Globalised Cartographies Of Being: Literature, Refugees And The Australian Nation, Antonio Simoes Da Silva Jul 2013

Globalised Cartographies Of Being: Literature, Refugees And The Australian Nation, Antonio Simoes Da Silva

Tony Simoes da Silva

This chapter considers the figure of the refugee as the displaced individual through the reading of a number of Australian literary works, which explore displacement 'as an extreme case of a more general modern condition - the powerlessness of the individual caught in the grip of vast collective purposes', to borrow Ian Watt's (1959: 218) comments on World War II prisoners of war. Through a critical reading of selected works aimed both at children and adult readers, I consider the role textual representation can play in creating a different understanding of the subject positions of the mass of individuals arriving …

The 'Intrusion Of Women Painters': Ethel Anderson, Modern Art And Gendered Modernities In Interwar Sydney, Australia, Jane Hunt Dec 2011

The 'Intrusion Of Women Painters': Ethel Anderson, Modern Art And Gendered Modernities In Interwar Sydney, Australia, Jane Hunt

Jane Hunt

In the interwar period in Sydney, Australia, male art gallery trustees, directors, and art schoolteachers objected to female advocacy and practice of artistic responsiveness to the modern. The dialogue between these two parties has often been interpreted in terms of a margin/centre dichotomy. Closer examination of the case of Ethel Anderson suggests that this model is inadequate. She demonstrated the transnationally apparent predilection of women to infusing civic cultures with the fleeting and every day, thus inverting the spatial cues to cultural authority and presenting a gendered challenge to institutionalised, masculine notions of cultural authority.

Sejong Park's 'Birthday Boy' And Korean-Australian Encounters, Ben Goldsmith, Brian Yecies Nov 2011

Sejong Park's 'Birthday Boy' And Korean-Australian Encounters, Ben Goldsmith, Brian Yecies

Brian Yecies

This chapter focuses on some of the flows of film work between Australia and South Korea, and some of the roles taken by Australians in the performance (and particularly the sound) of Koreanness in different film contexts. We will explore Korean-Australian collaboration on film, through case studies of Sejong Park's Oscar-nominated short animated film Birthday Boy (2004) and two Korean feature films Musa (2001, Kim Sung-su Kim) and Shadowless Sword (2005, Kim Young-jun Kim) for which Australian firms provided sound post-production services. We are interested in how these films instanciate and expand Korean, Australian, diasporic and transnational filmmaking.

‘This Story Does Not Begin On A Boat’: What Is Australian About Asian Australian Writing?, Wenche Ommundsen Nov 2011

‘This Story Does Not Begin On A Boat’: What Is Australian About Asian Australian Writing?, Wenche Ommundsen

Wenche Ommundsen

With reference to recent debates about the politics of representation, this paper argues that a profound ambivalence about identity, and particularly about Asian Australian identity, is a common characteristic that marks this writing as specifically Australian. Tracing cultural contexts from the 'pathologies' of Australian multicultural debates to other transnational literary traditions, the paper issues examples from the writing of Brain Castro, Alice Pung, Ouyang Yu, Nam Le, Shaun Tan, and Tom Cho to speculate on the emergence of a new and distinct phase of transnational writing in Australia.
