Report of the Naming & Symbols Task Force concerning four major areas:

  • Solicit input and perspectives from a broad range of constituencies and stakeholders that will guide us as we examine the origins of the names and symbols used on campus.
  • Audit the names used on buildings and other campus symbols to determine which may be connected to exclusion, segregation, racism or slavery.
  • Create a set of guiding principles and a range of options for how we should address any issues raised.
  • Provide to University leadership a set of recommendations.

Letter, 11 June 1952, to WKU faculty member Frances Richards from artist and alumna Dorothy Grider, New York City, regarding a plan for Grider to render a painting of WKU’s Student Union Building (later the Paul Garrett Student Center). She expresses concern over her distance from the subject and asks for some photographs from the publicity department in order to make preliminary sketches.

Cochran with warm thanks to Richards for her assistance in its preparation; and remarks on libel and freedom of expression given by Bert J. Borrone at the 1968 Herald Awards Dinner, with accompanying letter by Cochran.

This is a list of collections in the Manuscripts & Folklife Archives holdings of WKU’s Department of Library Special Collections that relate to World War I. Included are letters and diaries of soldiers and civilians, military records and papers, research projects, photographs, scrapbooks and other, mostly unpublished material. Our collections are particularly strong in documenting the experiences of Kentuckians at home and overseas, and of others who found themselves in Kentucky (most notably, at Camp Zachary Taylor, the Army training facility in Louisville) during the war and its immediate aftermath.

Recording of a presentation made by Mary Julia Neal titled “Reflections of a Former Director” in which Neal discusses her role as the Director of the Kentucky Building from 1964 to 1972. She discusses the condition of the building and collections when she came and some of the collections she helped acquire. This presentation was part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Kentucky Building, which opened in 1939. Kentucky Museum Education Curator Dianne Watkins provides an introduction.
