This thesis applies nationalism theories from Eric Hobsbawm's Inventing Tradition and Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities to show how Agrippina Vaganova and Choi Seung-hee's dances became their nation's representative dance forms. Agrippina Vaganova's Modern Russian Ballet and Choi Seung-hee's Sinmuyong (New Dance) made significant impacts in their respective countries in the twentieth century by each becoming a systematic dance form that became synonymous with the nation. This thesis argues that Agrippina Vaganova's Modern Russian Ballet and Choi Seung-hee's Sinmuyong (New Dance) became their nation's representative dance forms due to interactions between performance, social changes, and discourses of media. Before Crenshaw: A Historiographical Look At Intersectional Identity In Three Twentieth-Century American Plays By Eaton, Grimké, And Treadwell, Emily Goodell

This thesis anachronistically applies Kimberlé Crenshaw’s term intersectionality to three dramatic texts using Thomas Postlewait’s model of theatre historiography. These plays were authored by twentieth century female playwrights who had similar intersectional lives as the leads discussed. Yuki, from the 1901 novel turned 1903 Broadway play A Japanese Nightingale, was crafted by Winnifred Eaton. Yuki’s identity will be the subject of the first chapter. The second chapter examines the identity of Rachel from Angelina Weld Grimke’s anti-lynching play Rachel. Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, and John Dryden presented the character of Cleopatra differently, through both the written language of their pieces and their own and others’ performances of her, in order to meet the demands of their respective audiences and performance conditions. Chaucer, in “The Legend of Cleopatra,” portrays and performs Cleopatra comically. Shakespeare, in his Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra, characterizes Cleopatra as a complex woman. In All for Love; or, The World Well Lost, Dryden characterizes Cleopatra as sentimental, but the performance of her on stage by female actresses added depth to the role. For Chaucer and Dryden, …

This dissertation analyzes Pakistani and Indian plays that illustrate the nexus of power relations that operate in Pakistan and India to disempower women and the way women resist by creating dialogic spaces or fissures in the exploitative system. I have selected plays by Ajoka Theater in Pakistan and plays dealing with the similar thematic concerns by notable Indian playwrights to explore common grounds and points of departure. I have chosen four images of women depicting diverse modes of oppression associated with women’s bodies that are dealt with in these plays.

This dissertation sets out to examine the finales of Robert Schumann's Piano Sonatas (opp. 11, 14, 22 [original finale]), and Fantasie (op. 17), with an especial focus on their form, which can be broadly categorized as parallel form. The introduction examines historical criticisms of Schumann's large-scale works, pointing out some of the idiosyncratic features found in Schumann's finales. Each chapter will present a comprehensive analysis of one of the finales. First, there is an explanation of four different types of generation gaps that are discovered throughout the first play of examination, Fiddler on the Roof.
