This collection consists of various correspondence between POWs and their families, including 86 letters, 174 postcards, and about eight package slips during both world wars. Most of this correspondence was authored by the prisoners and sent to their families from camps in Europe, although it contains some correspondence from camps in Asia and Africa. The collection also contains correspondence from prisoners in concentration camps, such as Auschwitz, and from interned civilians in France and Germany. Because these letters were the main way to contact family members, most of the POW correspondence contain thoughts of homesickness and loneliness along with updates …

This collection includes twenty four letters from Dwight D. and Mamie Eisenhower to Col. and Mrs. Sam White during the years, 1955-1974. They primarily contain expressions of thanks for correspondence and gifts from the Whites, as well as news about the Eisenhower family and Dwight D. Eisenhower’s health. With the exception of two handwritten letters from Mamie, all are typed and signed. Most of Mamie’s letters contain additional handwritten notes. One letter was typed and signed on behalf of Mamie Eisenhower by her secretary, Mary Jane McCaffree.

This collection consists of typewritten transcriptions of letters sent from David Caldwell between 1818 and 1853, an Episcopal clergyman, to members of his family. They discuss personal and family matters. Letters were sent from Bennington, Vermont, Georgetown, Washington, DC, and Amherst County, Virginia. These copies were found in “History of Joseph Caldwell and his descendants…” published in 1926 in Newburyport, Mass.

The 1942 letter is from the Vice President of the Commercial Credit Company, Inc., Commercial Bankers in Baltimore, Maryland, and discusses new loan programs created as a result of World War II.

Other materials in the collection are copies of Ivory Soap advertisements, possibly an envelope that contained the letters. Given that these materials are copies, legibility varies.

The letter describes an engagement at Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia; gives losses of the 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company B; and comments on Lincoln's assassination. A transcript of the letter is included in the collection.

The Thomas Family Papers are a valuable source of information concerning family life in Rock Hill, S.C. during the period 1920-1945. The collection includes diaries, Thomas Tours brochures, newspaper clippings speeches, financial and estate records, genealogies, menus, photographs, memorabilia and an extensive body of correspondence comprising the largest part of the collection. Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas brought his family to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop College in 1914. The Campbell-Staats collection consists of two separate series of information. The first series is comprised of the Jennie Ratliff Campbell papers. These papers consist mainly of personal correspondence to Miss Ratliff dating from 1875-1888. The majority of these letter were from two particular individuals, R. G. Drysdale and W. S. Livengood, and concerned everyday occurrence and mutual acquaintances. The remainder of the series is made up of samples from her schoolwork, songs she had copied, business correspondence, and a book of poetry given to her by her fiancee, C. W. Campbell.

The bulk of the collection consists of letters written to Eugenia Miller Thackston while she was a student in boarding school in Greenupsburg, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio, by her parents in Barboursville, Virginia before the Civil War. The letters include information about family members, the difficulty in maintaining a school, and developments in the town of Barboursville. There are also some letters written during the Civil War describing the hardships of the war on the family. Other items include addresses and writings of Eugenia's husband, Benjamin Thackston, while he was a student at Randolph-Macon College.
