session will cover the use of mobile devices as a means to enhance student learning. Last semester I ran a proof of concept course where my Modern Philosophy students were all given iPads to use for the entire semester. In this session I will share my experience using mobile …
