Special Focus Introduction. Set Up And Shut Out: Immigration And Criminality In Contemporary Spanish Fiction, Jeffrey K. Coleman
Special Focus Introduction. Set Up And Shut Out: Immigration And Criminality In Contemporary Spanish Fiction, Jeffrey K. Coleman
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
The beginning of the twenty-first century has seen mass immigration from the Global South to the Global North. Unfortunately, the geopolitical and racial dynamics of this migration flow often lead to a purported nexus between immigration and criminality. In immigrant-receiving nations, this is especially the case, where sometimes the government, the media, and even the population support a xenophobic perspective based on the interconnection between immigration and criminality. Spain serves as an interesting case study for understanding how cultural productions reflect and/or critique that tendency because between 2000 and 2010 it had the world's second largest net immigration rate. The …

Undocumented Crime In Juan Mayorga ’S Animales Nocturnos , Jeffrey K. Coleman
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
The link between criminality and immigration is often personified in the undocumented immigrant. As nations have constricted the flow of immigrants, laws have inscribed a criminal culpability attached to the lack of documentation. The lack of papers becomes such a part of their persona that in Spanish the colloquial term for an undocumented immigrant is a sin papeles ‘illegal immigrant.’ Juan Mayorga’s chilling 2003 play Animales nocturnos (Nocturnal) explores the lengths to which laws can be used to criminalize and psychologically abuse undocumented immigrants. This paper will explore how immigration law manifests itself in the play and how said manifestation …
Clara Gardenia Otero, Palmira Parés Y El Feminismo Queer De Manuel Ramos Otero, Dinorah Cortes-Velez
Clara Gardenia Otero, Palmira Parés Y El Feminismo Queer De Manuel Ramos Otero, Dinorah Cortes-Velez
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
This essay examines the short stories “Romance de Clara Gardenia Otero” and “El cuento de la Mujer del Mar” to reveal the way in which Ramos Otero’s writing adopts the sign of the feminine as an empowering archetype. These stories make allies of the queer and the feminine in order to reject bourgeois feminism. This brand of feminism does not manage to escape the patriarchal dichotomy and puts the individualist project before a broader decolonizing goal. By posing these female characters of mythical stature as his alter egos, Ramos Otero departs from the frame of reference of subalternity ethnographies in …
Explicit Intervention For Spanish Pragmatic Development During Short‐Term Study Abroad: An Examination Of Learner Request Production And Cognition, Todd A. Hernández, Paulo Boero
Explicit Intervention For Spanish Pragmatic Development During Short‐Term Study Abroad: An Examination Of Learner Request Production And Cognition, Todd A. Hernández, Paulo Boero
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
The present study examined the impact of pedagogical intervention on students’ request performance during short‐term study abroad (SA). Prior to departure, students received explicit instruction about requests. During their time abroad, they were given tasks to strategically develop their pragmatic competence. Requests were assessed with a discourse completion task. Results indicated that over time the students improved their request performance, as rated by two native Spanish speakers. Examination of the students’ requests revealed that their use of strategies also improved. Retrospective verbal reports (RVRs) performed after the posttests indicated that during second language (L2) Spanish request production, the students attended …

L2 Spanish Apologies Development During Short-Term Study Abroad, Todd A. Hernandez
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
The present study examined the apologies of 18 study abroad (SA) students during a short-term SA experience in Madrid, Spain. Apologies were assessed with a discourse completion task (DCT) consisting of five vignettes that varied across three variables: relative social status of the interlocutor, relative social distance, and seriousness of the offense. Based on performance ratings assigned to them by two native Spanish speakers, the students made significant gains in pragmatic appropriateness from pretest to posttest, on two out of the five individual vignettes, and on the five combined vignettes. Examination of the students’ apologies before and after SA further …
Privileging The Oriental In Paco Bezerra's El Señor Ye Ama Los Dragones, Jeffrey K. Coleman
Privileging The Oriental In Paco Bezerra's El Señor Ye Ama Los Dragones, Jeffrey K. Coleman
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
Paco Bezerra's 2015 thriller-comedy El señor Ye ama los dragones destabilized the immigration narrative that often appears in Spanish theatre by creating a story in which Chinese immigrants are the focus, thus giving visibility and agency to a community that is little discussed in Spanish cultural production. Throughout his play, Bezerra inverts the common approach to immigration drama in which the Western is privileged in structure and in plot. Rather, in this play, the Oriental is privileged on a structural and narrative level, and the play concludes with the triumph of Xiaomei over her white Spanish counterparts. I propose that …

