The Awkward Academic: Why Judith Reads James In Joyce Carol Oates's "My Warszawa: 1980", Kerry Sutherland
Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies
Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “My Warszawa: 1980” follows the journey of well-respected academician Judith Horne as she travels to and within Poland to participate in an international conference on American culture. She has a vague connection to Poland, with remote family members who were killed in Auschwitz and a Jewish ancestry that can be seen in her features, but she considers these facts unimportant to who she is at the moment. She travels with her lover, who is as remote emotionally as her dead forbears are physically. The emotional connections she makes with the people and land begin to …

The Legal Framework Of Contracting: Gender Equality, The Provision Of Services, And European Public Procurement Law, E.K. Sarter
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The article examines the legal framework of public contracting in the EU. It argues that while European public procurement law explicitly allows for measures to foster gender equality be taken into account in public tendering, European legislation and jurisdiction also impose limits to the range of these measures.
Rhetorical Strategies Of Visual Pleasure In Situation Comedies: 'Friends' And Female Body Image, Deanna Sellnow, Jonna Reule Ziniel
Rhetorical Strategies Of Visual Pleasure In Situation Comedies: 'Friends' And Female Body Image, Deanna Sellnow, Jonna Reule Ziniel
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
The visual messages conveyed by and about the female characters on Friends reinforce hegemonic ideals of femininity and an ideal female body image that is excessively thin. Messages of narcissism, voyeurism, and fetishism draw adolescent female viewers to identify with the images, characteristics, and behaviors of Rachel and Monica as models and to distance themselves from the images, characteristics, and behaviors of Phoebe and “Fat Monica” as anti-models. The messages sometimes overtly and often covertly perpetuate hegemonic stereotypes about women. Messages advocate that the ideal female body image is a sex object, and the most desirable sex objects are excessively …

Female Artists And The Spanish Pavilion In The International Exhibition In 1937, Carmen Gaitán Salinas
Female Artists And The Spanish Pavilion In The International Exhibition In 1937, Carmen Gaitán Salinas
Dissidences
This article aims to elucidate why the majority of Spanish female artists did not participate in the Spanish Pavilion of the International Exhibition in 1937. Only two of them took part in this event. However, there were a lot of female artists in that period. In fact, some artists had a promising career, but it seems that they did not dare to be involved in this exhibition in the Spanish Pavilion. In some cases, the no participation of some female artists could have been a simple coincidence, although it should be pointed out that there could be other reasons related …

Female Gubernatorial Candidates In Purple States: A Case Study Of New Mexico And Arizona, Brittany Klug
Female Gubernatorial Candidates In Purple States: A Case Study Of New Mexico And Arizona, Brittany Klug
Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)
This research serves to determine how the political ideology of Republican female candidates, in conjunction with political and cultural factors, affects the outcome of gubernatorial elections. An analysis of two 2010 gubernatorial races, taking place in New Mexico and Arizona, will use a case study approach to test the hypothesis that no single aspect of a candidate will ultimately decide the outcome of an election. This paper will also use an alternative ideol- ogy score to compare candidates, in addition to examining the history of female politicians. The findings support the hypothesis that one factor does not unilaterally determine an …
Reproductive Rights In Latin America: A Case Study Of Guatemala And Nicaragua, Katherine W. Bogen
Reproductive Rights In Latin America: A Case Study Of Guatemala And Nicaragua, Katherine W. Bogen
Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)
A lack of access to contraceptives and legal abortion for women throughout the nations of Nicaragua and Guatemala creates critical health care problems. Moreover, rural and underprivileged women in Guatemala and Nicaragua are facing greater limitations to birth control access, demonstrating a classist aspect in the global struggle for female reproductive rights. Although some efforts have been made over the past half-century to initiate a dialogue on the failure of medical care in these nations to adequately address issues of maternal mortality and reproductive rights, the women's reproductive health movements of Nicaragua and Guatemala have struggled to reach an effective …

