"World War I has occupied an uneasy place in the American public and political consciousness.1 In the 1920s and 1930s, controversies over the war permeated the nation’s cultural and political life, influencing memorial culture and governmental policy. Interest in the war, however, waned considerably after World War II, a much larger and longer war for the United States. Despite a plethora of scholarly works examining nearly every aspect of the war, interest in the war remains limited even among academic historians. Teaching the Empire explores how Habsburg Austria utilized education to cultivate the patriotism of its people. Public schools have been a tool for patriotic development in Europe and the United States since their creation in the nineteenth century. On a basic level, this civic education taught children about their state while also articulating the common myths, heroes, and ideas that could bind society together. For the most part historians have focused on the development of civic education in nation-states like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Faroosh was a cameraman for a private television program in Afghanistan working on a documentary about the Taliban. When he and his crew were discovered, the Taliban attacked them and he and his wife fled to Turkey, walking 12 hours to get there. Upon arrival the police arrested and harassed them. The Johnson Family Papers consist of correspondence, diaries, journals, speeches, reports, newspaper clippings, financial records, photographs, and other records relating to the family of David Bancroft Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop (1886-1928) including, his wife Mai Rutledge Smith Johnson (Class of 1898), and their children, David Bancroft, Jr., Burgh, and Suzanne Johnson. The collection covers topics concerning David Bancroft Johnson’s work with the Columbia, South Carolina school system and the origins of Winthrop. Correspondents include Edward Southey Joynes, J.C. McCurry, Frances W. Parker, A.D. Mayo, William G. Burgin, and W.R. Bradford among many others.

A handwritten letter from Henry M. Fulmer addressed to Alfred L. Shoemaker, dated August 1, 1954. Within, Henry expresses his shock upon hearing news of a group of Amish men being jailed for refusing to allow their children to be educated after the eighth grade. Henry expresses a desire for legislation to be passed with the help of Shoemaker, in ensuring the Amish are exempt from compulsory education.
