Near Death Experiences And The Evidence - A Review Essay, Gary R. Habermas Oct 1996

Near Death Experiences And The Evidence - A Review Essay, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

It is probably an understatement to say that the phenomena of near-death experiences (NDEs) is riding a massive wave of popularity and has been for much of the last twenty years. Best-selling books, firsthand articles, television documentaries and movies regularly describe the fascination we have with stories "from the other side." The typically-reported sensations are now common parlance: floating above one's dying body, travelling down a dark tunnel, sensing the presence of departed loved ones or spiritual beings, and experiencing a Being of light.

From a more critical perspective, one problem with this popularity is that friends and foes alike …

The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral: Development In An Anglican Approach To Christian Unity, Robert B. Slocum Oct 1996

The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral: Development In An Anglican Approach To Christian Unity, Robert B. Slocum

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral has served as the primary reference point and working document of the Anglican Communion for ecumenical Christian reunion. It identifies four essential elements for Christian unity in terms of scriptures, creeds, sacraments, and the Historic Episcopate. The Quadrilateral is based on the ecumenical thought and leadership of William Reed Huntington, an Episcopal priest who proposed the Quadrilateral in his book The Church.Idea:/In Essay toward Unity (1870) and who was the moving force behind approval of the Quadrilateral by the House of Bishops of the 1886 General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was subsequently approved with …

Robert Elsmere As A Reflection Of The Tractarian Controversy (1833-1890), Katherine Litchfield Apr 1996

Robert Elsmere As A Reflection Of The Tractarian Controversy (1833-1890), Katherine Litchfield

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Between 1833 and 1890, the controversial Tractarian or Oxford Movement created a turmoil in British society. In 1888, amid the religious and political consternation of that time, Mary Augusta Arnold Ward published Robert Elsmere, the story of an Anglican priest who came to question and ultimately reject his faith because of the truths he uncovered in his studies of history. This thesis illustrates how the novel captured the religious conflict of the individuals and families who were caught in the midst of the Tractarian period in British history.

Buddhist Meditation And The Consciousness Of Time, Philip Novak Jan 1996

Buddhist Meditation And The Consciousness Of Time, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper first reviews key Buddhist concepts of time -- anicca (impermanence), khanavada (instantaneous being) and uji (being-time) -- and then describes the way in which a particular form of Bhuddist [sic] meditation , vipassana, may be thought to actualize them in human experience. The chief aim of the paper is to present a heuristic model of how vipassana meditation, by eroding dispositional tendencies rooted in the body-unconscious alters psychological time, transforming our felt-experience of time from a bind to a liberating force.

Assessing Modern Bankruptcy Law: An Example Of Justice, Veryl Victoria Miles Jan 1996

Assessing Modern Bankruptcy Law: An Example Of Justice, Veryl Victoria Miles

Scholarly Articles

The task undertaken in this article will be to consider how well modern bankruptcy law measures up to concepts of justice that have evolved from Catholic social thought. The application of Catholic social justice in the assessment of whether a law is "just" or "unjust" can be viewed as a rational progression in evaluating the quality of justice achieved under a law.

How Realistic Can A Catholic Writer Be? Richard Sullivan And American Catholic Literature, Una M. Cadegan

History Faculty Publications

Despite the fact that Sullivan never achieved the fame he sought, the record he left behind reveals much about the way one writer handled the complicated personal and professional questions of regional, literary, gender, and religious identity. He was a regional author with national ambitions, a serious author who did not disdain the notion of popular success, and a male author whose primary focus was domestic life and relationships. He was also a Catholic author-that is, he belonged to a tradition that believed in normative standards for artistic value in an era when such a belief was considered by some …

Reassessing Canonical Attitudes Towards African Marriage Practices Based On A Study Of The African Synod, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator Jan 1996

Reassessing Canonical Attitudes Towards African Marriage Practices Based On A Study Of The African Synod, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

African theologians are virtually unanimous in pointing out that the experience and institution of marriage constitute a special test case for the process of inculturation in the Church in Africa. This article studies the problem as it was dealt with by the African Synod, that is, from the perspective of the Code of Canon Law in relation to extremely important issues such as grounds for nullity, consummation of marriage and marital consent. In the author's opinion the Synod opens the way for further discussion and examination of the issues involved rather than provide practical solutions. The pastoral problem of compatibility …
