The Social Contract And Feminism, Grace A. Albertson
The Social Contract And Feminism, Grace A. Albertson
Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024
This paper seeks to prove the value placed on women in society, and disprove the claim that the social contract is inherently patriarchal. Radical feminists claim that society as a whole is irreparably flawed and operates patriarchally. Therefore, they call for a systematic shift and condemn the current fabric of our society and nation. The social contract, an idea centered around the philosophical works of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes served as the primary way that the founders of the United States justified the formation of American democracy and had immense influence on American political thought. However, feminists seek to …

Burdin, Johannah, Samantha Rouillard
Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection
Johannah Burdin shares her story as a lesbian/queer woman experiencing southern Maine in the 1990s. Her story touches on topics involving coming out, relationships, a traumatic incident that left her disabled, activism, and much more. She was active in her youth in spreading awareness on the AIDS/HIV crisis, education on safe sex, and spent her evenings at popular Portland gay bars, like Sister’s Bar and Limelight/The Underground. Although she is not much into drinking, she recognized these were some of the few spots queer people could go to make community and relationships. Johannah also shares her story of becoming a …
The Revival Of The Handmaid’S Tale: Empowering Women’S Rights In The Twenty-First Century, Bassmah B. Altaher
The Revival Of The Handmaid’S Tale: Empowering Women’S Rights In The Twenty-First Century, Bassmah B. Altaher
Journal of International Women's Studies
Feminists fought for the sake of justice and equality, paving the way for so many women to believe in their inner strength and ability to create change, but with the turn of the twenty-first century, many women who are victims of rape and sexual harassment still prefer to remain silent. The only possible way to move on and heal is to seek one’s truth, yet the voices of the victims are overlooked in the face of extreme oppressive patriarchal societies. The entertainment industry and social media are two powerful tools women can use to make their voices heard, and celebrities …

Inequality Analyses Of Gendering Jordanian Citizenship And Legislative Rights, Rania F. Al-Rabadi, Anas N. Al-Rabadi
Inequality Analyses Of Gendering Jordanian Citizenship And Legislative Rights, Rania F. Al-Rabadi, Anas N. Al-Rabadi
Journal of International Women's Studies
Awareness has been recently increased about gender-based rights and citizenship in Jordan. Many of the issues concerning gender equality arise in the private sphere. Therefore, focusing on the politics of family law is important with regards to women’s rights in particular. Family law is the law related to matters such as polygamy, divorce, inheritance, child custody, guardianship and obedience. The effects are observed especially when Jordanian women try to exercise their granted constitutional political rights. It is the family (personal status) law that runs individual affairs within the private sphere in a patriarchal society where it affects also on exercising …

Multi-Architecture In Saudi Arabia: Representing The History Of Women, Salwa Nugali
Journal of International Women's Studies
The purpose of this research project is to put into context the role of women in Saudi Arabia through reading of symbols and signs of the physical shape of the first sky scrapers: AlMamlakah (Kingdom) and AlFaisalia. The paper analyses perceptions of modern Saudi Arabian architecture and the significance of our visual perception to gender codification is what this project attempts to analyze. The project uses three interlaced lines of investigation. The first is the relationship of architecture to the culture and the population. The research paper will study the architecture of the two skyscrapers. The second line of investigation …

Security Through Solidarity: Honduran Women’S Post-Coup Strategies Of Support And Survival, Christine Gervais, Betsy Estevez
Journal of International Women's Studies
As a follow up to the article “From Discovery to Dissidence: Honduran Women’s Conceptions and Claims of Human Rights,” published in this journal in May 2010 (Vol. 11, #4), this paper examines forty-eight Honduran women’s experiences of state-based insecurity and feminist-based solidarity following the June 2009 coup d’État. The authors reflect on the ethical implications of the participant-centered and solidarity-oriented qualitative methodological approaches constrained by state repression. The women’s testimonies shed light on the potential of a solidarity-security symbiosis.
