Bachelor Petruchio’s search for a wife finds an unwilling participant in Kate and hilarity ensues as he sets out to ‘tame’ his headstrong wife. The play has been set in the 1950s and abridged to fit a shorter time, but has not been adapted, staying true to Shakespeare’s classic. The romantic comedy has themes of mistaken identity, role reversal, difficult choices, and, especially, being surprised by love. It will be a fun, high-energy show that includes a live, 6-person acapella group singing ‘50s’ classics, such as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, creating a light-hearted atmosphere for the event.

[Introduction To] Religion Around Shakespeare, Peter Iver Kaufman Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Religion Around Shakespeare, Peter Iver Kaufman

Bookshelf

For years scholars and others have been trying to out Shakespeare as an ardent Calvinist, a crypto-Catholic, a Puritan-baiter, a secularist, or a devotee of some hybrid faith. In Religion Around Shakespeare, Peter Kaufman sets aside such speculation in favor of considering the historical and religious context surrounding his work. Employing extensive archival research, he aims to assist literary historians who probe the religious discourses, characters, and events that seem to have found places in Shakespeare’s plays and to aid general readers or playgoers developing an interest in the plays’ and playwright’s religious contexts: Catholic, conformist, and reformist. Kaufman …

In this comedy about justice, the Duke of Vienna attempts to strengthen the laws that govern sexual conduct in his city. A straight moralistic tale, it would seem, until the man charged with cleaning up the city falls for the beautiful Isabella, who is pleading for the life of her brother, the first man to be sentenced to death for 'illicit sex' under the new laws. Shakespeare uses love, lust and sexual behaviour among Viennese society to demonstrate that no one is immune to the rules they must enforce. The play's title, Measure for Measure is taken from the Sermon …

'Rather Say I Play The Man I Am': Shakespeare's Coriolanus And Elizabethan Anti-Theatricality, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2000

'Rather Say I Play The Man I Am': Shakespeare's Coriolanus And Elizabethan Anti-Theatricality, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

In the second act of Shakespeare's Coriolanus, the hero is informed that his acceptance as a Roman consul is dependent upon donning the robe of humility and petitioning the common people in the market-place for their ratifying vote. Coriolanus recoils from the custom, outraged at the idea of acting a part—complete with costume, dialogue, and stage directions— that does not correspond with his inner truth. At this moment and others, Coriolanus echoes the anti-theatricalist rhetoric of Elizabethan pamphleteers like the popular and prolific Stephen Gosson. In many ways, Coriolanus serves as a stand-in for the anti-theatrical ideology of Gosson and …
