Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 991. Project titled: “"Funeral Customs" compiled by Joe McGown for a folk studies class at Western Kentucky University. Includes individual survey sheets listing a single funeral custom, the informant, date, and location. A large number of photographs, documenting tombstones, are included in the collection. The location of the tombstones is not included, but most of the survey work was done in Warren County, Kentucky.

Howard, Wayne County, Illinois. He replies to Howard’s request for money with a description of poor local economic conditions, including low prices for crops and horses, difficulty collecting debts, and even lack of money to pay for marriage licenses. He expresses his wish to marry and relates an anecdote about three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter, the last referring to bachelors.

On 19 September 1865, she writes of her family in New Albany, Indiana, her husband’s business, and her affection for Catherine’s young daughter. On 22 February 1866, she relates further news of her family and husband, and wonders if Catherine has another baby; in light of her delicate health, she suggests that Catherine send her husband “trav[e]ling” and offers to help “give him a good whip[p]ing.”

Finding aid and scan of a portion of a diary (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Collection 564. Diary kept by George Henry Sargent from 1 May 1851 to 10 January 1853. The Harvard student writes on a variety of subjects, including education, religion, historical events, travel, etc. Of particular interest is a three-month sojourn in 1852 with his sister, Lucy Baldwin (Sargent) Rupert in Louisville, Kentucky. While in Kentucky, he also visits Henderson and Mammoth Cave.
