Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter

Readers of this Newsletter will be saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Helen Creighton, Canada's foremost collector of folksongs, on Tuesday, December 12, [1989], in Halifax. She was 90 years old. There is little I can add to Stephen Pedersen's fine article from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald (12/16/89) reprinted below beyond a couple of recollections of my own.

An Exploratory Study Of Female Networking In A Mormon Fundamentalist Polygynous Society, Janet Bennion Cannon Jun 1990

An Exploratory Study Of Female Networking In A Mormon Fundamentalist Polygynous Society, Janet Bennion Cannon

Dissertations and Theses

The present study is comprised of two parts: 1) an exploratory ethnography of a contemporary polygynous community governed by a strong patriarchal ideology in Pinesdale Montana with emphasis on social relationships, and 2) an analysis of the factors which have allowed women's groups to develop in Mormon fundamentalism. The ethnographic account of the community contextualizes the occurrence of female groups in Pinesdale. A model of the formation of female groups designed by Nancy Leis (1974) in her study of the West African Ijaw is used to provide a better understanding of how female groups are formed, and is applied to …

The Altered Mobile Home: A Stationary Image Of Work And Value, Gregory Kendall Jenkins Feb 1990

The Altered Mobile Home: A Stationary Image Of Work And Value, Gregory Kendall Jenkins

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As the medium cost of conventional housing rises, many people unable to incur such an expense look for alternative forms of adequate housing. In rural areas surrounding Bowling Green, Kentucky, several families have utilized the mobile home as a base to expand, embellish, and personalize, creating a larger more conventional-looking home. Many of these altered homes possess gabled roofs, rock exterior walls, and expansive interior space. Of primary concern is: why have these families undertaken a project of this nature?

As material culture scholars and folklorists examine our built environment, they find relationship between construction and the builders. What can …

Observations And Problems In Researching The Contemporary Glass-Bead Industry Of Northern China, Roderick Sprague, An Jiayao Jan 1990

Observations And Problems In Researching The Contemporary Glass-Bead Industry Of Northern China, Roderick Sprague, An Jiayao

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The status of glass-bead manufacturing in northern China is undergoing rapid change due to the development of the plastic-bead industry. Several manufacturing plants, including the large Beijing Glass Ware Factory, are no longer making beads and several other plants are contemplating changes. The variety of domestic glass beads available for purchase today would indicate a greater number of manufacturing sites than are mentioned in the popular literature.

Beadmaking In Islam: The African Trade And The Rise Of Hebron, Peter Francis Jr. Jan 1990

Beadmaking In Islam: The African Trade And The Rise Of Hebron, Peter Francis Jr.

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

This paper complements one which appeared in volume 1 of this journal, as it also deals with beads in the Islamic world. However, the present work takes a somewhat different approach, being based primarily on historical sources. It also has a different geographical orientation, dealing with commerce between the Islamic world and the northern portion of Africa. Concentrating mostly on the period from the 12th to the 20th century, it documents the rise of a new beadmaking center at Hebron, in the West Bank. The name "Kano beads" has recently been assigned to one class of Hebron beads, and their …

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

One of the earliest detailed descriptions of the Venetian bead industry is contained in an obscure book published in French in 1847 by the Venetian glassmaker Domenico Bussolin. Intended as a "Guide for the Foreigner," this work contains much useful information concerning bead manufacturing techniques and the socioeconomic aspects of the industry. To make this text generally available, a translation prepared by Karklins and Adams is provided here.
