Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of one scrapbook entitled containing photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia collected by Elizabeth Francis (later Agee) during and after her time at Marshall. Materials in the scrapbook include an autograph and note section, dance cards, sorority correspondence and invitations, student government materials, a student directory, event programs, photographs of Francis at Marshall and, later, family photographs, a gradebook for an 8th grade course taught by Francis, and other mixed materials such as handkerchiefs and calling cards. Also included in the scrapbook are slips of paper identifying subjects or items written by Susan Riggs, Agee’s daughter.

This collection is an artificially created collection from different donors, consisting primarily of scrapbooks, programs, and other ephemera related to Huntington High School. Ephemera includes a 1920 issue of the Tatler student newspaper, commencement programs, and materials created during various class reunions for the classes of 1921, 1928, 1929, 1937, and 1945. Scrapbooks for the class of 1921 reunions and Myrtle R. Cooke’s “The Girl Graduate’s Scrapbook” include extensive amounts of photographs and printed material related to the reunions and Huntington High School respectively. Cooke’s scrapbook also includes unrelated family materials.

This collection is composed of three scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings about various events in Huntington, concert programs, photographs (mostly unidentified and of family), such ephemera as ticket stubs, postcards, and greeting cards, and monthly reports of his work at the post office. Topics covered in the clippings and ephemera include trains, Huntington history, images of women, and local news and obituaries. Most significant about the collection is the unique assortment and number of items present, capturing a snapshot of life in early to mid-twentieth century Huntington, West Virginia and America.

Also included in the scrapbook are clippings and snapshots of husband John Alden Goodno, as well as other family photographs. The cover of the scrapbook states, “Reba Garden Awards * Activities, Narcissus Show, Blue Ribbons: JAG – Reba family 1937, Paul/Lucille 1988 club, Wedding invites 1929, Herald dance picture at Barry Seaview Party, Reba family reunion, 1934”. The clippings focus on the club’s efforts to improve literacy and health conditions of disadvantaged children of Huntington, West Virginia. Areas of note include the Club’s work to fight tuberculosis through yearly drives and educational scholarships prioritizing women.

The scrapbook is a repurposed cash book with extensive amounts of clippings, correspondence, and ephemera pasted in. This collection consists of scanned copies of clippings, a book, two scrapbooks primarily about Irene Drukker Broh and her mother Sara Tobias Broh. Included are one scrapbook each by Irene and Sara, each consisting primarily of clippings about social issues and other ephemera. Also included in the collection is a significant number of clippings about Irene throughout her life, a term paper written about Irene’s activist work, and a copy of “A Literary Find” by Sara Tobias Drukker, composed of a posthumous publication of Drukker’s work. As all items in the collections are scanned, legibility varies.
