Background

On August 13th 2004, 166 people were killed and 106 were wounded at the UN’s Gatumba refugee camp in Burundi. Nearly all the victims were members of the Banyamulenge community, a Congolese Tutsi ethnic group who were deliberately targeted in the attack. The massacre was carried out by the Forces Nationales pour la Liberation (FNL), a Hutu supremacist rebel group fighting in Burundi’s civil war. Understanding the Gatumba Massacre requires understanding what forced those Banyamulenge refugees to flee their homes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and why the FNL targeted them. Teen television shows are highlighting the development of ethnic-racial identity. This is promising considering scholars label the development of ethnic-racial identity to be an essential product of the development of older children and adolescents (Syed & Azmitia, 2008, Umaña-Taylor et al., 2014).

Teen television shows are emphasizing factors in a person of colors' community or interactions with peers that may influence their overall well-being. The 2022 Global Voices Symposium occurred at a momentous time. In addition to the ongoing global pandemic, Russia had unleashed a brutal invasion of Ukraine. The presentations focused on students’ perspectives of study abroad, human rights, the role of women, COVID 19, new directions in study abroad, immigrant life, and the increasing importance of Africa. Each speaker brought a unique perspective to the conversation. Repeatedly, speakers spoke about the positive impact of global awareness in their personal and professional development. Artists, perhaps to emphasize their own dedication to the intellectual and manual skills required for making art, have long been drawn to the theme of labor, both in their depictions of workers and scenes of making. In the late seventeenth century, Dutch paintings frequently portrayed earnest and diligent artisans performing trades at shops or on the streets. Later, rapid economic, social and political changes throughout Europe in the mid-nineteenth century led to a more radical approach to realist representations of labor. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between religious affiliation and Native American Identity. Based on the findings of this study, a component of a Native American's Identity is their religious affiliation. To contribute to the research on Native American and Alaskan Native identity, this study targeted the teenage demographic of ages 12 to 19 years old. Over growing concern, expressed by tribal elders, about a loss of cultural identity amongst teens, this study investigates a connection between a teen’s sense of identity and their religious affiliation (Quigley, 2019). Carter, Jr., MSW, is a professor of Social Work and an academic activist with over 40 years at Marshall University and a total of 50 years of teaching, administering, and training in higher education. Professor Carter has taught and developed coursework in the areas of Appalachian social welfare, and legislation and has a 60-year legacy of social justice work. This advocacy began as a basketball player at Marshall where he was simultaneously a spokesperson for the student-led Civic Interest Progressives (CIP).
