When Simplifying Life Is Not So Bad: The Link Between Rigidity, Stressful Life Events, And Mental Health In An Undergraduate Population, Joseph Ciarrochi, Frank Deane, Terry Said

joseph Ciarrochi

Decades of research have generally shown that being more rigid is associated with poorer mental health. We investigated whether all aspects of what has been termed “rigidity” are harmful. In particular, we hypothesized that the desire for simple structure (DSS) will not be associated with poor mental health, and in some cases might be associated with better mental health. In contrast, the intolerance of uncertainty (IU) was hypothesized to be associated with a wide range of indices of poor mental health. We also hypothesized that people high in IU would be less resilient in the face of stressful life events. …

Under New Management: Whiteness In Post-Apartheid South African Life Writing, Antonio Simoes Da Silva

Tony Simoes da Silva

Alfred J. Lopez begins his introduction to postcolonial Whiteness: A Critical Reader on Race and Empire by stating "Whiteness is not, yet we continue for many reasons to act as though it is" (1). He is especially interested in "what happens to whiteness after empire," and proposes that it be understood as a dynamic relation of power. Despite the critical scrutiny it has attracted from whiteness studies, the racial category retains much of its ideological force. "The concept of whiteness as a cultural hegemon," Lopez argues, is manifest in "its lingering, if somewhat latent, hegemonic influence over much of the …

Nonorganic Life: Encounters Between Frequency And Virtuality In Antarctica, Su Ballard Dec 2012

Nonorganic Life: Encounters Between Frequency And Virtuality In Antarctica, Su Ballard

Su Ballard

This paper is not about Antarctica at all. In many imaginaries Antarctica exists as a virtualized yet real utopia. It is a place known through material productions that oscillate between the fictional and the scientific. The discovery of the Don Juan Pond lead scientists towards life formed by brine-derived nitrates (a kind of molecular self-organization by non-carbon sources) and onwards to the possibility of life on Mars. If it is autonomous, can reproduce and evolve, it must be life, mustn’t it? Amidst complex computational models, nonorganic matter is not static; it changes and tying it to either nature or culture …

How do we understand what it means to live on a planet? First, we might examine the qualities of a planet: spherical, rotating around an axis, revolving around a star (in the case of our Earth, the sun). Perceived according to these properties, it becomes clear that certain locations on the surface of this sphere are subject to different conditions of life. For example, due to the rotation of the Earth, most locations on its surface are subject to a 24-hour cycle of light and dark. However, two places, the axis points of the Earth's rotation, experience a vastly different …

Perinatal Phencyclidine Treatment Alters Neuregulin 1/Erbb4 Expression And Activation In Later Life, Teresa Du Bois, Kelly Newell, Xu-Feng Huang Sep 2012

Perinatal Phencyclidine Treatment Alters Neuregulin 1/Erbb4 Expression And Activation In Later Life, Teresa Du Bois, Kelly Newell, Xu-Feng Huang

Xu-Feng Huang

Schizophrenia is a complex and devastating mental disorder of unknown etiology. Hypofunction of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are implicated in the disorder, since phencyclidine (PCP) and other NMDA receptor antagonists mimic schizophrenia-like symptoms in humans and animals so well. Moreover, genetic linkage and post mortem studies strongly suggest a role for altered neuregulin 1 (Nrg1)/erbB4 signaling in schizophrenia pathology. This study investigated the relationship between the NMDA receptor and Nrg1 signaling pathways using the perinatal PCP animal model. Rats (n = 5/group) were treated with PCP (10 mg/kg) or saline on postnatal days (PN) 7, 9 and 11 and were sacrificed …
