Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi
Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi
Playwriting (MFA) Theses
Girls’ Studies is a relatively new academic field characterized by its focus on the complexity of girlhood experiences and understanding girl as a unique social identity separate from the notion of future women. In bringing Girls' Studies theory into the work of theatre scholarship and new play development, I present a framework for the interdisciplinary field of Girls' Theatre Studies. Chapter One is an exploration of girlhood presentations in contemporary theatre through a postfeminist lens. Examining the theatrical manifestations of the "female victim-hero” in contemporary presentations of girlhood, I argue that girl audiences are able to feel with and through …

Learning To Let Go: Becoming A More Collaborative And Compassionate Director, Catherine Joy Thomas
Learning To Let Go: Becoming A More Collaborative And Compassionate Director, Catherine Joy Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines all the directorial projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on throughout my time at UofSC, both as an assistant and as a director. Because I am completing my MFA without the mentor I originally started this journey with, my path has not been linear but, instead, a series of stepping stones in all shapes and sizes, guided by different directors and unofficial mentors who have various styles and approaches to theatre. These projects have molded my directorial approach in different ways, and I have become a better collaborator and leader because of them. This thesis examines …
Re-Imagining Rehearsals: A Survey Of Improvisational Principles And Practices That Foster Ethical Caring, Michael Mcnamara
Re-Imagining Rehearsals: A Survey Of Improvisational Principles And Practices That Foster Ethical Caring, Michael Mcnamara
Honors Program Theses
Theatre has the potential to champion important ideas and compel audiences to reject mistreatment or injustice. Unfortunately, the history of theatre illustrates an industry that has struggled to embody the values it espouses onstage in its offstage practices. While theatre brings together all types of artists from a diversity of backgrounds, it sometimes fails to guarantee those artists a healthy space to collaborate within. Specifically, I analyze the relationship between a director and their actors during the rehearsal process, and how the power disparity of that relationship has led to actors’ safety being disregarded, their boundaries being violated, and their …

Staging A Metaphor: Transplant As A Relationship In Lauren Gunderson's I And You, Georgia Su Ga
Staging A Metaphor: Transplant As A Relationship In Lauren Gunderson's I And You, Georgia Su Ga
Honors College Theses
First time directing offers many lessons to be learned. No two directors will learn the exact same things. For the sake of diversity of perspective, this is a positive thing. Directors are meant to be different from one another. It is necessary and eye opening to see one play presented in several different ways. While every directing process, vision, and final product varies from person to person, we can learn a thing or two from our fellow directors and gain inspiration.
Directing, especially for those just starting out, is an experiment for their methods, organization skills, rehearsal routines, collaborations with …

Directing With A Historical Perspective For The Current World, John Reynolds Jr.
Directing With A Historical Perspective For The Current World, John Reynolds Jr.
Senior Theses
This paper charts the path of directing This Is Our Youth by Kenneth Lonergan, which ran from March 24-27. It will explore using the history of the play's setting, New York City in 1982, to keep the production relevant for today's audiences. It also details casting, collaboration with designers, and the rehearsal process. I also give a summary of feedback about keeping the overall environment positive. This experience showed that by leaning into the specific time of the play, the themes resonated strongly with the audiences. A positive environment was also essential to the success of the production.
Silent And Accessible Theatre, Nicole Line
Silent And Accessible Theatre, Nicole Line
Honors Projects
Silent and Deaf accessible theatre challenges the stereotypes many people have of theatre and introduces audiences to new perceptions of the artform. When it comes to theatre, one often thinks of long, multi-act plays with lots of spoken dialogue. While this is the most common style of theatrical performance, there is more to theatre than staged language. When deciding my project’s concept this past year, I brainstormed many different ways to include all areas of my studies here at BGSU including theatre, dance, and American Sign Language (ASL). I am very passionate about these aspects and wanted my project to …

These plays all bring forth hauntings, despite and in some cases because of their differences in content and style—ranging from realism to the avant-garde. I base my discussion …

"Taming Of The Shrew(S)": Explorations Of Gender And Power In Directing An Original Adaptation Of William Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew, Katharine Cognard-Black
Honors Theses
In Fall 2021, I directed my own adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, entitled “Taming of the Shrew(s).” This project served as both the creative portion of my honors thesis as well as a Senior Showcase within the Bucknell Department of Theatre & Dance. From a young age, I have been fascinated by the malleability of Shakespeare’s plays, and having acted in and seen multiple productions of The Taming of the Shrew, my project began with a desire to take on the gendered complexities of this so-called “problem play.” The Taming of the Shrew is problematic in its sexist …

Greek Tragedy At Marion Correctional: An Exploration Of Directing Theatre In Prison, Elise G. Woods
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
In this project, I describe and analyze forces of freedom and coercion through the process of directing Trojan Women by Euripides at Marion Correctional Institution. This analysis documents each stage of the theatrical process—from project proposal to final performance and discussion—through ethnographic, arts-based research using personal observations, primary accounts from performers and audience members, and secondary sources. By exploring the experience of directing Trojan Women in the prison setting, I analyze forces of coercion and freedom in both theatre-making practices and prison. As a result, I assert the uniquely positive aspects and productive utilization's of coercion through theatre in a …

We all met with the designers for the show’s …
Building My Director’S Toolbox: For Scab And Beyond, Rebecca Whitney Klein
Building My Director’S Toolbox: For Scab And Beyond, Rebecca Whitney Klein
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The research question forming the basis of this project was “What can I learn about directing and who I am as a director by researching the processes of others and applying aspects of them to a production of Sheila Callaghan’s Scab?” For my research, I first learned as much as possible about the processes of several professional directors, by means of personal interviews and secondary research. I selected directors who I had worked with previously and wished to learn more from, whose methods I believed would be useful as I directed a production of Scab, and/or on whose methods …

This doctoral study explores three American post-combat reintegration plays written and produced in 2010 and 2011 in the United States.
