Refiner’S Fire: The Soteriology Of Sacrifice In The Work Of William Porcher Dubose, Robert B. Slocum
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This article is a sequel to 'living the Truth: An Introduction to the Theological Method and Witness of William Porcher DuBose' which appeared in the December 1990 issue of the St. Luke’s Journal of Theology. DuBose (1836-1918) was the second dean of the School of Theology (1894-1908) and a leading Episcopal theologian. His primary theological theme was soteriology. This article elucidates that theme.

New Testament Church Government: Fidelity And Flexibility, A. Boyd Luter
New Testament Church Government: Fidelity And Flexibility, A. Boyd Luter
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
In spite of disagreement over what constitutes the biblical form of local church government, it is still normally assumed that all churches should have the same governmental structure and that the qualifications for a particular leadership position should be the same . . Such an approach pours all the major structure and qualification passages to the same mold, ignoring significant evidence for “flexibility” in regard to churches at different stages of growth. Particularly suggestive are variations between the supposed “twin” passages: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-9. Careful consideration of the similarities and differences leads to the conclusion that it …

From The Religions Of Man To The World's Religions: A Conversation With Huston Smith, Philip Novak, Bridgett Novak
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
"Huston Smith's The Religions of Man has for a generation introduced more people to the world's spiritual heritage than any other work. Over one and a half million copies have been printed since 1958. The author of many other articles and books (Forgotten Truth, Beyond the Postmodern Mind) and an advocate of the Perennial Philosophy, Professor Smith has helped to shape the spiritual currents of our times. We interviewed him shortly after he had completed the first revised edition of The Religions of Man, due out in September from HarperCollins under the new title, The World's …

Adventist Doctrines And Progressive Revelation, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Progressive revelation has played an important role in the development of the Seventh-day Adventist church and its theology. By “progressive revelation” I mean God’s continuous unfolding of prior revealed truth.1 Without such progressive revelation, the unfolding of inspired truth building on truth previously revealed and never denying it, the Seventh-day Adventist Church would not exist.
An Appraisal Of The Leap Of Faith, Gary R. Habermas
An Appraisal Of The Leap Of Faith, Gary R. Habermas
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
Where has the leap of faith concept come from? What has it fostered? Does it provide an adequate foundation for the Christian faith? This article will critique the development of the leap of faith through Lessing, Kant and Kierkegaard. It will then evaluate the theological and philosophical positions that have grown from it and its present status in light of the Scriptures.

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ As Taught By The Nephite Prophets, Noel B. Reynolds

Three definitional passages in the Book of Mormon define the gospel or doctrine of Christ precisely as the way or means by which an individual can come to Christ and be saved. Jesus Christ is quoted in all three passages teaching a six-part formula: All men and women who will (1) believe or trust in him, (2) repent of all their sins, and (3) witness to the Father that they have so repented and taken his name upon them, will (4) receive a remission of sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost, which will guide and sustain them as …
