Ships In Houston, Nadia Villafuerte, Julie Ann Ward
Ships In Houston, Nadia Villafuerte, Julie Ann Ward
Undiscovered Americas
Ships in Houston by Nadia Villafuerte, translated by Julie Ann Ward, is a harrowing and heartrending collection of fifteen stories that bring to life characters who, though they exist independently from one another, inhabit the same world: Mexico’s southern border. Using acute attention to language, such as various dialects and slang, to create a nuanced and varied mood and setting, Villafuerte’s stories track exotic dancers, sex workers, truck drivers, drug dealers, immigration officials, and even a mayor’s daughter to create compelling fictions rooted in the harsh realities of borderlands that many choose to overlook. While the US’s southern border with …

Literatura Y Legitimación En América Latina. Polémicas, Operaciones, Representaciones, Guadalupe Silva, Magdalena Cámpora, Gerardo Pignatiello
Monographs and Open Access Books

Chile, En Particular, Lilianet Brintrup Hertling
Fiction and Poetry

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Las ciudades del deseo explores the representations of gender, sexuality, and urban space in contemporary narratives from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. By examining a corpus of novels published since 2000, this book shows how the changes in urban landscape create a new image of the city that destroys traditional gender roles and produces different discourses on sexuality. At moments of crisis in political agendas that took place between 1990 and 2000, queer subjects became spokespeople outlining new national projects on each island, while claiming space in the national imaginary. The nation is no longer built on blood …
Song Of Exile: A Cultural History Of Brazil’S Most Popular Poem, 1846–2018, Joshua Alma Enslen
Song Of Exile: A Cultural History Of Brazil’S Most Popular Poem, 1846–2018, Joshua Alma Enslen
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Song of Exile: A Cultural History of Brazil’s Most Popular Poem, 1846–2018 is the first comprehensive study of the influence of Antônio Gonçalves Dias’s “Canção do exílio.” Written in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1843 by a homesick student longing for Brazil, “Song of Exile” has inspired thousands of parodies and pastiches, and new variations continue to appear to this day. Every generation of Brazilian writers has adapted the poem’s Romantic verses to glorify the wonders of the nation or to criticize it via parody, exposing a litany of issues that have plagued the country’s progress over the years. Based on a …

Transformations: Presentation Slides
The purpose of this evaluative case study is to determine how students from a 4-year medium-sized college in the northeast US who participated in a short-term study abroad program in Cuernavaca, Mexico perceived their experience as worthwhile in their education. This research seeks to answer the following questions: 1) How does short-term study abroad impact students’ perceived level of Spanish language proficiency?; 2) What are students’ thoughts about short-term study abroad with respect to their learning beyond their Spanish language development (e.g., financial investment, cultural appreciation, etc.)?; and 3) What are students’ overall perceptions of the short-term study abroad program? …

Mapping The New Latinx Identity: How Native Beliefs And Magic Realism In Latinx Literature And Culture Extrapolate The Need To Develop One's Identity Through The Retention Of Native Origins, Megan Hansen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
The disparity between the yearning to belong to a society and the inability to find acceptance within it plagues Latinx immigrants as they struggle to establish a balance between their culture of origin and the need for assimilation in the United States. A partial formation of identity in both spaces leaves Latinx immigrants torn between assimilation or isolation, creating internal conflict as they strive to locate a space to belong. Using the theme of folk religion under the scope of magic realism as the canvas, Latinx authors, such as Ernesto Quiñónez in Changó´s Fire and Taína, Érika Sánchez in …

Reproductive Rights Are Human Rights! Forced Sterilization Of Latino Communities And The Long Histroy Of Human Rights Violations In The United States, Jenna Riches, Andria Araujo
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
As a post-colonial nation, the United States of America has denounced the attitudes of blatant racism and discrimination against marginalized groups. However, racism is deeply embedded within the laws and organizations of the country. This phenomenon is called institutional or systemic racism and manifests discrimination in almost all public and private sectors of society, including employment, housing, healthcare and education. Because these attitudes and procedures are so ingrained in our society, it is very difficult to identify certain policies as being racist or discriminatory, and therefore it is even more difficult to change these harmful practices. This research will examine …
Trauma In Latinx Communities In The United States As Seen Through Literature, Jessica Snider, Kate Allen
Trauma In Latinx Communities In The United States As Seen Through Literature, Jessica Snider, Kate Allen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Multifaceted trauma is a common aspect of the minority experience in the United States, and Latinx are no exception. They experience discrimination, racism, poverty, and a convergence of cultures that leave them with an ambivalent sense of identity. The premise of this research is to show how historical traumas provoke in the main characters a desire to escape their plight through seeking education, expressing themselves through writing, and distancing themselves from their heritage. This study utilizes Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street (1983), Ernesto Quiñónez’s Chango’s Fire (2004) and Taína (2019), Érika L. Sánchez’s I Am Not Your Perfect …

