Women And Carriages In 17th-Century Aragonese Burlesque Poetry, Almudena Vidorreta

During the 17th century, literature turned the growing number of carriages into a burlesque topic. There were countless poems written about traffic jams, accidents, or the proper way to ask a friend for a carriage, often considered a symbol of status. Literary references to carriages can tell us many things about the men and women who used them, as well as about gender stereotypes. Women and carriages were understood as interconnected elements in Early Modern Spain; carriages appear as a means to conquer feminine muses as well as a recurrent satirical topic even for women poets. José Navarro Bermuz, an Aragonese intellectual who worked for the Italian family of the Ludovisi, was known for his active participation in the literary academies and poetic competitions of his time, and for his collection of Poesías varias. My research entails an in-depth study of the intellectual and political landscape of the second half of the 17th century in which Navarro lived and wrote. La originalidad de algunos poetas satíricos del Siglo de Oro ha querido ser justificada por la crítica únicamente en la reformulación de un tema tan antiguo como el de la sátira, de la medicina en este caso. Sin embargo, la imitatio de los clásicos no implica la falta de contacto con la experiencia cotidiana, cuyo análisis ha de ser considerado un aspecto ineludible a la hora de apreciar la vituperación de personajes y acontecimientos ligados al autor.
