Through The Words Of Those Who Have Experienced It: Reading The Whitney Plantation Along Neoslave Narratives, Sarah Payne
Study the South
Recent representations of slavery, however well intentioned, have provoked discussions about who should represent black pain and oppression and what purpose such representations serve. Also evoking such questions are contemporary plantation tours, most of which are white-centered, “moonlight and magnolia” recreations. There have been efforts to represent slavery more accurately at plantations such as Oak Alley, and most notably, the Whitney Plantation, which opened in 2014 in Wallace, Louisiana.
This essay asks how our understanding of the Whitney Plantation, as a representation of slavery, a public history project, and an example of dark tourism, might be affected by reading the …

Cairo has always been a crossroads of cultures, set between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It has been home to significant Jewish, Christian and Muslim populations who have been impacted by the various ruling dynasties who have held sway there, including the Byzantines, early Islamic rulers, Tulunids, Shi'i Fatimids, and later Sunni Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. Duquesne’s five-year Speech-Language Pathology program immerses its pre-professional phase students in an array of subjects that extend beyond the health sciences. Classes related to anatomy, linguistics, and healthcare make up the core of the speech-language curriculum, but other skills linked to art, philosophy, and faith are necessary to understand the diverse population of clients one may encounter. Speech-language pathologists are required to be culturally aware and strive for cultural competence. By understanding microcultures that form a person including age, class, geographic region, sexual preference, ethnicity, race, occupation, etc., a clinician can cater and gear assessments, results, and therapy toward each …

Fox was adopted by an American family and moved to the United States. Fox went to school and learned English. He had some difficulties adjusting to the US because the environment was totally different than the one in which he grew up. Fox realized that his new family cared about him, which inspired him to do something good with the opportunity that was given to him. He became an art …
