The controversy over American social capital that was fueled by Robert Putnam's "Bowling Alone" work seems unlikely to abate any time soon. Whether civility and trust are as frayed and diminished as contended is surely an open question. But whatever one's position, the discussion has been good for political science and good for policy studies.