Language Practice And Study Abroad, Todd A. Hernández
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
The present study measures the impact that pragmatic intervention has when students are exposed to targeted language practice during a six-week study abroad programme in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The intervention had three goals. First, the researcher drew learners’ attention to language use and context through discussion about pragmatics and exposure to authentic input. Second, the intervention aimed at making students aware of the pragmatic norms of the target culture, including the appropriate use of communication strategies. The third and final goal was to afford the participants opportunities to engage in what DeKeyser (2007) and others argue are five critical aspects …

Cuba Y Cataluña En La España De Franco: Las Crónicas De Viaje De Josep Pla Para Destino, Pilar Bellver
Cuba Y Cataluña En La España De Franco: Las Crónicas De Viaje De Josep Pla Para Destino, Pilar Bellver

Death Of The Emissary: Language, Metonymy, And European Complicity In Juan Diego Botto’S “La Carta”, Jeffrey K. Coleman
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
Juan Diego Botto’s 2005 monologue “La carta” explores the real-life death of Yaguine Koita and Fodé Tounkara, two Guinean boys who in 1999 died attempting to reach Europe with a letter addressed to European officials. A close reading of Botto’s monologue illustrates how the letter by Yaguine and Fodé functions as an archive that explores and redefines the liminal spaces, and therefore the relationship, between Europe and Africa. The monologue and the letter elucidate the boys’ position as emissaries who seek to reconcile the European continent with its complicity in the state of Africa.

Places/Non-Places: Galicia On The Road Of St. James, Eugenia Afinoguénova
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
This chapter offers a critical reconsideration of the theory according to which the Road of St. James (Camiño de Santiago) provides a site for ethnic identity-making capable of modernizing Galicia as a rural region. By definition, a route or itinerary—rather than a fixed site of any kind—provides a sequence of places to pass through, overlapping in an intriguing way with Marc Augé’s concept of “non-places.” Putting into a comparative perspective the measures that led to the consolidation of the Road as a trans-regional and transnational itinerary during the presidency of the conservative Partido Popular in Galicia between 1990 and 2005, …

Short-Term Study Abroad: Perspectives On Speaking Gains And Language Contact, Todd A. Hernandez
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
Previous studies have shown that study abroad has a positive effect on second language (L2) learning outcomes for students who spend at least a semester abroad. It is unclear, however, whether a short-term experience also has a measurable impact on L2 development. The present study examines the relationship between speaking proficiency gains made by students during a short-term study abroad program and their target language use outside of class in the host environment. To determine the potential relationships between speaking gains and language use, a background information questionnaire, a two-part modified language contact profile (LCP), and a pre-program and post-program …

Picturesque Violence: Tourism, The Film Industry, And The Heritagization Of ‘Bandoleros’ In Spain, 1905–1936, Eugenia Afinoguénova, Eduardo Rodríguez Merchán
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
This article examines the debates about the Andalusian ‘bandoleros’ (bandits) in the context of early tourism as a state-guided policy in Spain. As we argue, the development of tourism made Spanish intellectuals reconsider the real armed activity in Andalucía as part of Spanish national heritage and a tourist attraction. Consistent with the stereotypical image of Spain coined by the Romantic travelers, such an early heritagization of brigandry reveals the role of the élites in recasting exotic imagery into modern tourism-shaped identities: in the hands of early century writers, bandits were reshaped as part of the ‘modern picturesque’. Furthermore, the role …
