Quantum Of Solitude: Lonelines As Experienced By Pastors' Wives, Jama Davis, Fred Milacci

This phenomenological study investigated the individual experiences of eight pastors’ wives with the phenomenon, loneliness. Data was collected using informal, conversational, taped and transcribed interviews. Descriptions of the experiences of loneliness and the general factors contributing to loneliness were identified by the participants. The experiences and general contributing factors were compared and contrasted. The findings of this study suggest three factors which most significantly impact pastors’ wives and loneliness. Suggestions for future research involving pastors’ wives and pastors are provided.

Discussion of the ways in which development volunteering has been stripped of its political meaning and lost its social justice and political dimensions. While the language of 'participation', 'partnership' and 'empowerment' is retained, volunteering has become infused with national interest and economic agendas. It is not a process, however, that is unchallenged.

This is an expanded version, with color illustrations, of Krohn’s Stanley article published by the Dixfield Historical Society in 2012. This updated article is followed by an article by L. Hirsch that documents the discovery of Henry O. Stanley’s personal fishing tackle. Stanley’s tackle, more than 100 years after his death, was still relatively intact. Originals of Krohn’s expanded article, along with Hirsch’s article, are on file in Special Collections, Raymond H. Fogler Library, University of Maine.

Deterring The ‘Boat People’: Explaining The Australian Government's People Swap Response To Asylum Seekers, Jaffa Mckenzie, Reza Hasmath

This article examines why Australia has taken a tough stance on ‘boat people’, through an analysis of the Malaysian People Swap response. The findings support the view that Australia’s asylum seeker policy agenda is driven by populism, wedge politics and a culture of control. The article further argues that these political pressures, in sum, hold numerous negative implications for the tone of Australia’s political debate, the quality of policy formulation, as well as for asylum seekers and refugees themselves.
