“Pretty Is As Pretty Does:” Child Beauty Pageants In Deep East Texas, Taryn Lenert

Introduction

Do child beauty pageants affect contestants’ perception of gender norms, gender performance, and confidence? To answer this question, three observations of pageants, three face-to-face interviews, and survey responses from two East Texas pageant Facebook groups will be analyzed through the lens of West and Zimmerman’s theoretical concept of doing gender (1987). Deep East Texas is unique due to the fact that much of its culture originates in old southern views of beauty, the norm of hyper-femininity, and the importance of traditional gender roles in both public and private life.

Men and women have different attitudes about sexism (Phys.org Staff, 2015). Men are more likely than women to be indifferent about sexist situations.

However, most studies have not examined attitudes that college students have about sexist situations, jokes, and advertisements.

Therefore the aim of the current study is to examine gender differences and perceptions of sexism/sexual objectification in college students.

To answer the question of how the Jesus film exemplifies media globalization, the author uses a critical review of globalization literature to look at the history of the Jesus film, how the film is an agent of cultural deposition, the technological and cultural influences of the film, the translations of the film, common critiques of the film, and the display of globalization in its production, promotion and use.

THe ideal American housewife is based off of post World War II media driven model. Society judged a 1950s family on the involvement of the wife within the home. By social standards housewives were expected to work full-time in the home. Electric appliances were introduced as saving devises and became socially accepted as necessities of the modern home. Contrary to popular belief electric home appliances did not reduce the amount of work required by a housewife but rather increased the number of obligations which she became responsible for.

Symbolic interaction is the best explanation as to why, despite regional differences, modern style wedding dresses have similarities between cultures. The NYC Maymester Trip 2011 was an unconventional learning experience. A small group of students drove up to NYC with Professor Peter Andrew for a Maymester Advanced Art Studio Course. Each student was responsible for making a connection between this class and their major. The Old World Amish, an Anabaptist Christian domination in the United States and Canada are know for their plain dress, avoidance of modern technology, and separation from the mainstream society.

A traditional agricultural religious group, the Old World Amish maintains isolation from the rest of the community. Financially well-off, they are homogeneous on education, occupation by gender, age at marriage, religion/ethnicity, and health care.

Although the Amish strongly discourage marriage between close cousins, the Lancaster Amish genealogy is described as mutational - inbreeding from multiple, remote connections rather than close consanguinity (first-cousin marriages).