You have learned two words in a second language just by reading the title of the book. Think about that for a moment and reflect upon your prior foreign language experiences. Often, students enter language classes with previously acquired skills, be they from secondary school or another college. Many say, “I have studied Spanish for years and don’t know how to speak or write it,” while others are a bit anxious about taking a second language for the first time, but all are overwhelmed by the expensive textbooks and online packages that don’t seem to be practical or relevant. We …

Perhaps you remembered what the title of your book means from your previous experiences with Spanish. That is a great start! We want you to know this book has been designed with many types of learners in mind. Our goals were to address the need for students to achieve the ability to communicate in written and spoken form. Con La Pluma Entre Dos Mundos - Vintatge Edition - Prologue, Damaris Serrano, Fátima Araúz, Megan Mckarns, Michael Daniel Curtis Stanley, María Astudillo
Con la pluma entre dos mundos
It has been said that writing is knowledge. This second season of the student magazine Con la pluma entre dos mundos [With the Pen Between Two Worlds] is a testament to that.
This project was born in 2005, when I arrived at Wright State. It was the result of my wanting to share the amazement and admiration I felt on reading the written works of my students in very different subjects: from Composition I, II and III to seminars on special topics in Spanish, which included culture and literature. From the elementary language to Conversation courses, in which participants had …

Con La Pluma Entre Dos Mundos - Post Edition - Prologue, Volume 2, Number 4, Damaris Serrano, Fátima Araúz, Megan Mckarns, Michael Daniel Curtis Stanley, Morgan Foister
Con la pluma entre dos mundos
In Volume II, there are 4 issues or journals, three of Latin American literature and one of Advanced Composition (years 2020-2021). This volume has been named “Post” because of its postmodern approach within Hispanic Cultural Studies.
These issues are also of great importance because they respond to the literary, professional, and linguistic work in Spanish produced during the peak of the pandemic, when teaching had to become a synchronous experience through virtual space.
The Survey of Spanish American Literature is part of the core curriculum for the B.A. in Spanish, offered by the Spanish program, at Wright State University. However, …

Con La Pluma Entre Dos Mundos - Blogs Of Latin American Culture And Identity - Prologue, Blog 1-2, Damaris Serrano, Fátima Araúz, Megan Mckarns, Michael Daniel Curtis Stanley
Con la pluma entre dos mundos
This volume III contains two blogs on Hispanic/Latin American culture and identity but goes beyond a link in cyberspace: the creative work presented in these blogs represent a journey through the culture of Spanish-speaking countries –including the United States– and dwell on the peculiarities that shape identity.
The works are the product of intense discussion and analysis in class, by groups and in individual and collective presentations, and consider historical aspects from the conquest by the Spaniards to the present time.
A dynamic that contrasts Modernity with Postmodernity, the classic with the innovative prevails. Here you will find texts in …

Fantasy And Realism In Contemporary Ecuadorian Literature (1976-2006), Kimberly E. Contag
Fantasy And Realism In Contemporary Ecuadorian Literature (1976-2006), Kimberly E. Contag
MSU Authors Collection
My purpose in this book is not to assess how well Ecuadorian literature fits into the broad Latin American literary scene or the global scene in particular, but instead to read and analyze how Ecuadorian writers communicate ideas about the world they live in through realism and fantasy. It is the nature of Ecuadorians to express their experience in these terms to portray a unique and multifaceted voice. To that end, I propose a model for analyzing the function of fantasy and realism in literature, principally in the novel, short story, flash fiction, poetry, flash poetry, and theater, and offer …

Do you remember reading or being read children's books? Were they about leyendas y mitos, historias or places you had been near home? ¿Was there a vaivén between languages? In this talk, Dr. Anna M. Nogar will discuss the research involved in creating illustrated, bilingual books with a regional focus for children; how such books are written; and what is involved in their reading for young audiences. Teaching and working with current students in an online undergraduate class on "La vida juvenil bilingüe" in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Dr. Nogar shares that experience and helps us think about …
Don Quixote And Catholicism, Michael Mcgrath
Don Quixote And Catholicism, Michael Mcgrath
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Four hundred years since its publication, Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote continues to inspire and to challenge its readers. The universal and timeless appeal of the novel, however, has distanced its hero from its author and its author from his own life and the time in which he lived. The discussion of the novel’s Catholic identity, therefore, is based on a reading that returns Cervantes’s hero to Cervantes’s text and Cervantes to the events that most shaped his life. The authors and texts McGrath cites, as well as his arguments and interpretations, are mediated by his religious sensibility. Consequently, he …
