Monotheism And Tolerance: Recovering A Religion Of Reason, Robert Erlewine Dec 2009

Monotheism And Tolerance: Recovering A Religion Of Reason, Robert Erlewine

Robert Erlewine

Why are religious tolerance and pluralism so difficult to achieve? Why is the often violent fundamentalist backlash against them so potent? Robert Erlewine looks to a new religion of reason for answers to these questions. Drawing on Enlightenment writers Moses Mendelssohn, Immanuel Kant, and Hermann Cohen, who placed Christianity and Judaism in tension with tolerance and pluralism, Erlewine finds a way to break the impasse, soften hostilities, and establish equal relationships with the Other. Erlewine's recovery of a religion of reason stands in contrast both to secularist critics of religion who reject religion for the sake of reason and to …

Twitflick: Visualizing The Rhythm And Narrative Of Micro-Blogging Activity, Alberto Pepe, Sasank Reddy, Lilly Nguyen, Mark Hansen

Alberto Pepe

Micro-blogging is a form of online communication by which users broadcast brief text updates, or tweets. This article explores the temporal component of micro-blogging activity by emphasizing its narrative nature: an individual tweet is an expression of personal online presence at a given time, yet it necessarily embodies the context of a broader developing story. We present Twitflick, a digital media platform that blends a continuous stream of real-time text updates from Twitter with related user-uploaded images hosted on Flickr. Twitflick acts as a space in which distributed, temporally-authentic personal narratives, in the form of photographs and text, reinforce, extend, …

Motivational Factors And Persistence In Learning Japanese As A Foreign Language, Masanori Matsumoto, Yasuko Obana Nov 2009

Motivational Factors And Persistence In Learning Japanese As A Foreign Language, Masanori Matsumoto, Yasuko Obana

Masanori Matsumoto

Extract:

This paper aims to discuss correlation of motivation with learning Japanese as a foreign language (JFL). It will investigate what features borne from the learning process are key factors that motivate learners to continue, and whether or not motivational features differ between continuing and discontinuing students, and at different proficiency levels. Motivation is one of the most important prerequisites for learning. It is often compared to the engine (intensity) and steering wheel (direction) of a car (Gage and Berliner, 1984). Hilgard et al. (1979) state that motivation is concerned with those factors which energise behaviour and give it direction. …

Alain Badiou: The Event Of Becoming A Political Subject, Antonio Calcagno Nov 2009

Alain Badiou: The Event Of Becoming A Political Subject, Antonio Calcagno

Antonio Calcagno

One of the more poignant claims Badiou makes is that the subject develops an understanding of itself as a political subject only by executing decisive political actions or making decisive political interventions. In this article I will argue that in order to have a fuller philosophical conception of political subjectivity, and therefore political agency, one must also hold that, first, political interventions do not necessarily lead to a definition or a further way of referring to and understanding the subject. In fact, political events and interventions may consciously aim at and result in the de-politicizing, de-subjectivating or dehumanizing of the …

Technofetishism And The Uncanny Desires Of Asfr (Alt. Sex. Fetish. Robots), Allison De Fren Oct 2009

Technofetishism And The Uncanny Desires Of Asfr (Alt. Sex. Fetish. Robots), Allison De Fren

Allison De Fren

This essay interrogates the visual landscape of technofetishism, particularly in relation to the machine woman, using as a springboard a little-known internet community of technosexuals who collectively refer to their fetish for artificial bodies as A.S.F.R. (alt.sex.fetish.robots). Although A.S.F.R. was made possible by the advent of virtual communities, its fetishistic interests have historical antecedents that were documented in the early literature of sexology. Against their classifications of similar fetishistic practices as variations of necrophilia, as well as subsequent Freudian interpretations of fetishism as grounded in castration anxiety, this essay argues that A.S.F.R. is less about technology in general, or the …

'As You Like It', Boise State University, Gordon Reinhart Oct 2009

'As You Like It', Boise State University, Gordon Reinhart

Gordon Reinhart

Both Shakespeare's As You Like It and the story of the American Revolution are set in times of uncertainty in which drastic measures are needed to ensure safety and freedom from oppression. Both Shakespeare and the founding fathers knew what it was like to witness conflict rising around them. The American Revolution and the Catholic/Protestant conflict during Shakespeare’s time were periods of persecution, during which brothers were divided and banishment tore families apart. When you consider the fact that Shakespeare’s writing of this play and the American Revolution are only separated by around 175 years, it is not hard to …

Inside, Outside And Upside Down, Felicity Mcgregor

It is said that Abdul Kassem Ismael, the scholarly Grand Vizier of Persia in the tenth century had a library of 117,000 volumes. He was an avid reader and a lover of books. On his many travels, he could not bear to part with this beloved books. Wherever he went they were carried about by 400 camels trained to walk in alphabetical order. His camel drivers thus became librarians who could put their hands instantly on any book for which their master asked. (Hawkins, Brian L and Battin, Patricia (2000) Camel Drivers and Gatecrashers, Educause Review May/June 2000 p50). How …

Building Utopia: Performance And The Fantasy Of Urban Renewal In Contemporary Toronto, Laura Levin, Kim Solga Sep 2009

Building Utopia: Performance And The Fantasy Of Urban Renewal In Contemporary Toronto, Laura Levin, Kim Solga

Kim Solga

Toronto markets itself as a city in renewal, a “creative city” of the future full of arts and culture. Alongside the official pitch, a number of street-level underground initiatives reimagine Toronto's utopic future in a different way by means of site-specific performances. But do these grassroots performance schemes necessarily create a more inclusive, more equitable city?

Exploring The Placelessness Of Reading Among Older Teens In A Canadian Rural Municipality, Paulette Rothbauer Sep 2009

Exploring The Placelessness Of Reading Among Older Teens In A Canadian Rural Municipality, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

Situated in a review of rural, cultural, and youth geographies, this article reports on a qualitative study of the role of reading and libraries in the lives of older rural teenagers. The primary method of data collection was the use of in-depth, flexibly structured interviews with twenty-seven youth between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years, supplemented with data from unobtrusive observation and environmental scanning in a specific geographic locale. Four themes are discussed: the habitual, quotidian reading of teenagers; the shifting visibility of the public library; the Internet and the World Wide Web as a default reading site; and …
