The Worldmakers: Global Imagining In Early Modern Europe, Ayesha Ramachandran Dec 2014

The Worldmakers: Global Imagining In Early Modern Europe, Ayesha Ramachandran

Ayesha Ramachandran

In this beautifully conceived book, Ayesha Ramachandran reconstructs the imaginative struggles of early modern artists, philosophers, and writers to make sense of something that we take for granted: the world, imagined as a whole. Once a new, exciting, and frightening concept, “the world” was transformed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. But how could one envision something that no one had ever seen in its totality? The Worldmakers moves beyond histories of globalization to explore how “the world” itself—variously understood as an object of inquiry, a comprehensive category, and a system of order—was self-consciously shaped by human agents. Gathering an …

Le (NéO)Colonialisme LittéRaire : Quatre Romans Africains Face À L'Institution LittéRaire Parisienne (1950-1970), Vivan Steemers

Vivan Steemers

Broken Glass Or Broken Text?: The Translatability Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé (2005) Into English, Vivan Steemers Dec 2013

Broken Glass Or Broken Text?: The Translatability Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé (2005) Into English, Vivan Steemers

Vivan Steemers

Verre Cassé, Alain Mabanckou’s fifth novel, awarded several “Franco-French” literary prizes, launched the author’s breakthrough as a “francophone”/French writer. This essay opens with a description of Mabanckou’s ascension to the global pantheon of postcolonial writers, as Verre Cassé was included among the 3% of all literature translated into English. A primary challenge for Helen Stevenson, the translator of the novel, were the approximately three hundred predominantly literary references that were incorporated in the source text. Approximately half of these intertexts from African, French, and world literature are lost in the translation. Referring to the two different regimes of reading as …

The Effect Of Translating “Big Words”: Anglophone Translation And Reception Of Ahmadou Kourouma’S Novel Allah N’Est Pas Obligé, Vivan Steemers Dec 2011

The Effect Of Translating “Big Words”: Anglophone Translation And Reception Of Ahmadou Kourouma’S Novel Allah N’Est Pas Obligé, Vivan Steemers

Vivan Steemers

The inter-European language translator of post-independence African novels often faces considerably more challenges than the average literary translator. Many Anglophone and Francophone African novelists attempt to “decolonize” the colonial discourse, by resorting to a “subverted” version of the Europhone language: they tailor it to African reality and base it on the syntax, the lexicon, and the rhythm of their indigenous language. The translator of these texts tends to “normalize” the linguistic innovations of the source text, thus creating a smoother reading experience for the target audience. This paper examines Frank Wynne’s translation into English of Allah n’est pas obligé, and …
