The Impact Of Irish Ireland On Young Poland, 1890-1918, John A. Merchant

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

John. A. Merchant examines the impact of a contemporary cultural movement, Irish Ireland, on its Polish counterpart, Young Poland. He traces the reception of Irish literature in the form of translations of works by W. B. Yeats and John Millington Synge in Poland through translations by Jan Kasprowicz, Zenon "Miriam" Przesmycki and others as well as through a variety of cultural commentaries by Polish critics and by means of stage productions of Irish plays by theater directors, such as Tadeusz Pawlikowski.

The "Incongruous Stranger" As Structural Element In The Novels Of Elsa Triolet, Lorene M. Birden Jun 2001

The "Incongruous Stranger" As Structural Element In The Novels Of Elsa Triolet, Lorene M. Birden

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

In Language in Literature, Roman Jakobson underlines the presence of a certain device, which he calls he superfluous passerby, in Russian realist literature. This element has traveled into French literature with a Russian-born expatriate novelist. Several works by Eisa Triolet present this type of character, and extend the device structurally. In this device a character can provoke a new development in plot or character relations. Such a character has no direct relationship to the characters or events portrayed. Therefore, as opposed to classic novelistic perspective, this incongruous and unknown character shifts and blurs characterial hierarchy. The superfluous passerby displaces …

Vegetarianism In Russia: The Tolstoy(An) Legacy, Ronald D. Leblanc May 2001

Vegetarianism In Russia: The Tolstoy(An) Legacy, Ronald D. Leblanc

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

The collapse of communist rule in Russia at the beginning of the 1990s revived a whole series of social, cultural, and ideological phenomena that had either lain dormant or been almost entirely absent during the Soviet period, phenomena ranging from pornography and prostitution to religion and real estate. Vegetarianism, which had been demonized under Stalin as a pernicious and insidiously "anti-scientific" doctrine promulgated by the ideologues of the exploitative classes in the capitalist West, experienced a revival that began during the glasnost' years; it has continued to remain popular in post communist Russia as well. The Vegetarian Society of the …

Canonizing The Wieszcz: The Subjective Turn In Polish Literary Biography In The 1860s, Andrea Lanoux Jan 2001

Canonizing The Wieszcz: The Subjective Turn In Polish Literary Biography In The 1860s, Andrea Lanoux

Slavic Studies Faculty Publications

Part of a forum on the work of Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz. The writer examines the radical change in the presentation of poets' biographies in Polish textbooks of literature during the 1860s. She contends that this change coincided with the stabilization of a Polish romantic literary canon and involved, among other things, the subject's personal life, contributions to the national cause, and subjective experiences and feelings. This subjective turn in literary biography demonstrates the relationship between canon building and nation building, she argues, in the respect that it served to unite millions of people living under different political systems. Moreover, …

Origin Of Communist Policing In The People's Republic Of China, Kam C. Wong Jan 2001

Origin Of Communist Policing In The People's Republic Of China, Kam C. Wong

Kam C. Wong

This is an investigation into the origin of Communist policing in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Existing literature on the PRC police (baowei, gongan, jingcha) are not in agreement as to the origin of Communist policing. Most sources, particularly western ones, point to the formation of the Ministry of Public Security in November of 1949 as the origination of Communist police. Others, particularly the PRC police historians, have traced the starting date to November of 1931 when the Chinese Soviet government in Shan-Gan-Ning border area established the Political Security Department (zhengzhi baoweiju). Still, a minority have suggested that Communist …
