Aims This paper discusses the issues facing the nursing academic workforce and the development of a project at the University of Wollongong in Australia which attempts to address this problem. Background The project draws on Boyers work around scholarship reconsidered to enable new ways of thinking about the nature of research and how the work of a diversifying workforce can be recognized and rewarded within institutions. Methods We conducted a series of interviews with senior university staff to identify key issues around academic promotion processes. The Coordinators Leading and Advancing Sessional Staff (CLASS) project, as it became known, explored a leadership capacity development framework that included targeted professional development as a means of improving academic leadership and management of sessional teaching teams. There were four partner universities: the University of Wollongong (lead), the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of Western Sydney and the Australian Catholic University. This report presents the details and findings from a two-year ALTC leadership project to enhance the quality of teaching through the development of subject coordinators' leadership capacity in four institutions.