Sobre Género Y Trayectorias De Transformación Social En Amor, Curiosidad, Prozac Y Dudas (1997) Y La Eva Futura (2000) De Lucía Etxebarria, Javier Sánchez Dr.
Dissidences

Narrating Wartime Rapes And Trauma In A Woman In Berlin, Agatha Schwartz
Narrating Wartime Rapes And Trauma In A Woman In Berlin, Agatha Schwartz
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Narrating Wartime Rapes and Trauma in A Woman in Berlin" Agatha Schwartz examines the reception of the controversial wartime diary published anonymously first in 1954 in English translation. The book is a narrative representation of the mass rapes committed by Red Army soldiers during the siege of Berlin in 1945. Schwartz argues that A Woman in Berlin's portrayal of the rapes and the rapists, although not unbiased, leaves room for the initiation of the healing of trauma and forgiveness. Schwartz reflects on how life writing, particularly by women about a difficult chapter of German history …

En-Gendering Memory Through Holocaust Alimentary Life Writing, Louise O. Vasvári
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "En-gendering Memory through Holocaust Alimentary Life Writing" Louise O. Vasvári aims to underline the cultural and gendered significance of the sharing of recipes as a survival tool by starving women in concentration camps during the Holocaust and the continuing role of food memories in the writing of Holocaust survivor women she considers a genealogy of intergenerational remembrance and transmission into the postmemory writing of their second generation daughters and occasionally their sons. Vasvári argues that the study of multigenerational Holocaust alimentary life writing becomes important today because as direct survivors of the Holocaust disappear there is a …

Women's Rights Movements In The 'Arab Spring': Major Victories Or Failures For Human Rights?, Hayat Alvi
Journal of International Women's Studies
With the 2011 “Arab Spring”, the issue of women’s empowerment has emerged as a parallel movement in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). What are the implications of the women’s empowerment movements in the MENA for improved political representation and rights? Do these developments contribute to long-term socio-political, legal, judicial, and economic reforms that would improve overall human rights, and especially women’s rights in the MENA? This paper is a comparative survey of women’s empowerment and rights, especially in terms of general human rights principles, as well as in terms of political representation in post-revolution Tunisia and Egypt. The …

Issues In Women's Liberation Struggles In Contemporary Nigeria: A Study Of Ezeigbo's Hands That Crush Stone (2010), Osita C. Ezenwanebe
Issues In Women's Liberation Struggles In Contemporary Nigeria: A Study Of Ezeigbo's Hands That Crush Stone (2010), Osita C. Ezenwanebe
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper evaluates some contentious issues in women’s liberation struggles in Nigeria as recreated in Ezeigbo’s play, Hands that Crush Stone. The particularities of gender are neglected in the anti-colonial struggle for Nigerian independence, and women’s issues are subsumed within the nationalist literatures of cultural regeneration. With the influence of feminism, many Nigerian women embark on the identification of women’s personhood by controverting the representations of Nigerian women in male-centered works. African theatre, in particular, is very skeptical about the feminist ideology aimed at changing the status of women in society. Similarly, many people are suspicious of women’s liberation struggle …
Gender Parity In Media Coverage Of Athletes Wıth Disabilities In Turkey, Nalan R. Ayvazoglu
Gender Parity In Media Coverage Of Athletes Wıth Disabilities In Turkey, Nalan R. Ayvazoglu
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study examines the portrayal of female athletes with disabilities in a Turkish daily sports newspaper. A content analysis was conducted on 486 articles published in a popular sports newspaper between the years of 2007 and 2011. Female athletes with disabilities had less media coverage than male athletes with disabilities in Turkish sports media. While male athletes with disabilities were depicted more in team sports, female athletes were depicted mostly in individual sports. However, the individual sports female athletes participated in this study were sports that are considered ‘masculine’. Female athletes with disabilities were depicted as passive in most of …
