I Was Looking For God: A Study Of Wehrmacht Personnel And Their Personal Relationships With Religion, Christopher Bishop
I Was Looking For God: A Study Of Wehrmacht Personnel And Their Personal Relationships With Religion, Christopher Bishop
Master's Theses
The Wehrmacht was Germany’s fighting force in the field during World War II. Its brutality and discriminatory practices rivaled that of the Nazi paramilitary and police units dispatched alongside them in newly conquered areas during this conflict. Coming from a society that was not at all unfamiliar with Christianity, some within the Wehrmacht related to Christianity in some form and attempted to use it to either justify actions or make sense of the world around them.
While considerable scholarship exists on the Nazi Party’s relationship to Christianity as a convenient propaganda tool for both soldier and civilian alike, the historiography …

Writing Others’ Stories: Autoethnographic Reflections On Historical Research, Representation, And Bakhtin, Jennifer L. Adams
Communication & Theatre Faculty Publications
I use autoethnographic reflection to explore the personal and professional ethical challenges that have emerged over twenty years working with a set of one hundred historic love letters found discarded in an attic. Concerns of representation, narration, and authorship of the Other(s) by historic researchers are explored. Bakhtin’s concept of answerability is then elucidated as a means of reflecting upon choices writers make in researching of the lived experience of everyday people from the past. Issues including authorial responsibility, heteroglossia, polyphony, and the chronotope are explored.

Undergraduate Distinction Papers
What is love? People all over the world have different stories pertaining to this phenomenon, but do the experiences in our personal lives stop us from understanding the experiences of others? Although it may be difficult to see other points of view besides, it is possible to connect to stories that are not our own. The purpose of this study is to assess how people perceive and connect to different love stories, and how these perceptions differ between those in the fine arts and those in the arts & sciences. Participants in this study will be exposed to a dance …

Robert Underwood Johnson, author, conservationist, and diplomat, was born in New York in 1853. For more than forty years he was associated with The Century Magazine. Associate Editor under Richard Watson Gilder, he succeeded to the editorship from 1909-1913. Using the influence of The Century Magazine, Underwood, in conjunction with famed naturalist John Muir, was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Yosemite National Park in the California in 1890. In 1889, Johnson also encouraged Muir to "start an association" to help protect the Sierra Nevada, inspiring the formation of the Sierra Club in 1892. In 1920-1921 he …

'The Letter Killeth': The Obscurity Of Language And Communication In Thomas Hardy's Jude The Obscure 2016, Victoria T. Corning
Master's Theses
While the epistolary novel is a genre closely associated with 18th century England, 19th century Victorian literature also incorporates letter writing as a significant form of communication. Written messages convey what can often not be said out loud, as it is easier to hide behind a pen and paper, write in solitude, and be absent when the letter is read by the recipient. Impulsive and emotional thoughts and feelings can be written down immediately and then later edited, which makes writing an unstable form of communication. Is the author conveying true feelings or concealing true feelings? Layering multiple modes of …

Guides to Manuscript Collections
This collection is composed of letters and postcards to Lillian from her brothers Donald and Darrell while they served and trained for WWI. Included in the collection are Lillian’s personal papers during her high school and early college years, such as programs, yearbooks, student publications, and grade reports. Also included are collected publications, clippings, and ephemera related to her brothers’ service in WWI.
It is uncertain how the folder of Clendenning letters written during WWI were added to the collection, but they are from Robert Clendenning (serving in the war) to his father on the home front.

Dear Brother
Yours of July 30th came to hand last week and received a warm welcome, it is such a pleasure and relief to me to hear from home. When I say this you perhaps may wonder why it is that I am so delinquent in writing but the fact is my dear brother that I have little to write about except myself (and that so very unsatisfactory) that I often commence a letter and give it up thoroughly overcome with the blackest kind of blues. The isolated life …

My dear Brother Enclosed I send you an account of sales of the Rubber Boots & Shoes shipped me by Ashley the charges on them, are only what I actually paid out on them and nothing in the way of commissions. The shipments were unfortunate though the goods, being of such an inferior quality, had they proved equal to Haywards Boots &, Shoes that are sold in this market, I think that I could have made something upon them instead of being obliged to sell them at a ruinous loss. I had …

My Dear Brother When I wrote you last under date of Dec [December] 21st I mentioned (for the hundredth time probably) that I was going to improve, and write you oftner, than I had been in the habit of doing, but alas for human resolutions, and most especially my own, for they are barren of fruits, and productive of only regrets, at their failure. According to your request, I will write all business matters upon a separate sheet hereafter. I have not much to write at the present, and the little that I have to write I fear you will find very unsatisfactory, for it most assuredly is so to me. I have so woefully slipped up in all my calculations and come so far short of realizing what I expected, that I fear that you will have lost all confidence in my ability and judgment, and have come to the, perhaps, very reasonable conclusion, that I …

This is Christmas day and as I take my pen to write you a few lines. Wishing you a merrie time and a happy New Year, my mind travels back to years, and I am again taking my Christmas dinner at St. Andrews surrounded by the loved ones at home, it is a pleasing illusion, and I suffer myself to enjoy it for awhile, but as I dismiss it, God knows, how much I wish that it was a reality. Dear Brothers,
It is now more than two years since I have received a letter from you, or have written to you. This is not right, we should correspond once a year at the least, but I suppose that you like myself, have been your whole time, so occupied with business, that although you have often thought of me, and, determined to write to me when you would have leisure, yet the time has insensibly passed away, and the letters are still unwritten. Dear Brother,
Your very welcome letter of Aug 18th reached me yesterday, and my heart was once more gladdened by knowing that at that date you were all well at home. According to my promise in my letter to William by the last mail, I now proceed to answer yours of July 8th. I received your letter of Aug [August] 17th in Sept. [September] but not in time to answer it by last mail
You can readily conceive that it was with much anxiety that I opened it, for the black seal told me, too well, that some-one who was near and dear to me had been taken by the hand of Death, to that bourne from whence no traveller [traveler] returns.
I should have liked very much to have seen brother Benton again in this world, but the will of the Lord be …
